how are you trying to justify people being abused?

because you are jealous of the money they make? or because you are jealous that they get to play the sport the sport you love for a living?

It mystifies me why you even post on here for several reasons.

A. Everyone thinks you're a cunt
B. You seem more interested in cricket than football
C. You seem to have no concept whatsoever of  what it means to be a football fan or the culture surrounding it.

Am I jealous of people earning 10's of thousands a week? for playing football?  Yes, sure I am. I earn a reasonable living but I wouldnt mind a couple of extra zeros being added.  Are you telling me you're not jealous to some extent of people younger, richer and more talented than you?

Giving players stick has happened for decades. some of it probablly does go to far but the players know the score when they get into the game.

As others have said, pay me £30k a week and I'll stand wherever you want for 90 minutes a week and take whatever 40,000 people call me or my family then walk off at the end of it with a big smile on my face and £30k in my pocket

Travel back in time with me to the FA Cup Final of 2003, at the ghastly Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, an occasion on which Arsenal beat Southampton 1-0. After the match I got the rattler to Newport, along with a number of women, children, old people and Southampton supporters. These last enlivened the journey with a number of songs, mostly about their hatred for the supporters of Portsmouth. Oh yes, plenty of naughty words. They all thought that was perfectly all right. Then they sang that old terrace favourite: the one that says Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is a paedophile.

It is, I think, important to spell this out, rather than conceal the name or fudge the nastiness of the song. The legal profession may require me to state that there is not an atom of truth, or even a shred of rumour, in the accusation. It is a straightforward piece of vileness and it comes because Wenger is different to the common run of footballing folk, and because an awful lot of footballing folk think that abuse such as this is acceptable.

On the train, there was a brief embarrassed pause after this song, as if the singers realised they had gone too far. One of their number even apologised: “Sorry, everybody, but he really did f***ing annoy me this afternoon.” And with that, he led the company into a second rendition.

The racism issue shows that football, and society, can be improved. The idea of what is acceptable has changed and we are all better off as a result.

Perhaps sex is the next frontier. I am not advocating prudery, but if football grounds can take on racist abuse, they can tackle sexual abuse as a follow-up. We live in a society that thrives on tolerance; we do not need areas of intolerance to make society work. The exact opposite is the case. Salutations, then, to Campbell and Wenger for coming out on this issue. And shame on all those who think that decency is a form of weakness.

Don’t the crowd have a responsibility for football’s image, too? Five years ago, I was watching a game in London with my son and I asked a bloke next to me to tone his language down for my son’s sake. The guy declined: “Don’t f***ing bring him to football then, you stupid p***k,” he said.

When Eric Cantona steamed into the crowd at Selhurst Park in 1995 there were a lot of players who thought: good on you, mate. We wish we were as brave as you. Crowds – and not just in football – get away with disgusting behaviour. For some fans, abusing players is a sort of verbal masturbation, their weekly session to release all their pent-up frustration.

Loads of times I’ve taken stick and it’s been funny, but too many don’t know where to draw the line. Banter is one thing, hardcore pornographic chants about your wife, or calling people paedophiles, another. The media often underplay just how mind-bogglingly disgusting the behaviour can be. It’s scandalous, it’s inhumane.
