Title: How many of our players from the last 5 years are legends?!
Post by: Bushey Boy on Tuesday, August 7, 2007, 07:52:18
Had this discussion with mates after the game, id say parkin as he got 20+ 3 seasons running hell of a player for us.

Id then say reeves for duty and the way he conducted himself.

Thats it, sad days....!

Parkin was quality in his time here obviousley but I dont think he's a true legend.

Compare him to Fjortoft and he looks a bit shit really. So the answer is none

Agreed. No one from the last 5 years could be seen as a legend in my eyes.

I sat there and said to my mate last night - Parkin couldn't hold a candle to Big Dunc or The Aeroplane - to me they were proper legends....

Sam was good - but not quite legend stakes - needed to play a bit of a higher level for that really....

parkin is our best player of the last 10 years.forget how good others were before him.loads of kids and younger fans wouldn't have seen them play.so i'd say super sammy desrves legendary status.

None of the players from the past 5 years is the way I;d go as well.  Parkin was a consistent goalscorer but not near good enough to be a legend in the clubs history.  Many will have decent records over a few years but not earned that right.  You could say Fjortoft was only here for just shy of 2 years but he showed such class above what we'd seen and did it at the highest level.  He'd probably be the last true legend the club will have seen.  Taylor and White stayed longer but would be legends before him.  White's an odd one because he's not a legend on ability, ore through hard work and graft that made him a goalscorer.

I always argue that legend is a status reserved for very few.......I prefer the term hero.   SSP certainly fits that category, if in this day and age hero = legend, then yes he  he is the last.

Good point Reg, in my time Id say White, Shearer, Digby, Calderwood, Taylor, Fjortoft, Parkin.

Parkin from the last 5 years and that's it. I say that because not only did he score goals it was general attitude on the pitch and towards the club and the fans as well.

If Parkin rejoined STFC in the near future and continued his scoring feats for Town then I would say yes, he can be labelled a legend.

At present though in my eyes, he is not a legend.

Eric Sabinio is a legend in my eyes.

Having been away from blighty for more than seven years now, the names: Shearer, Chalky, Hazard, Digby, Taylor, Summerbee, Kerslake, Calderwood, Fjortoft will be etched in my mind for the rest of my life (Along with McMahon, for all the wrong reasons however).

I have never seen Parkin play, but for me, the very fact that his status as a "legend" is challenged at all tells me that he isn't.

Could you imagine the post "Was Digby a real town Legend?"

What actually defines a legend?

Is it appearances, performance levels, goals scored, being good in a shit team, being outstanding in a good team?

For me it's will people still be talking about them and respecting their contribution a long time after they stopped playing for us.

On that basis its too early to decide if Parkin will be a legend, on the balance of probability I'd say not.

We didn't actually achieve anything during Parkins stint here,  I'm not saying he wasn't a glimmer of hope in a time of mostly shite football, just not a legend. Unless,  as Janaage says he comes back and does it some more.

And if Parkin doesn't make it the rest of them stand no bloody chance.

Was Jan Aage not a good player in a (Relatively) shit team?

He was, albeit at a significantly higher level.

That said, I don't consider that being good in a shit team is enough on its own.

If you read three lines down you'll see what I consider defines a legend, and that is most definitely true of Fjortoft.

To be fair to Parkin, an awful lot more people will have seen Fjortoft play and will therefore be able to wax lyrical about him, but thats what comes of doing it in the Premiership not the Third Division.

I'd go for Trollope, Rogers and Calderwood as legends,  possibly Fleming and Morris from way back.

Calderwood mainly for captaining us from div 4 to the top level and overall committment, Trollope for service, Rogers for putting the team on the map

I think length of service has a lot to do with legendary status. - something you just don't get these days.

And from that post I deduce that Bushey and I have been watching Town for the same period of time.

Personally, I agree that SSP should have legend status, especially as he was the best finisher inside the six yard box I think I've ever seen in a Town shirt.  No use without service, mind...

Cheers

I took a mate with me to the first game that season. He played a lot of football, but was never interested in watching it.

By the end of the game he was hooked! When Hoddle scored his goal, he was halfway up a stanchion in the shrivvy road giving the away fans the finger and shouting his head off :D
