Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: oxford_fan on Tuesday, July 10, 2007, 23:14:22 good choices, both very nice
are you looking at the latest models? if so i'd go for the s3 as the new golf looks shit. prefer the previous incarnations of both though, especially the R32 Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 08:21:18 I like the new Golf to be honest and the DSG gearbox is superb, nothing shifts up and down faster.
The S3 is faster but doesn't have the lovely engine noise of the V6 Golf. The S3 has an uprated 2 litre Golf GTi engine. Evo magazine done performance tests on both recently. R32 did 0-60 in 5.8 secs and 0-100 in 15.2 secs S3 did 0-60 in 5.6 secs and 0-100 in 13.6 secs. Those S3 figures aren't far off supercar pace. The Audi just nudges the Golf on prestige though. But the Golf sounds sublime with a growling V6 and lovelly paddle shift DSG gearbox. The S3 is manual only. I love manuals but DSG is amazing. It's not like the old paddle boxes, shifts so smoothly and quick.
Also, it sprints to 60 mph quicker with DSG. Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: walrus on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 13:47:16 Is the DSG the same as on the Audi TT 3.2?
I'd have the Golf out of the two personally - the Audi is awesome inside and to drive, but I always think they look chubby.... I used to love driving Audi's and the build quality is second to none. It's an awesome problem to have! Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: magicroundabout on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 14:55:02 is the DSG the gearbox which has affectivly selected your next gear for you before you shift up or down? making the transition a lot smoother and faster?
Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 15:09:36 DSG stands for Direct Shift Gearbox and yes Walrus it is the same as the Audi S Tronic box.
It has 2 rather than 1 clutch plates by simply flicking a paddle the cogs swap instantly and smoothly. Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 15:10:29 http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new_cars/technology_glossary/DSG

Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: McLovin on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 15:48:49 £14k max at a push, insurance group no higher than 14...

Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: McLovin on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 15:52:52 Used. Dont think i can afford new!
Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 15:58:48 Right 2 options then really.
For £14k you could get a nice 04 or maybe 54 plate 2.0 Turbo A3 with the S line pack. This gives you all the looks of the S3 but cheaper insurance (group 15) so one above the highest you stated. Another option is a 2.0 TDi S Line. Again all the looks of the S3 but lower insurance and a very economical diesel engine that also packs a big punch. (170 bhp) Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 16:00:21 The 2.0 litre Turbo is the same identical engine as in the Golf GTi with 197 bhp.
BUT it's 2 insurance groups lower than the GTi. Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: pumbaa on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 16:01:19 Uncle Ralphy, what do you think of the Mazda 6?
Not your cup of tea I'd suspect, but seeing as you are a guru on all things with engines and wheels, I thought I'd ask your opinion... Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 16:05:25 I actually like the Mazda 6. It's alot more stylish than most 4 door saloons and the MPS version is down right insane! Very stylish car with good japanese engineering and not too expensive compared to German rivals.

Import one from Europe. My S-Line V6 cost about 11k Sterling. Fair enough the Insurance group is higher than 14 but you can't beat the sound of the engine coming out of the twin pipes! Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: Ralphy on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 16:20:21 I've driven the Mazda 6 MPS and the Mazda 3 MPS.
The 3 was very, very quick but the interior was awful and looked cheap. The 6 was just about as quick but much better quality inside. A run of the mill 6 will be a good everyday car. Thats why the R32 is more appealing than an S3. It's cheaper and sounds better even if the S3 is a touch quicker. Title: Ralphy (car question, if not interested then take the piss) Post by: glos_robin on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, 19:48:33 I did the unthinkable last week, was going to buy a new Civic type R but then work said they'd contribute to my fuel if I bought a Diesel :o
So I've ordered a new black Civic Type S GT 2.2 turbo diesel with 18 inch Blade alloys... Not quite the type R but get it tuned by superchips and it'll do a job for a few years and doing 20,000 miles a year for work it'll save me £2,000 just in fuel, then there's cheaper insurance as am still only 22 so was a no brainer really. Disappointed I won't have the Type R but should still be a nice motor. Hasn't got the grin inducing howl of the Type R engine or as much power (138 bhp vs 198 bhp) but the torque that diesel chucks out is immense. Good overtaking car. Yeah I've test drove it and it'll certainly do a job. The superchip puts on an extra 27bhp according to their quotes but people have said it actually puts it anywhere upto the mid 170/180's so I'll be interested to see what its like when this gets done. Superchips are good and offer a good warranty so I'm not to worried about letting them due it. Is that the first or second service it's had? The second is normally a major one. Don't VW/Audi cars have variable service intervals like BMW's depending on fuel used and how hard the car is driven?
