to save hassel buy an external HHD, use your PC's exisitng HDD for IPOD stuff, because i know IPODs can be tempremental when moving files about etc... and use an external one for normal day use, pick em up cheap in maplins  decent size for about 60/70 quid

TBH i've never used one, im guessing they use USB connection and just makes a vitual drive on your PC and when saving stuff make sure you save it to its designated drive e.g F:\
It doesnt need to be permanently attached to your PC either, you can take it with you wherever you want.

USB. I have one. Shows up just as a normal hard drive. You can keep it connected permanently if you want

I dont know, i dont know much about Ipods and wether they can be configured to 2 seperate drives
What it looks like you might have to do is buy an external HDD, transfer all your music/films onto it (assuming the new HDD is bigger than the one thats in your PC) once thats done i think you might have to re-format your Ipod from scratch and transfer the data over from the new HDD.

But dont hold me to that, im not to clued up on Ipods

I dont think it matters which drive it is on with a ipod because Itunes controls all of the music or films.  As long as when you have your ipod connected you have your extrenal HD connected you will be fine!
