Title: girlfriend or job
Post by: oxford_fan on Monday, September 3, 2007, 16:39:05
should i take a decent job in london or take a year off so i can stay with the bird in norwich? i wouldn't be able to get as good a job there, but could do more reffing and some voluntary work and work experience to boost the cv a bit and in the meantime hopefully figure out what i want to do long term.

i'm a little bit tetchy about the london job as its for a big estate agents who have a high staff turnover with many dropping out after only four months, dont want to sacrifice my relationship and for it to turn out to be a shit job which i quit after a quarter of a year. the hours are insane too, its 6 days a week as you have to do sundays for a bit.

Stay in Norwich. Don't bother with the London job. Sounds like hardwork.

Well lets put it like this.....if you love the lady in question you'll do anything for her....same scenario happened to me many years ago....total no brainer, I hung about until she'd finished her course and we both moved to London, what's a year or so?

If you don't love her but hang about she may think you do, therefore getting the wrong idea....

i'd go to norwich though, that job sounds like too much hassle............. remember to work to live and not live to work!

Don't know why you're asking.

It's clear from the way you phrased the question that you'd rather stay in Norwich.

Flip a coin. I bet if you say heads for London, tails for Norwich and it comes up heads, you'll decide to do best out of three..........

Then five, then seven, until you get the result you want.

I'd stay in Norwich - then again I live with my missus - have done for 2 years now. It's been a laugh. To me, it sounds like you'd rather stay in Norwich anyway - the rat race can wait.

To quote Norwich's greatest patron.

Tell your bird you're not sure what you want to do so you've asked a bunch of Swindon fans on an internet forum, and when the results are in you'll get back to her. I'm sure she'll be so delighted with this turn of events that she'll be like putty in your hands.

I was about to post that everyone had failed to comment on the key fucking element of this "dilemma", but the ever reliable Pauld has beat me to it.

A FUCKING ESTATE AGENT! For fucksake NO!

You're way better off staying with the webbed feet people and your bird. London is a shit hole to live in unless you're absolutely fucking loaded, and you won't be. Look for other work mate and stay where you are.

Woah woah woah for a minute here. You used the term decent job, so therefore I assume it's a good option for you personally? I gave up alot for a girl once, even moved to a different country. I had a good time, but it didn't make me any better off in the long run. It really depends on how good the oppourtunity is. Me personally I'd take that into consideration over anything.

No, no, no...

A company car will cane your wages with tax, might as well earn 18k for what you'll take home, plus how often would you get to use the car in London? And when they say "free", if you get to use it for personal use and they pay the fuel then that's even more tax you pay.

Take it from personal experience, I left a 30K+ a year job with a car for a job with the same salary and no car and was £300 a month better off.

Working 6 days a week in London for 22k?! That is not decent by a long shot, especially as it's not the career path you seem to want to take.

Personally, I'd stay in Norwich and take the next year to take drugs, get pissed and figure out what you really want to do.

you don't have to pay anything but parking and petrol for the car, insurance, tax, servicing, etc. are all covered by the firm. the car would be used all the time as part of the job. personal use is fine.

I'm not an expert on this, but the killer is free private fuel, which could be more than the assessed benefit of the car itself.

If you weren't given free private fuel (a fixed charge, no matter how much you use) I reckon the taxable benefit would be about £2800 (without knowing cost of car exactly). At that salary level 22% tax would give a charge of  £616 or about £52 per month out of your take home pay. - I'd say that's a good deal as maintenance and insurance would probably cost that much for you. The free fuel would more than double that liability and would only be worth it if you were going back to see you girlfriend very regularly !

Like I say, don't take this as gospel,do your own research on the HMRC website, but it's worth considering.
