ALL of whom seem to be either subconciously or deliberately ignoring the central premise of the joke. It works through the simple technique of confounding expectations, the audience expects the barmans remark to have been aimed at the man, but the response makes it clear that the question was directed towards the bird. What the joke says is that in the mind of the barman, and for that matter of jokes narrator, the parrot is a closer to being their equal than a black man. A parrot is higher up the evolutionary scale as far as they're concerned.

I don't care if he did know how to time a joke. I don't care how much work he did for charity. I don't care how much he loved his Mum, or how many black or Jewish neighbours he was friendly with. I started secondary school in the late 70's when NF supporting skins were rife in Swindon schools. All visible ethnic minorities were given a shit time by significant sections of young people, and the presence of people like Manning on TV was at least partly responsible.

Watch any documentary about the mass migration of blacks and asians to this country in the late 50's and early 60's. Listen to what the white people being interviewed (Man on the street type interviews) said about it and the terminology they used.

They wouldn't class themselves as racist, but definitions change over time and in todays more enlightened era, they most definitely were!

As to linking Manning to the rise of the NF, that's just silly. The bloke told jokes FFS! When I was a kid rasist jokes were told all the time, by everyone, the difference with Manning was that he never moved on and everyone else did.

Stand up comedy works in two ways. The comedy of recognition that the whole aternative comedy movement has mined to exhaustion. The comic says something that acknowledges a truth that the audience recognises as true, but if they're good says it an a way that's novel or slightly at an angle from the obvious.

And the more traditional gag. Mannings game. That works by setting up the joke and then unleashing an unexpected punchline. It relies on there being a twist from the normal, a strange juxtaposition, or reversal of expectation.

That's what creates the laugh.

Can you analyse the joke differently to me and explain how it works other than in the way I described?

I don't think I'm disagreeing with you about what the 60's and 70's were like either. It was a time when overt racism was more acceptable. All I'm saying is that didn't make it universal and it didn't make it alright. There were plenty of people who found racism objectionable in the 60's and 70', and there's plenty of history of social movements to prove it.

But I can vividly remember standing in the playground at Eldene Primary School, next to my best friend and next door neighbour Chris, a mixed race lad who's Dad was a white RAF officer based at Lyneham, and who's Mum was from Guyana, whilst about forty other white kids sat on the walls that ran around the grounds and hurled monkey chants and racial insults at him, and the teachers stood and watched.

I know I'm dominating this thread in a rather sad way, but I can't let any discussion of Les Dawson go by without taking the chance to say what a sadly underestimated comic genius the man was.

As for the sexist thing. I'd argue the toss on that. Certainly his earlier work did deal with a lot of the same subject matter as a whole generation of northern club comics. But he tended to be the the butt of most of his own jokes.

The mother in law joke did loom large. But it's worth bearing in mind that good comedy stems from the truth of the comics lived experience. And back in the day when young couples didn't just move into their own new Barrett home inlaws played a much more fundamental role in their lives.

Maybe with the way house prices are going we might see the mother in law return to the acts of cutting edge young comics?

I think you've got a quaint idea of what Mannings act is like for visible ethnic minorities. By and large his audience is white, but there used to be the odd entirely inappropriate booking at conferences and corporates with a mixed audience, many of which ended up with an uproar in the papers. Look back through newspaper archives and you'll find story after story.

Why? Because if there was a black, asian, arabic, japanese, chinese person in the audience Manning would dedicate a whole portion of his act to abusing them in the hope that he could drive them to walk out, and then slag them off for not being able to take a joke.

I've already in this thread quoted the interview in which, when asked the direct question, he answered yes, and then went on to justify his answer explaining that he just didn't like some people, and didn't think they could consider themselves as English just because they were born here.

The answer was  given straight, it wasn't part of a routine, but simply stated his position.

If at other times when he felt under pressure from interviewers he recanted this then I've got even less respect for the man.

What sort of act would that be? Are you saying he adopted a racist personae to subtlely satirise racism ala Alf Garnett? The thing that annoys me most about discussions like this is the fact that people seem to think taking the piss out of somebody is wrong in any way. I'm not condoning racism, ageism, sexism etc etc etc, but the majority of jokes do tend to involve laughing at somebody or a group of people.

I read an article about it the other day in some non-tabloid paper macca. They (black people that is) do use the 'n' word to each other but it is usually a bit of a put down (well, quite a big put down actually). First I haven't any problem with people telling jokes about anything, anything at all. I've said that from the off. I don't think there should be any boundarys on what is a suitable subjet for comedy. For example I've always really liked Jerry Sadowitz who has had some criticism for the material he does on the subject of race.

i didn't like him, he had a knack for telling jokes but they were all just shite because of the material, i think he wasted his talent because of the subject material. and i thought he was irritating.

it is possible to make good jokes on race through observational comedy - not through creating victims. e.g. jokes on culture clashes and the like rather than picking on one race, whoever it may be.
