Ah Jack Smith, the goal scorer.  Must have been about the very early 60's, remember he always played with a smile on his face.  Do remember him going up for a header at the Town End and punching the ball in the net, caused a bit of a riot amongst the opposition and ended up with a couple of their players sent off.  Jack just walked away with a smirk on his face!

I've seen 66% of those play and score.

Reg, I think I can count up to 36 on that list, we must be about the same age my friend!

 Nah you've got 72%, so are clearly more ancient than me.

I only know because by total coincidence my Dad mentioned him earlier.

I would have thought Steve Finney would be on that list, unless you needed to play a minimum amount of games.

He scored 20-odd in one season!

 Think there has to be a sensible cut off....otherwise I'm sure Roy Compton, Barry Corr,  Michael Carrick, Tommy Mooney would figure

Chris Guthrie's Town debut sticks in my mind for some reason.  

Arthur Horsfield should have been at 84% given the sitters he missed.    

I really enjoyed watching Moss and Eastoe, their pace in the old Div III wasn't fair on the opposition.  Those were the days, Ellie Reece Knight placing the ball on the center spot, nothing fake about those knockers.

I only knew about the other Jack Smith the other week. I watched a documentary from the early 60's. A week in the life of Swindon Town. A great watch.

Crozzer - Guthrie's debut probably sticks in your mind as I think he ended up taking an early bath after chinning one of the opposition.
I saw 27 of them playand I can't believe Syrett is in there.

Syrett deserves being there for scoring twice at Crystal Palace, and getting the home fans swearing at Malcolm Allison, after Place were 3:1 up.

Just for those that weren't there, evening game, League Cup against Swansea, Guthrie is making his debut, with family members in the then North stand.  Town kick off, Guthrie is immediately flattened by the Swansea center-half, gets up and does a Henry Cooper and the center half is out cold before he hits the ground.  Guthrie runs toward the tunnel, waves to the crowd in the stand, while the referee is running behind him waving a red card.  Some time later, after the center-half has had treatment, the ref waves a red card at him.  Swindon won the tie comfortably (3:1, I think) and  Guthrie should have been man of the match, sending yourself off was pure class.

I was just counting and I have seen 27 of that list play as well, I am surprised Guthrie is in there but then he only had a season and a bit to get them, was a bit peed off when he went to Fulham...what a fantastic target man he was.

We had waited for a long time for a target man, and then he was gone.  Thanks to Luggy, we will have someone who can hold the ball up, Corr or somebody else if Corr is injured.

I was at a home game against Brentford, Guthrie had a knock and wasn't playing, and was seated with the fans.  He asked to borrow a program, and then went through the Brentford team player by player strength and weaknesses.  He was very accurate as it turned out.  When there wasn't much going on he was discussing the finer points of fishing.  Some of today's players could learn from a very good player who could spend his Saturday afternoon being a normal human being.

I have watched 36 from list. One of my favourites was Arthur Horsefield, who we called "the Horse", perhaps a rather lame one! He did sod all work, but was a good goal poacher and very quick to strike inside the box, from what I remember.

Once heard at the CG, "Horsefield you are slower than a carthorse in labour".

He made a decent center-half when he left Swindon to join Charlton.

  Still managed 53 goals in 139 games though

   I think its fair to say a lot of  STFC fans back then were hard to please.

Arthur scored a few, but missed some sitters.  My memory might be on the slip again, but I recall that Arthur was affectionately called "Dobbin".  Arthur and Roger Smart used to get all the guff from the crowd.  Roger seemed to do the work of two players, but that didn't seem to matter when he gave the ball away.  

We were very hard to please, no hoofball, though, the ball was passed with precision on the deck.  What would Rogers, Thomas, Trollope, Harland, and Noble be worth now?  

Anybody know where Frank Burrows is these days?
