Title: Swindon v Mcarlisle matchday thread
Post by: Bogus Dave on Tuesday, December 4, 2007, 19:18:38
All those that went up their today are stupid. I can see us getting dicked 3/4-0  aswell  :(  No roberts or ifil, unproven manager, its not looking good. Chris allen should start, so would be interesting to see how he does but overall i'm not very confident at all

Nothing but a defeat. I'll be pleased with 2-0 tbh.

That's a bit harsh-I think that anyone who has travelled should be extolled from the rafters

It'll be worth it if we win, but travelling that far for a night game is madness. fair play to 'em though

It's an 'I was there' thing and a good laugh. Fair play to them.

Town End Terry is flying to Newcastle, training it to Carlisle and back, taking in Newcastle v Arsenal tomorrow and coming home.  That's  loyalty, except the Newcastle game obviously.

That train journey (Newcastle to Carlisle) takes over 1½ hours each way - longer than the flight!!  And it's going to be freezing up there.  That's not commitment.  It's borderline insanity.

I think we'll lose, and will be very happy if we get a point.  If we do win, you can guarantee some idiot will recommend that Byrne should get the manager's job full time.  Diamandis will then agree with him and make the appointment, and Fitton will then bugger off in disgust.

Either way, I'm looking forward to Byrne saying 'twat' again live on air.

We'll win convincingly.

They won't be able to cope with Comminges pin point crosses and Blairs nifty footwork.

At the back they'll come up against a brick wall......................

say what you like about Sturrock and his choices, but do not under estimated the impact of losing him will have.

We've gone from having the best manager in League One to having the worst.

well, we could always hire a manager

takeover has no impact on the fact we need a manager.

we dont need a take over to hire a manager as we would have budgeted in Sturrocks wages.....assuming we ever do anything that in any way shape or form looks like some form of a a budget.

The takeover needs sorting so we can have a settled manager with coaches that can take us to the next level, I expect the players aren't too worried about what Byrne & Adi says as they know they probably won't be in the hotseat long, they cna play how they want to - although proffessional pride comes into it

But I guess if the takeover does not happen we needn't worry as we won't have a club to worry about

Does sound like we have been beaten by a better team - we just aren't creating anywhere near enough chances

That was what i was trying to say, we can't really get someone in until the takeover is sorted, we need to wait until then, if it gets sorted that is, if it falls through i wouldn't be surprised if they kept Byrne/Williams in charge.

rather that than..
- dont hire a manager whilst the take over goes on. We go 5 games without a win
- go into the christmas period on bad form with no new manager
- start the new year down the bottom with no manager
- players get sold off to cut costs and re-coup some money
- take over drags on as swindon slip into the bottom 4
- we get relegated as the minor paperwork is still incomplete
- we find ourselves going to accrington stanley again in league two with no new manager.

Whilst we're waiting for take overs, now Wise has gone lets wait for Bill Power to take charge before we appoint another manager.....or should we wait till BEST are in charge, I bet they know a portugese bloke....or we could wait for Fitton and see what he thinks

OR WE COULD HIRE A FUCKING MANAGER

Whilst we're waiting for take overs, now Wise has gone lets wait for Bill Power to take charge before we appoint another manager.....or should we wait till BEST are in charge, I bet they know a portugese bloke....or we could wait for Fitton and see what he thinks

OR WE COULD HIRE A FUCKING MANAGER

I think you've gone a bit too far with your assumptions there :D  If we appointed a new manager half of what you have said could still happen anyway :?

At the least we've planned up untill the end of the season....and even if we did in 3 months time.....we still need a bloody manager.

No matter what is going on off the field, we need a manager and we need one a week ago!!

We would have lost tonight with Sturrock in charge. Carlisle are a better side than we are - and that's even when we are at full strength. Get over it - the off field matters are far more important. Get that sorted and we can go forward but remember (and I have been supporting Town for 30+ years) our current fan base is only good enough to support a League 1 side. Dont blame Byrne/Williams - they will do their best with a depleted squad.

The club is more than capable of being an established championship side with the right backing, if we sorted out our off-field problems and got a decent manager then there's no reason why we couldn't get into the championship within 2-3 years.
Byrne/Williams are nowhere near good enough, the sooner they are not in charge the better to be honest.

Sorry to shoot you down after your 1st post Kirky but ...............

Byrne is a youth team manager

Williams is a player who proved he was not good enough last year to manage in league 2, yet alone league one

However

its not their fault, they have been thrust into this position by the wankers who are strangling the club I love.

the same Carlisle team we beat last season.....oh yeah....

