TOWN fans were again put through an emotional roller-coaster ride yesterday as the County Ground takeover descended into further farce.

With everyone expecting a conclusion to protracted takeover talks yesterday morning, Town's suitors were finally forced into conceding defeat - admitting they would have to wait till today to sign a conditional deal'.

Jeremy Wray, a key member of the purchasing consortium, insisted he was 100 per cent confident it would be signed yesterday but a frustrating wait for legal approval from the club's lawyers has again left everyone in limbo.

advertisementWray is still adamant their takeover will go through, admitting he cannot wait to take control and start concentrating on "footballing matters".

The Swindon Advertiser again urges Town's majority shareholders to pass control of the club on - with the situation gone well beyond farcical.

With the new owners itching to become officially involved, surely the selling party should have been forcing the issue with the lawyers and making sure the cash-strapped club's immediate future is secured.

A conditional agreement was agreed by both parties yesterday morning, subject to legal approval, but at close of play yesterday Wray's lawyers were still waiting for positive reaction from the other side.

He said: "It is very frustrating. My lawyer has just been waiting for the email from the seller's legal people saying the conditional deal was okay. Both parties have already agreed it.

"We are still convinced it will get done but I know it is starting to sound stupid.

"The time frame we have been giving though have not been deadlines they have just been realistic targets for when we thought it would be done.

"We have set out a conditional deal because there are one or two conditions that still need to be thrashed out. But we just want to get in there because there are day-to-day footballing issues to be addressed."

After months of misery and uncertainty hanging over the County Ground like a dark cloud, Town fans deserve to be treated better.

Every day another drama seems to rear its ugly head to prevent the deal from being concluded and you cannot help asking the question do the owners actually want to sell?

Today should spell the end of a disastrous financial regime and the start of a brighter future - but like many Town fans, we will only believe it when the ink is dry!

The Andrew Fitton-led consortium is expected to finally complete a protracted takeover of Swindon Town this morning.

Three deadlines passed yesterday without any official word that a 'conditional' deal had been signed - but Fitton's business partner, Jeremy Wray, has been quick to assure worried supporters that the consortium is still on course to take control.

The takeover will be completed this morning with a clause entered to allow Fitton and his consortium to pull out should the club's existing development partners, St Modwen, fail to approve an agreement that has been hammered out over development rights.

Sources close to the talks, however, insist there is nothing 'sinister' in the conditional nature of the deal - with the property firm expected to approve the agreement at a board meeting to be convened shortly.

The new consortium are also seeking assurances from the club's existing directors that they are not owed any outstanding monies.

That paperwork is expected to be signed by directors and returned to the consortium's lawyers this morning.

The new consortium has pledged to rid the club of crippling debt and are set to resolve the managerial situation as soon as possible.

Youth team manager David Byrne has been in charge since Paul Sturrock left for Plymouth Argyle at the end of last month.

Byrne has not ruled out the possibility of taking the job on a permanent basis - but a number of other candidates are also in the running.

Martin Allen has already publicly declared an interest and is among a number of high-profile names who have applied for the position.

Micky Adams, Joe Kinnear, Mick Harford and former Italian international goalkeeper Walter Zenga have also sent CVs to the County Ground.
