Title: Geatest Ever Album.
Post by: herthab on Tuesday, October 30, 2007, 18:04:47
Saw a programme on E4 at the weekend and they named Radioheads 'OK Computer' as the best album ever.

Surely that's bollocks?

Better than Revolver? Rubber Soul? Pet Sounds? London Calling? Etc, etc.............?

Who votes on these polls?

Fucking mongs..........................

Everyone has an opinion Hertha. I don't agree with it but it's a shitty poll so who cares? Think that was an old one anyway.

The sort of people who watch E4 presumably...,think its a fairly well established fact that these vote things are stitched up.  Bunch of media whores sit around having asked their mates stuff and make it up.

As I suggested with the recent greatest song thread,  something becomes great for you because it chimes a particular chord for  a particular reason at a particular time.....the media crew at E4, were probally all getting stoned and angsty at some O*bridge college, when OK computer was around.

Without doubt Space Ritual by Hawkwind is the greatest ever album.

Anyone who doesn't rate The Clash is obviously musically retarded.

And Pet Sounds was one of the most influential albums. Ever.

I always find that it's much easier to say things are shit than it is to say why you think they're good. So I've decided to avoid doing the former. Or if I do, at least give a reason.

The Bends is better than OK Computer IMO.  Whereas I got the Sex Pistols I never really liked the Clash.  Then when Mick Jones went on to do BAD, I knew why

Ok Computer is a very very good album, I would definitely say it's up with those, I love the Clash but probably prefer Ok Computer to London Calling and I think it's much better than pet sounds or rubber soul. It is definitely a classic.

'ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space' by spiritualized is, for me, the greatest album of all time. why? it's got everything, it is epic, yet fragile at the same time. it effortlessly spans jazz, blues, rock, and soul, and on top of that has a 20 minute track with loads of dirty filthy distorted feedback. music to totally immerse yourself in.

Punk changed the music scene completely in the late seventies and Never Mind The Bollocks was the definitive punk album.

Listen to 'Submission' or Anarchy in the UK' and tell me they're not good songs....

They are not good songs. I can scream over distorted guitar any day of the week. Gash. They all sound the same. There is so much more to music than heavy distortian. My band supported a Sex Pistols tribute band once and they were so loud it wasn't even considered as music. Perhaps that's why i hate the SP a bit more as well.

I was there, and would agree that NMTB, shouldn't be a contender.

Punk was anti album anyway.....after much wrangling with record companies etc,  NMTB was released after the best bit of punk had passed.

As with all the best  music scenes, they start off at grass roots, reach their peak, and the industry tries frantically to catch up, by which time they're usually appealing to those a bit behind the times.

This scenario was particularly true of punk.....which spawned a lot of spin offs, which are best found on smallish labels....which is why The Specials, who were involved in the whole two tone thing are worthy of mention.

I still stand by my own judgement on this   :)

I mean look at some of the albums mentioned on here.....IMO utter tosh, the point is that it is down to personal preference I think that it is one of the best albums partly due to it being so totally different to the total shit that was around at the time, disco, glam rock, prog rock etc....

Well thats my opinion anyway!  :D

Interestingly going to loads of gigs back then in my very early 20's, I did feel a bit ancient at times, as most every body else was about 17, 18, 19, and I had a job rather than being on the dole.

But  soon realised it was big wide open goal as far as birds were concerned as being  4 or 5 years older didn't seem to make much difference.  I recently met a bird and was remembering  taking her and her mate to see the Buzzcocks in Scumsville.   They were both fit as,  and it was good to walk the streets of that foul place, with one on each arm 8).

Ever fallen in love....definite candidate for best song of all time.

If you are a bit older this is an impossible question to answer - 70's I was into pop so Meatloaf- Bat out of Hell/Fleetwood Mac-Rumours.  80's I grew out of it so The Smiths by The Smiths or Elvis Costello -  My Aim is true,  90's - Nevermind by Nirvana - If pushed it would be the latter, but I really love The Nylon Curtain by Billy Joel and pretty much every Springsteen album ever written.  I'm surprised Chubbs hasn't been on to vote for Definately Maybe by Oasis :D

How on earth can Radiohead (in whatever shape or whining form) or The Joshua Tree (reasonable though I think it is) ever be "more progressive and inspiring" albums than Sgt. Peppers or Dark Side Of The Moon or even Nevermind?

I don't care if anybody doesn't like them they are true landmarks in the history of music.

Was music different because of Nevermind...nope,

Is the music that Nirvana made massively different to stuff before it..nope

All it did was spawn a load of scruffy fuck 20 somethings for a year or so and allowed even bigger piles of shit like Pearl Jam to chart. They spawned a scene,so did they Bay City Rollers are they also a pivotal band in music history?

Nah Reg.

Meddle was actually more ground breaking than DSOTM.

I don't like Wish You Were Here much any more. It sounds dated in a way that Dark Side and Meddle don't for some reason.

Everything after WYWH is crap though, including the awful The Wall.

Funnily enough I think that a lot of bands suffer the same way, lose their originality, spark and rawness surprisingly quickly. Like U2's Boy, War and October were brilliant yet it just fell away with The Unforgettable Fire onwards.

Perhaps the mark of a truly great band/artist is that it never fades. Hmmmm. Perhaps that's why bands break up deliberately and bail out on a high. Or commit suicide. Or get shot. Or overdose.

Why not? A lot of the best albums ever are from the last couple of decades, this is the best of them.

