Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: spacey on Friday, October 5, 2007, 19:34:57 I went to that Christmas 86 game. It's one of my favourites in a fearing for my life kind of way.
Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Friday, October 5, 2007, 19:53:04 That was quite an amusing read I have to say.
Interesting to see that they liked Lester Shapter about as much as we used to! He was one God awful referee :? Those Gillingham play off games were utter quality 8) Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, October 5, 2007, 20:01:13 Jills fans really are some sad twats...half the stuff they ratlle on about never happened....back in the 70's early 80's, it was fairly common for there to be trouble off the field.
Stuff against the Jills was pretty mild.....I recall posting this pic from 80, which gives a flavour of the sort of anarchy that could reign for a big game at the CG....when you'd have to have your head clear, or get it kicked in. http://www.thetownend.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2752&highlight=spencer+white Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: Dirk Diggler on Saturday, October 6, 2007, 07:58:55 Very funny... Agree with Reg though and have to say that in my opinion this obsession(?) with Gillingham is laugable.
Been to Gillingham on a couple of occassions and all 3 playoff games and I was either looking the other way, have a poor memory (possibly) or cannot remember any trouble. However, any London club, Portsmouth, Oxford, City, Sheff Utd etc in the 70's & 80's in the town end, magic roundabout etc and you are talking about a different story. Have I forgotten anybody else? Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, October 6, 2007, 12:31:34 I went to all the play off games, and the 79 game as well as the christmas game at Priestfield and there was trouble at those games like I have never ever seen in 30 odd years of following Swindon, how the hell you could say you missed all the bottles and bricks being thrown INSIDE the ground is beyond me, the place is evil and so are the supporters with their hatred of us.

I still remember embellishing the details after a couple of snakebites at a 6th form disco at Witney Rugby Club that night.
There were plenty of Jills in our end, and it did get nasty but not for long - inside the ground at least it was nowhere near the worst trouble I've ever seen. Outside it was menacing but I didn't see or hear anything. We ended up giving a lift home to one of Swindon's supposed 'finest' from the time who'd gone down for the trouble.....except he was too scared to go back on the train. He perked up once we were back on the motorway, mind. Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... A particularly dull end of season 0-0 I think, like that's an excuse. The game v Rovers that season was even worse....it was the game where the terracing stancions were ripped from the concrete and used to batter out the cladding at the back of the Shrivenham Road....meanwhile random scraps were breaking out even in the Arkells.....hails of concrete were lobbed back and forth between the fans on either side of the fence. A bit after that, I had reason to be treated to a tour of the insides of the Fleming Way police station and ended up somewhere on the top floor....to my amazement it was a sort of trophy room, where the walls were plastered with pics of OB battering heads, amongst the mayhem that kicked off that day. Very strange. Think the Rovers game this season, if it gets played might be tasty. Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Think you must be....old skool trouble, had largely died down by the late 80's...those were the days of fences, reduced capacities and membership schemes...the TE wasn't the place to be as you could see fuck all due to fencing to the roof....the membership scheme could allow OB to eject over 200 fans v Oldham and confiscate their cards. You'd get the odd skirmish, but nothing serious. Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: chalkies_shorts on Thursday, October 11, 2007, 11:38:29 That Leicester game was much ado about nothing - they ran on the pitch and looked to get in the Shrivvy - about 20 Swindon lads stayed and it all died down.
Worst at Swindon was OUFC when we won when the smoke bomb was thrown in the goalmouth and we scored the winner. The Magic was unbelievalbe that day - cop card driving into groups of fans - dogs off the leash. Away from home, Gillingham in 80 was bad. City when we stopped them in the play offs was fairly unhealthy. Any trip to Boro. Title: Gills Fans View Of Tomorrow.... Off the pitch Post by: Windmill close wonder boy on Wednesday, October 24, 2007, 10:30:03 Reg 'this rarely happens double time' I have to disagree with you (rare) AND agree with Dell (likely as rocking horse plop) but he is right. Leicester away when we had 2 sent off it all kicked off outside when they knocked over a flimsy crash barrier between the 2 exits, some of them even got up inside our exit stairs. It was still going off in the streets around the ground 20 minutes later, saw several Town cars smashed up and a group of about 15 Leicester running from about 6 of our more serious.
