Title: First test
Post by: larwood on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, 11:30:28
At Lords tomorrow,i can't get too excited about it as i won't be in the country  :D But looks as if Broad will be taking Harmys place.

Be interesting to see how the Indians do as they still don't have a coach, according to the cricket writers progamme on SS1 on Sunday the elder players are doing the duties  :o

Draw if we bat well.

Hoggy's suffering from back spasms and is rated "extremely doubtful" for the first test.

Runs galore for India then :(

india 4-1 to win. that's a very good bet considering it looks like we'll struggle to bowl them out twice.

no sky from tomorrow afternoon, boo :( will have to rely on tms whilst unloading vans and shit.

i'm not concerned about the batting whatsoever but without harmison and hoggard it's fair to say we could struggle if we have to rely on panesar and sidebottom. anderson can be too wild and broad is inexperienced.

we don't win too often at lords of late.

although i must say that's just my gut feeling about the place. there are probably loads of facts and figures to prove me totally wrong.

we haven't won a test at lords since 2005 when we beat bangladesh by an innings and 261 runs. however, since that match our only loss in four matches came to australia in the 2005 ashes series and the last three matches have ended as draws.

since the turn of the century, starting with a comprehensive innings and 209 run victory over zimbabwe in 2000, we have won 8 out of a possible 15 tests, drawing 4 and losing 3.

Nice copy and paste work!

It'll rain, we'll draw and Vaughan will get a 1st innings duck

Hoggy out for definate - a draw looks a sensible bet - two more mediocre/inexperienced bowling attacks, some decent batting and poor weather forecast.

So an attack of Sidebottom, Anderson, Broad/Tremlett and Pansear. The bowling attack of the ashes 2005 has gone.

at least vaughan won the toss, as Paul Collingwood said: 'I'm a useless tosser'.

tremlett's in ahead of broad, not sure i would have called that one.

I'd have thought If it was just Harmy our Broad would get the nod, but with Harmy and Hoggy they've put in Anderson and Tremlett for a little more experience.

That's a joke. Should have been Tremlett and Broad. I'm really not happy with some of the selections under this new regime

without wanting to be a prophet of future doom the BBC text commentary seems to allude that its all going swimmingly with our innings. 400+ looking possible - cue a middle order collapse before tea!

Scorching sunshine now at Lord's as Matt Prior bristles out to the crease. It's less than two hours since the apocalypse seemed to have arrived, heralded by clouds as black as coal and rain-drops the size of mangoes.

Weather is nice there then

Nah, we'll just not offer him a contract and let him join the Aussies, so he can plot our demise for the next Ashes series

Yes he seems to be getting our bowlers to bowl some decent spells recently. Could be a great replacement for the Aussie dude  8)  that's if we actually offer him a proper contract

If the roles were reversed, im pretty sure England would of been reluctant to go out and bat again aswell. You cant really complain

I don't blame the Indians at all. Of course they are going to go off. It's the umpires i'm annoyed with. We should play through all light especially when there is a result to be had

The Umpires can only do what the rules say though. The playing through all light idea is abit silly aswell

No it isn't at all. Why should light affect play? Floodlights exist nowadays so you can always turn them on. I seem to remember us batting out at dusk in Pakistan a few years ago with Hussain and Thorpe so we could win the game. Why couldn't they stay out their today and try and force a result?

Because i doubt many batsmen would like to facing 95 mph bouncers in near total darkness. It wouldnt exactly be very safe.

I agree it wasn't that bloody dark when they went off and we had spin at both ends.

Bastard!

How would you have felt if the Indians had wanted 5 to win with 5 wickets left ?  If there are rules, they shouldn't vary according to the state of the game.

PS (No floodlights at Lords)
PPS  I think they've removed the 'danger' aspect of it now
I agree the Pakistan example was stretching it past the limit

Agreed Nev - Ultimately the batsman get the choice when the decision is offered - I'd imagine the lighting conditions were the same as previous days when they had gone off for bad light.  It's extremely frustrating, but at least England can take the moral victory, not that it counts for a lot.

they done it NZ a couple of years ago just after Nathan Astle made his 222. Also anyone remember the world cup final. they cannot play in all light there is a rule that if artifical light i.e. floodlights come in to contact with natural light when the weather is bad they can agree to come off for bad light. that is agreed at the beginning of every series played.

Well floodlights are used in ODI's and i think they should be used in tests. It would be a lot more exciting as we'll see more results. We should play in all light. Even Dickie Bird agrees with me
