Title: what I learned last night
Post by: adje on Wednesday, August 15, 2007, 09:43:03
Comminges was a bitter disappointment.Expected big things but saw nothing apart from shocking distribution
Peacock is a rubbish striker-awful first touch and couldn't finish a sandwich
Sturrock-huffs and puffs to no real end product
Easton is by far the best of our 3 central midfielders
Jack Smith is our most consistent player apart from Zaboub who is consistently shite.
Roberts, when in the mood,is our most dangerous player.
Andy Reid is the fattest footballer I've seen since Mickey Quinn but, although fat of stature, looked the classiest player on veiw.
Sturrock obviously doesn't rate Arrieta very highly or would have given him more than 10 minutes.

What I learnt last night is that Petr Breazovan is a class above and it must be sould destroying to be Phill Smith last night.
Smith is by far our most consistent player.
Ifil has come of age big time.
Ajofree is a panic striken muppet whenever the ball comes near him ie hoofs it away even when i space. Him and Ifil shouldnt work together as theyre identical.
Tozer...... why did he play?!?
Roberts made a series of ex-premiership players look silly with direct passionate attacking and beuatiful attacking passes.
Easton i can see why theres hype about him, but was playing in a non exiastent central midfeild last night.
Comminges was a massive dissapointment, no first touch and always goiNG backwards.
Zaboub just doenst look intrested.
Sturrock Jnr is shite, outright shite did nothing all game and even did that badly!
Peacock bless him seems to like going into sliding tackle rediculously early and hooking the ball away.
Arrieta could do some damage, he likes to move around and get ahold of the ball, has to start saturday
Sturrock Snr abandons all hope of a comeback is we go 1-0 6o mins in or later (any answers as to why roberts was taken off for pook!?!)
Last night we looked like a u16's team, no closing down and inviting player of superior quality to run at us, could easily have lost 4 or 5-0 but just as easily got some goals in and maybe nicked it 2-1 if playes we more inclined to throw themselves in, we looked so not sharp it was unreal, why did sturrock jnr stay on so long, it was obvious 20 mins in that peacock and sturrock = 0 goals! . Btw i dontbelive Jerel Ifils hulk hoganesque big boot constiuted a penalty.

Agreed. Especially about Zaboub, he was useless Saturday and last night.

Ifil just gets better and better. What do I know tho, I'm a woman. (who went to the game)

What?!

Brezovan in no way looked a much better player than Smith. Smith shouldn't be fearing his place at all right now!

I learnt how tall Brez is - on the small section of Brunel commentry I managed to catch they were having a ten minute conversation about it!!

I learnt that we have two good keepers :?

Jack smith is solid

At first i thought Tozer was ok but after thinking realised all charltons chances came after he was skinned

ifil pure class and alojofree is adi williams with a funnier name

Roberts perform like that every game you will become a class act

Zaboub- still does my fucking head in

peacock - midfielder

sturrock- His dad should fucking ground him for that performance

I agree.  Don't think Brez did enough to get his shirt back as Smithy did pull of some great saves Saturday which I think has definitely earnt him his place saturday.

Bloody hell, whoever said that about Aljofree needs their eyes testing, he's a class act and will do well for us this season.

I lost count the amount of headers he won, and as they say if in doubt put it out, as Williams did for most of the time he was playing last year.

andy reid is my new hero

Tozer was the worst player on the pitch by a mile.

Commingues wasnt that bad, he had a lot of the ball. Roberts, good. Aljofree is still a very good player. Arrierta is just a fancy name, hes shown nothing. Didnt get what people were on about at Supermarine, I thought he was crap. Sturrock needs to get on with it, always waiting for an extra bounce.

Brezovan dropped a cross, Phil Smith will start on saturday.

How can you say ajofree is calm, we was heading balls out to touch every time when he had time and space to bring it down and play it out.  Say of me what yiou will but with Ifil and Ajofree in defence we will never build from the back, it will be like having a pair of matt heywoods on the pitch soapy tit wank. It was just stressful to see him smack the ball out evry single time, a team needs one Cb who can do that, the other needs to have his foot on the ball and play it out,.

I must have been watching a different match, or at least a different player.

Funny how two people can have such differing views of the same performance.

I think you're on your own with that opinion, personally I think our central defensive pairing could do a job in the Championship.

Aljofree took an extra touch or two when needed. Unfortunately when you've got Bent and McCunt with their pace you don't get much time....

