Title: Booing Pook
Post by: Simon Pieman on Saturday, October 20, 2007, 18:27:46
What the fuck was that about?

A lot of people go on about how the protests are detrimental to the team but seemingly turn a blind eye to booing Swindon's own players before they've even kicked a ball. I know the two events aren't mutually exclusive, but it makes you bloody wonder.

by miss-controlling it though!!!

he wasnt brilliant, he wasnt bad when he came on....

I guess people were just annoyed, because I wouldnt have even dreamed of swapping Peacock for Pook....but I guess by the way Peacock limped off he was injured.

That's besides the point DV. Booing your own players is going to be worse to team morale than a pre-game protest. I bet Sturrock doesn't even pick up on it.

It's besides the point, it's the principle of it. It's got to harm the team. I clearly heard it in the town end, I'm sure Pook heard it too.

On Si's point. It's basically true and i totally agree with it. People can moan about protests and how we should support the team yet they can go and boo Pook. Hardly supportive is it?

And Sturrock won't pick up on that as you say. Because it's only us bad boy protesters that are affecting the team  :-))(

I mentioned this after the Cheltenham game .. bloody morons who booed him - I just hope mine and a few others backing of Pook from the Kingswood (flag et al) makes him realise there are people who equally think hes the king of the side to cancel out the booing morons

won us the game by starting the move that got the goal .... ill say no more

Do it....

Fingers crossed however he doesnt spend alot of time on the pitch!!

Ummmm....where is all this he did well and has grown as a player shit come from? he's exactly as he was last season.

He's not perfect and sometimes he can come on and do a job, yet sometimes he comes on and looks totally lost.....

He didnt really spend enough time on the pitch yesterday to make an impact either way.

He played one pass in the four that set up the goal. It was a simple 10 yard pass to feet. Any pro should have been able to do that.

Get a grip lads, most of you are claiming he's some sort of brilliant player purely because people booed him and you want a high horse to get on, so it seems.

He's a squad player, nothing more, nothing less

He received the ball from the wing man. He shaped to lay it back into his path down the wing. It looked the obvious ball and everybody expected it. Their defence certainly did and moved across to cover. Pook "gave the eyes" for that wing pass but very cleverly zipped it more forward and inside where there was now more space. A quick pass out to the wing for the quick cross left the defence not knowing where to run and left the space that Corr exploited.

Some simple 10 yard pass  to feet that. Give him credit.

I've always thought that Pook isn't good enough for this level of football, he doesn't seem to be very good at times. Yesterday i thought when he did come on, he played rather well and did clear the ball a couple of times which were pretty vital. He's one of them players who can either play good on the day, or absolutely crap.

Title: Booing Pook
Post by: Simon Pieman on Sunday, October 21, 2007, 11:59:04
I don't rate Pook much, but apart from yesterday (I've missed a couple of games so can't comment on those) Pook has looked better than Peacock imo.

The booing is not about how good/crap Pook is as a player, it's about the fact that people are ready to have a go at him before he's done anything wrong. Incidentally, when he's done stuff wrong he's never done anything that wrong.

All this bollocks about people concentrating on getting behind the team is a joke when stuff like this happens. I'm going to not protest and boo my own players every match if that makes me a 'better fan'.

Title: Booing Pook
Post by: Luci on Sunday, October 21, 2007, 12:34:28
Pook has done nothing to deserve booing at all.  No player should get that treatment and its disgraceful and I felt so ashamed of some people around us.  There were a lot of people in the town end doing it and not just in the Nationwide like some people have said.

I actually think Pook offers more than Peacock.   He has shown quite a lot of accuracy in his passing when hes played this season and is definitely making more challenges that he used to.  I think he plays well alongside Easton.  Peacock gives it away far too often.

Its called an opion DV and I think Pook has worked damn hard on a lot of occasions.  Apart from having an ok game yesterday, what else has Peacock done that Pook hasn't?

If you read Santinis post its quite obvious you missed Pooks contribution to the goal.

He's actually been impressive this year though. He had formed a decent little partnership with Easton until Peacock was moved back.

Personally I think booing of our own should only be done in exceptional circumstances - those players who disrespect the club, supporters etc, Aaron Brown anyone? Those who boo Pook mean they hold him in the same level of contempt as Mr Brown (by virtue of booing) and that to me seems quite mad.

As an aside I agree with Santinis summary, I for one didn't see Pook's clever pass coming.

Pook has worked hard, that not debatable.....but Steve Robinson worked hard, hell even Hewlett ran around alot!!

Peacock has been solid this season since he's dropped back into midfield. He'll win more in the air than Pook and he has better distribution, he works just as hard and gets stuck in even more.

Everyone is talking about the strikers, since they've come in our form has picked up......but this is also the same moment Peacock went back into midfield...coincidence?

I saw Pook controll the ball and pass it in the build up to the goal, and thats exactly what he did....talk it up, talk it down....he passed it, yes he contributed to the build up but again any pro (in my opinion) should be able to make the pass Pook did. It wasnt anything special or awe inspiring.....vital, yes, important, yes, brilliant.....ummm

Also, Adver gave Peacock MotM for Saturday!

I think if people look back at the match stats, and think back to the games before the strikers were recruited in August, it's fairly that Arriba's right. We weren't struggling to create chances before Paynter and Cox got here. We just couldn't get them in the net. Peacock moving into midfield has certainly had an impact, it's made room up front for someone that can shoot.

Title: Booing Pook
Post by: DV on Monday, October 22, 2007, 12:08:27
on a side note, its actually Pooks birthday today!

However, since the switch around I think we've limited the other teams to less chances as well.

Whilst I agree the addition of Paynter and Cox is the main reason for the change in fortune I still think dropping Peacock back into midfield has had a positive impact.

Him and Easton are easily the best two central midfielders we've got

peacock offers us a huge amount in terms of defending. he wins second balls, he provides aerial cover for the defence and is vitally important in defending set pieces.

for all of pook's qualities, he cannot head a ball to save his life. his tackling isn't always terribly good either.

pook offers us a lot as a squad player but he's certainly nothing more than that, a capable stand in.

Title: Booing Pook
Post by: Toni on Monday, October 22, 2007, 15:17:06
I agree with everything DV says. It wasn't just the Adver that gave Peacock MOM - the sun gave him MOM too. I certainly do not agree that Pook is better than Peacock. - Pook is not even in the same calibre as Peacock - Peacock is much better.

If Pook was that good why haven't other clubs been coming in for him? He's young. He also took an awful long time before he signed his contract at the start of this season which gave other clubs plenty of time to come in for him - but did they? NO!
