Title: Is it an age thing....
Post by: janaage on Friday, November 30, 2007, 13:46:54
...that I'm slowly finding myself give less of a shit about our players?

All this "I won't protest during matches" because the players deserve our support etc.  I not sure I really buy into that school pf thought.  Do they really deserve our support week in week out.  The club deserve our support but some of the players, just because they pull on a red shirt might not.

I've been thinking and I can't really think of any of our current crop of players who would "die for the cause", in a Shaun Taylor kind of way.

I just feel the way football's going nowadays that all they're here for is the pay packet and that's it.  The pride in the club has gone.

Take for example last week, I was sat in the Arkells watching the game, when one player comes into the stand having a laugh at the fact the rovers fans were calling all Swindon fans inbreds etc.  I didn't really get the sense that this bloke gave a shit about the club or the fans.

If we go under will any of the players really care?  Or will they thank their lucky stars that they will now be free to join some other club with better resources.

Probably put this down to the fact that I'm generally fecked off with it all at the moment, but I'm sure it never used to feel like this a few years ago.

I know what you mean.  Its not been helped by our massive turnover of players in recent years.

After nicho how long has our 2nd longest serving player been here?

The vast majority of players at this or pretty much any club dont truly give a shit about supporters any more.

How many of the current team can you say give a shit? possibly Peacock? cant say many others at all.

Not like Shaun Taylor, Calderwood, Ling etc they are overpaid primadonnas most of them and so very very few actually care about the fans, how many give up their spare time to give their support and time to charitys or hospitals? hardly any.

I support all players that play for Swindon..no matter what...when they are on the field, having met hundreds of town players in the past I little time for few of them, almost to a man they are/were jumped up arrogant gits.

In answer to Lebowski's question.

I suppose it does come from the fact that none of them truely have anything to do with the town.  No loyalty, no family connection etc.

I'd agree theres no loyalty or passion in todays game anymore- for example, look how many testimonials there are nowadays. Not many.

On the other hand I think it in modern day society. We are all money based. The world revolves around it unfortunately. How many people can honestly say that if they were paid more by another company to currently do the job they're doing they would turn it down?

there's no player i feel any affinity or loyalty towards at the club anymore. in recent years i admired parkin for his ability, miglioranzi for his almost cult-hero status and reeves for being a loyal servant of the club.

out of the current lot, we've got some very average players, none of whom seem particularly swindon - if that makes sense? even pook as a local lad doesn't strike me as someone who is proud of or loyal towards STFC.

i've got a rule of never talking to footballers, particularly our players...it makes it easier to hate them  :D

why should they care?if they make mistakes or suffer loss of form they get abuse from our so called "loyal supporters"
its a two way street as far as i'm concerned

Bollocks. They get paid to perform.

We pay to watch them perform.......................

It's not about the players being bothered as such, it's the feeling that there is no connection between the players and the clubs anymore.  Don't think fan interaction has much to do with it.

The difference is the 'celebrity' factor.

Not long ago, players at this standard were pretty much the same as the average bloke.

Now they're feted as being something special.

You could be on to something there Hertha.  Average sized fish, in a smaller than usual pond.

to be honest we go to watch stfc whoever represents the club people even cheered on joey beauchamp when he wore the shirt.it might help having more local lads but then again they probably wear man u,liverpool, chelsea or even worse barcelona or real madrid shirts ,so where is the pride or loyalty.

i think hertha's on the right lines but wages play a part too.

some of our more average players will be earning twice as much in a week as your average town fan for about a quarter of the hours.

they're in a social class of their own

In many ways I dont blame our current crop for not feeling a great affinity with the club, most have been here under 2 years

Lets be honest here, its not like present day STFC is the type of place where after 6 months you decide "Right, this is the place for me for the next 5 years.  Whats that Bob? My wages are late again? never mind"

most dont care for the club at all.

Being a footballer used to more than just a job, not its just a regular job.

Footballers in general dont do the job because they enjoy it, but because they are good at it! I know of a player we've had recently who hated football, didnt like it at all - never watched it as a kid - played it a bit and just happened to be good at it!!

Most of the players seem to think and act like they are above the fans and some what minor celebrities. The only community work they seem to do appears to be heavily forced.

however on that note, Miglioranzi was the complete opposite

also, I think Phil Smith feels something for this club, much more so than any of the others.

He'd led ourlife, he appriecates it more....

dv, if you're talking about charlie comyn platt in your first message (the player who doesn't like football) then i wish to dispute your statement that he was good at it!

Agreed 100%. Particularly when it comes to England. John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard...utterly loathesome.

Have to disagree with you there. Whilst the current crop might not die for the cause, at least they've shown they've got spirit in the last few games. Considering the off-field issues which have now been going on for MONTHS to not throw in the towel at 2-1 down yesterday was pretty impressive. Players who would die for the cause: Aljofree, Peacock, Pook and don't tell me the Beast doesn't care?!