Everyone see's it differently - I think a defence with either of the keepers, Jack Smith and Vincent (or Nico) at FB, with any 2 from Williams, Ifil and Aljofree at CB with Adams sat in front as a barrier is a solid foundation for this division.

What we now need is some thought and imagination ahead of that - Holmes is a step in the right direction, but some pace up front wouldn't go amiss, and perhaps persuading a striker to play with his front to goal.

What did that post gain you, forums are where debates are had, i made a comment and explained my reasons. In response were just attacks at me personaly and not any counter argument. I simply said that I felt Ajofree was pannicing with the ball, either that or not thinking forward enough. I feel there were several occasions where he could have brought the ball down and played it out as apposed to conceeding possession either via a throw or a rash clearance. In response to my thoughts i have been called clueless an idiot and blind. Bloody hell!!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Hard to believe you were watching the same match as everybody else. Aljofree brings a calmness to the back, in what will be a very hard defence to break down in League 1 - and you call him a panic stricken muppet!

I'm sure even Brezovan realises that he is still rusty and that Phil Smith has the starting nod for Saturday. I didn't think he was very confident on some of the crosses - understandable of course.

Everyone can see what we need is a striker and a supply. Lets hope we get it in quick to build on what we have in the rest of the team. I'd like to see Arrieta given a starting chance on Saturday, I think he's got something.

Hmmmm, i do sometimes wonder if i went to the same match as others.

My thoughts on a few players from last night...

Brez - I still think he is the better keeper, but last night he did not do enough. Smith has earnt the number 1 shirt. But its good to have 2 top notch keepers.

Ajofree & Ifil - I think we have 2 quality centre backs now. I personally think Ajofree will be player of the season.

Tozer - Is only 17 and was up against a very good opposition and was was playing out of position. So i wont judge him too much, but he showed signs of a good future prospect i thought.

Roberts - Why when we were a goal down did he come off for Pook? When he performs he is our most dangerous player, all i want now is some consistency.

Sturrock - Really should not be starting. We need a goalscorer!

Pook - When he came on was the worst player on the pitch.

1. I learned that we held our own against an ex premiership team for best part of an hour and was probably our best performance since Walsall away last season. This has injected a massive positivity in my mind for this season, if the striker issue is resolved of course :-))(

2. Blair Sturrock is utter crap and always offside.

3. Roberts was clearly still on the booze or in some sort of post alcoholism depression or something for last season. He was a refreshed player last night and by far the best we had to show on the night. This makes me happy.

4. A game without the Townend is just plain wrong. Take note for future seasons you idiot fuckwits who had ALL summer to get that safety shit done and out of the way.

He was taken off because once we were a goal down we had no desire to win the game.

So instead of trying to get a goal back, we took off Roberts (as he is our most dangerous player) so he is slightly fresher (and not injured) for Saturday.

Which once we were 1-0 down was the more important game.

The main things I learned
1. Charlton are pretty good - they had options open for the man on the ball for most of the game.  When we were in possession they closed us down very quickly and we had to boot it long or pass to someone who was marked up.  So credit to them
2. We badly need a striker as Sturrock and the Cock can't play off each other.
3. Roberts is our biggest threat - I think he was subbed to save his legs for the Luton game
4. That despite all the boardroom shite the thing I most love doing is watching the team play. We were outclassed but not out-fought and I think we'll hold our own in League 1.
5. Sturrock Snr - give Arrieta more time, he had little chance to get used to the pace of the game

Well, it's a forum as you say, where people can freely post their opinions. That happens to be their opinion of your opinion. Or are they not allowed to have an opinion of your opinion? If you see what I mean.

FWIW, I thought Aljofree was outstanding at Northampton and him and Ifil were rock solid. I didn't go on Tuesday so I cannot judge. You may be right. Maybe he did suddenly start playing like a mong for no reason whatsoever :?

If Ifill and Ajofree are identical then surely we have 2 very solid centre backs?

And also your contradicting yourself big time if you say Ifill has come of age and then in the following sentance say that he is similar to Ajofree and hoofs the ball everytime and panics????!!!!

Tozer was brilliant tuesday night, he's still young and to play like that was outstanding in my eyes. Sturrock was our worst player tuesday night by far. Also Arrieta hasn't really had a full 90 minutes in a league or cup match so it's a bit harsh to say he's just a name, Sturrock needs to give him a chance.