I dont see how Nevermind is considered pivotal in musical history at all.

There's nothing wrong with Pearl Jam.

Generally, 'music' wasn't changed by Nevermind. But alternative rock was. No, it probably wasn't massively different to stuff before it, but for some reason people loved it and it got the sub-genre into the mainstream.

There are a hell of a lot of bands that you would never hear of if Nevermind hadn't flown off the shelves and had massive airplay.

It is still one of the great albums of all time though.

I don't think that Nevermind really changed music too much, it is just 12 great songs but they really are good, as an overall album I prefer in utero but I have to say smells like teen spirit is unbelievably good and deserves all the acclaim it has had.

Meddle is decent...TBF I haven't listened to it for years, Floyd really lost their spark when Syd Barrett quit.....OK they've had a few bits and pieces since, and have a tidy back catalogue.

An artist who's stuff has spanned a long time with consistent high points is Neil Young....After The Goldrush, may have been his best album, but its probably debatable.

ATDI had a couple of decent tunes and don't belong in this thread, hardly surprising that Mr Ben Wah 'I AM UNIQUE, CONTROVERSIAL AND HOLD OPINIONS THAT ARE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TO EVERYONE ELSE' Balls is championing their cause...

nevermind is a decent album, perhaps one of the greatest indeed, but not sure what is changed - they were a pixies (and killing joke) rip-off and just made loads of teenagers mope around a lot.

pink floyd's the wall is awesome both musically and lyrically. u2 are shit and bono is a cunt.

i decided that i'm voting for nick drake's pink moon. anyone who disagrees will be banned.

other honourable mentions go to dj shadow for endtroducing, pavement for terror twilight, sonic youth for daydream nation...

nevermind sold on the back of two things... 1) smells like teen spirit, 2) the death of kurt cobain. it's not a great album, and isnt even the best nirvana album.

the likes of entroducing by dj shadow, and mezzanine by massive attack, meanwhile are truly great albums. but people generally are scared to listen to anything that isn't in 4/4 with a white singer.

like johnny rotten said, i've met the man on the street, and he's a cunt.

i'll drink to that.

let's have it right though, terror twilight is easily the worst pavement album.

Have you actually heard more than a couple at the drive-in songs. Probably not.

If I was actually trying to be unique and controversial I would hardly be championing smells like teen spirit would I. In fact I'm just giving my honest opinion, I have a few thousand albums and Relationship of Command is the best I've heard, it is not as well known as many others that make best album lists but had they not split up just as they were becoming popular it probably would be, it really is an incredible album. It has everything a good rock album should have, at times beautiful, often frenetic, always passionate and although it builds on the foundations of stuff like Fugazi, there is nothing quite like it. To claim it doesn't belong in this thread is pretty ridiculous and more than a little pretentious.

It often does make best albums lists anyway, although ranked way lower than it really should be, this is a pretty good list http://www.spin.com/features/magazine/covers/2005/06/0507_cover_greatest_albums/
with most of those being very good albums but relationship of command deserves to be a lot higher, still at least they included it.

Entroducing is definitely one of the classics of it's genre, although nothing too revolutionary as Coldcut had being doing similar stuff for a long time but I'd definitely have that in my top 10. Pavement and sonic youth, good bands but none of their albums quite stand out amongst the many bands with a similar style, there is no-one quite like at the drive-in.

Hmmm - only smells like teen spirit - don't think so...

He's the one
Who likes all the pretty songs
And he likes to sing along
And he likes to shoot his gun
But he knows not what it means

Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend, as an old enemy
Take your time, hurry up
The choice is your, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend as an old memoria

I'm so happy 'cause today
I found my friends
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay
Cause so are you
Broke our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care
And I'm not scared
Light my candles
In a daze cause I found god

Nevermind is absolutely awesome if you're about 15. After that you should probably grow out of it.

Bloc Party are worse than bad, they're horribly average. Which means they are horribly boring.

Greatest albums can't have pink involved in titles or artists. Otherwise it means that the gays have won and humanity is doomed.

For what it's worth, different albums are for different times and moods. Air's Moon Safari is an ace album but I don't want to listen to it now. Well actually I do. But I'm not going to or something. Wait I think it's the Stone Roses I don't want to listen to, that's fucking awesome too. Decksandrumsandrockandroll from the Propellerheads is pretty neat but I don't fancy listening to that either.

I'm starting to ramble aren't I?

Mex cheated and had about 10 so I'm not going to pick just one either.
There isn't one album I could pick. I'd take most of Mex's list and a few others mentioned by others, but ones that haven't come up are:

Ramones - Rocket to Russia

James Brown - Live at the Apollo

David Bowie (fuck me no ones mentioned Bowie in 9 pages of posts) - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy............

Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power

Marvin Gaye - What's going on?

The Clash - The Clash (much as I love London Calling and Sandanista they're both from that period when the band had got carried away with themselves and lost the ability to edit. They would both have made fantastic single albums if they'd ditched some of the crap)

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Searching for the Young Soul Rebels

The Jam - Snap (OK I know it's a greatest hits album but The Jam were always a bit of a singles band and I can't think of a studio album that does them justice).

Similarly my favourite r e g g a e album is a compliation so I'm including it and you can all stuff your petty rules. "Strictly for Rockers" from Island Records Reggae Greats series: Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown; Bunny Wailer - Battering Down Sentence; Culture - Two Sevens Clash, cracking!

The Doors - LA Woman