Its not about one game though, maybe Sturrock would have lost it still....but Sturrock is a manager. Williams and Bynre arent.

One day may not make the difference, but over the season we'd be better off with Sturrock in charge than Williams....obvious really.

There's a lot of sense in what you say....we'd lost 3 away league games on the spin under Sturrock.   We have the potential,  if the takeover is sorted to have the occasional foray up into the CCC,   last for  a few seasons then back down again.....that's our place in the scheme of things and I see nothing changing it anytime soon.

Bit harsh on Williams when acknowledging we lost but played some of our best football under him last season. Always comes across as honest, committed and having respect of players - something our beloved board/current advisors could have only dream of! My point is a new manager is not the key issue right now and Williams/Byrne deserve our support - I wonder whether they are being paid at present!!!!

I thought Fitton was meant to be choosing the next manager, regardless of whether he took over the club or not?

Like the signing of Arrietta, Anzite, A.N. Other and Brevett during the Best debacle?

We're not in a relegation battle just yet. If the takeover isn't done soon and a mangerial appointment isn't made then we really are up shit creek without a paddle. There's a long way to go in this season if we can survive the financial fall out, hasty appointment or not.

the takeover and the survival of this football club is far more important than a hasty managerial appointment. if the outcome was relegation but the takeover was successful then i would take that.
Byrne was gutted. Heard countless other STFC managers sounding similarly clueless after heavy defeats - guess it would be hard to find anyone getting much out of our players in similar circumstances - i.e with all the off field crap going on. Agree re priorities totally

Well the fans who think along the lines of "the team is doing well on the pitch i'm not bothered about off field matters" could soon have a nasty shock when there's no football to watch due to the club folding thanks to our lovely board.

I thought the same SY, lot's of long silences whilst he had to think of what to say next. I also think that he sounded a bit harsh on the players, taking into account the circumstances (Depleted squad n'all).
I also got the impression that he put the blame solely on the players, as though we would have won if they did EXACTLY what he told them to do: (Not my fault gov.) Although to be honest I wasn't at the match and may stand to be corrected on that.

Thinking about it, my STFC supporting time has been as more of a follower than a fan. Oddly the fandom doesn't seem to correlate to success, but more to the availability of cheap student tickets. Having had 3 ; 19/97, 00/01 and 01/02.

There are other periods of fairly good fannage from me; On and off in 95/96 (can't really remember how often I went), a run of home and away games at the end of 99/00 (fuck knows why), whenever I was back from uni in 02/03 and the same again but less so in 03/04 (we were a bit too good in our play-off year).

Yeah - what makes me a fan or a follower? I have supported the club since the 1970' s been to lots of games but have missed a lot more when bands/drugs/women/booze have been more tempting or work/kids/lack of cash/distance from swindon have got in the way - does that make me a second class supporter? i have too complicated a life to drive 500 miles on a tuesday night to see us get spanked on a wet night in Carlisle - we all love the club, to greater or lesser extent i grant you - but a fan i am - till i die - and the comment about pompey was for my kids and their future football wellbeing. i, like all of you cannot switch aliegience(sp)

Bloody hell, IT's ONE GAME MATE.

WTF is happening with the TEF tonight?

I feel the same, angry yes, fed-up yes....I want this whole fiasco sorted as much as the next guy. I really need to find the spark to get me interested again. Foe example, the millwall away game i was more looking forward to meeting mates and getting pissed than the actual football itself. Me and STFC is like a relationship. I need to get it back on track. Get the feeling back, but when that happens I don't know. I'll protest cos I love the club (couldn't make sat due to personal reasons) and don't want to see it die.

You are just on a wind up aren't you, what is your usual name? Where was this best football under Williams last season as all I remember is 2 defeats with the Hereford match being a dismal display summed up by his choice of goalkeeper.
Williams and Byrne aren't up to the job end of story, yes their are more pressing issues but if these 2 remain in charge we will just slip down the league which ultimately costs us thousands.
I hate all this bollocks about them being passionate, respected and genuine. If everyone with those qualities was a good manager we'd all be doing it....and anyway one is a youth team coach and the other is an alcaholic what great candidates.

I agree Glos 100%.

This forum is depressing tonight.  Ok we lost 3 nil away from home with almost a 2nd string side, low morale - no manager what do some people expect?  Did they think we would thrash Carlisle who were 4th before this fixture?

