When theyve got a club with 11,000 season ticket holders on their doorstep and some of the nastiest orrible fans in the country? The non hatred of Reading is an absolute Swindon Town institution. Its been far more damaging to them than hating them. The plastics are 100 per cent happy clappers. Its fased out all their hardcore support from elm park. And Im sure the lack of a rival, the lack of geniune hatred has played a part in that (but mainly the move admittedly). Its also made them an absolute gold mine, middle class football magic. Reg knows more about this than me. But before the 60's they used to bus people in en mass from Oxford for Town games. Hence their massive ingrained chip on their shoulder. Still happens now really, massive support for STFC from oxfordshire. I think they beat us in the league cup in the 60's as well which was a huge shock. Things are quite cyclical. But after that you had a lot of violence at the 1972 home game. Then a break for the 80's. In which time our main rivals were City? Think pre war Reading were our main rivals. Followed by Rovers. |
