Suspected heart attack

Yep, heart attack at half-time.  Had to be treated with a defibrillator.

According to Martin Allen, he's been sat up in bed and talking so here's hoping he makes a full and speedy recovery.

Christ, another heart attack victim.

It's happening way to much recently. IMO something needs to be done about this.

You have very varied opinions larwood, one minute you call lads pathetic then you justify them throwing chairs around cos while they were winning an oposition player had a heart attack.

I think it has a lot to do with the training players have. It's all well and good that players spend hours in the gym running on the treadmill and lifting weights etc, but if you're not training up your heart properly by just trying to bust a gut all the time then it's going to end in situations like this.

Players today give a hell of a lot more physical effort than players 20 years ago, yes the training and fitness has probably advanced as well but there's only so much a human body can give before it breaks.

There are also a number of heart conditions that lie dormant and undetected until they take a life. Didn't Terry Yorath's son die from something like this.

Samdy unfortunately Batch is spot on! Many heart conditions are very difficult to detect and therefore are left untreated. It is unfortunate that we have had a couple of cases in a short period of time but overall if you think of the amount of players in the world and the amount of football played, it is something that occurs rarely! Even the fittest of people can have heart conditions and not be able to do anything about it!
Best wishes to the lad!

its nearly always down to an underlying heart problem.

So how come it only seems to be footballers then? How many other professional athletes in different sports have collapsed from heart attacks whilst playing/competing?

fuck knows sam?
but a lad i played footy with a while back died at the gym from a massive heart attack.it happens to different people at different times
look at how many pro players are playing everyweek and are fine.its very rare to die from footy and the fact that two similar cases have occured within the space of days is bound to raise questions.

Exactly. Trying telling these people's families "It just happens".

I might be putting two and two together and getting five, but it just doesn't seem right to me.

It's not Sam, just your average Joe won't attract the same publicity.

the fact there are 2 cases within a few days will of course raise a few questions but it does unfortunately happen and not alot can be done about it! Death to athletes in other sports do happen but are maybe less publicised? The important point is that we should be prepared with the correct emergency treatment if it does unfortunately happen, which in the case of clive clarke saved his life!

My grandad died of a heart attack a few years ago. Was out driving in the afternoon doing the shopping and just dropped befoe going to bed. Was watching the football in the evening and was going to bed. Found him on the floor with his glasses in his hands. Would never have had a clue..

interesting debate about this issue on talksport last night.
apparantly the underlying heart problems that cause sudden death syndrome kills 8 people a week.
experts dont think the football or sport itself is to blame and the victims can drop dead at any time.but only for the cost of £35 per person, a scan detecting heart defects could be done.this way it could be found before its to late. it is already compulsary in italy for all sportsmen-women.

If it's only £35 it should be done really. It's not like the players can't afford it eh?