If so, WAKE UP, moan about 3 nil all you like but we had the pleasure of seeing us put 4 past Bournemouth and 5 past the Gills!  I know its almost irrelevent but something to cling onto!

I'm currently getting a load of abuse from the Sellafield section of my work as their all Carlisle fans. Apparently we looked the most clueless outfit they'd seen all season and it took them 35 minutes to figure out what formation we were playing.
This whole club is a mess from the boardroom all the way onto on the field matters it now seems. We need new faces in all areas of the club and unfortunately that seems unlikely in the near future.
We will stay up if we get a semi competent manager of that I'm sure however I feel equally sure Byrne and Williams would get us relegated....this is all dependant on the survival of STFC obviously.

I agree. with 3 decent quality players in the right positions we'd look a much better side currently.  Sadly we all know why they aint here.

Theres no way I want them as permanent managers, but I cant help but feel people are being harsh on Williams and byrne given the injuries and opposition tonight. Our away form hasnt been great so far this season even under Sturrock

but we've just seen the manager behind those victories walk away.

Personally, I cant look at results objectivly like that.....ah well we lost today, but won well a few weeks back.

Results mean nothing, in that aspect till the end of the season.

The 5 past Gillingham and 4 past Bournemouth wont even be worth remembering if we slide down the table and get relegated

The 3 Carlisle put past us wont be worth remembering, if we have a decent season and finish mid-table.

However, the difference now....is.....the good results are in the past and the not so good result is the present.

Losing a manager of Sturrocks ability will effect the team, we will get worse without him.....and to be honest that worries me. All the previous results where from a different 'era' where as Carlisle is from this 'era' and the sooner this era ends and the new one beings the better because we cant afford to keep getting results like we did today

Yeah, those German roads are ace.

A bit of a more detailed match report:

First 15 minutes we looked good, very good. We had the majority of posession and worked the ball nicely down the channels. I don't agree with glos_robin's post about his Sellafield mates saying we didn't know what formation we were playing, it was very much a 4-4-2 and worked well. Some nice neat interplay between Smith and McGovern down the right.

After they scored their first against the run of play it just went completely down hill. Couldn't get a foot on the ball. No town player really had a bad game, Carlisle were just far better than us.

Tozer's sending off was never a foul. He got the wrong side of his man and put his hand out, barely making contact. Carlisle forward took one hell of a tumble, as could be expected, the ref saw it and waved play on. Then the wanker linesman flagged for a foul so the ref had to apply the letter of the law and send Tozer off. Shocking decision.

Hat's off to Ash/Spencer/Dex and the rest, you certainly made some noise in the first half until one of your lot got dragged out. Although, if you're going to take your shirts off, at least be a bit imaginative and write something on your chests.

Just got back...

We were the better team i thought until Carlisle scored then we did not look like we would ever score.

Started in the pub at 9 got the coach at 11 back in the pub at 530. Bloody annoying to go that distance and lose 3-0. Was a great day though all in all bar the result.

Also it was nice to get a letter from the club thanking the 150 or so Town fans for going as well as a ticket and a winter hat for going. Fair play

Off to bed now.... shattered.

We were the better team until they scored their second goal. Our approach work was very slick but we couldn't make real chances because the final ball was lacking or the strikers couldn't hold it up and lay it off.

Their first was against the run of play. A poor attempt to clear it by Comminges fell into their strikers path with no central defender near him (Byrnes talked of positional problems). The second was another positional cock-up with Comminges standing outside the area gesticulating instead of tracking his man who scored. The third was a header from 3 yards with Brez flapping.

Think Byrne a bit harsh on the players. We actually played quite well first half and although a bit overrun in the second we were down to ten men after another harsh sending off.

The most pleasing thing was we kept going and worked hard to prevent a heavier defeat towards the end. Was a bit worried that heads would drop after everything that has gone on but to be fair attitude was good as it was on Saturday when we had to dig deep after going behind.

Its crazy to talk about relegation in the same way that talk of promotion was overly optimistic earlier in the season. At the end of the day we have mostly beaten teams below us and mostly lost to teams above us. Put simply Carlisle have better players than us at the moment although doubtless we would be stronger if at full strength. Arguably we had 6 players who are in the first X1 unavailable last night and only 3 players started who started the season at Northampton.

Given all the turmoil a mid table finish with a run in the FA Cup which looks very achievable at the moment would be a very good season and something to build on.

Firstly though we need the takeover to go through, the embargo lifted, and a new manager (preferably Cotterill or Ling) who can provide us with some much needed stability.
