There's an offer on at dabs.com for a half decent one for £299 - nothing special, but it'll do for Word/Internet/Footy manager

I recommend you spend your 350 on a desktop rather than a laptop. Just because you get more for your money when it comes to the spec. Laptop's are good if you plan using it away from home though and take up minimal space. Dell is great for pcs at low prices and i've always had great service from them.

Would also recommend dell, should be able to pick up a basic laptop for 350, think mine was 420, but with upgrades

I've got a 5 year old Toshiba Prestige knocking about somewhere.

It's got no CD drive, no floppy drive and only 128mb RAM but it's still good.

My dell laptop overheats, despite me cleaning the heatsink often and reapplying thermal paste. This is becuase it has one fan to save money and is placed at the bottom of the laptop which is piss poor as it sucks in no cool air.

My battery light constantly flashes as if it's critical. Furthermore it only lasts 30mins when off mains power. How fucking portable is that? This happened after a year and a half. I also don't suppose you saw the batteries catching on fire thing in the news a while back? I got lucky and wasn't affected.

It comes pre-installed with loads of shit that slows the machine down. No thanks to that, so I uninstalled most of it.

If you need replacement parts or wish to upgrade components, you have to get them done thorugh dell. Which costs a small fortune. This is why they are keen to sell you the 3 yr warranty at a good price. Chances are you'll want an upgrade, but if you don't go through dell, it will invalidate the warranty.

guess its pot luck, my battery still lasts 3 hours, the fan is barely audible most of the time and i've added RAM off ebay without issues. agreed it comes with shite on it but i just wiped it at the start so i could start fresh.

Had your dell broken down your warranty would have been invalid if you'd put new ram in, unless it was dell ram.

How much was your laptop btw? Mine was one of the 'cheaper' ones at the time (3 1/2 years ago) and it was about £800 I think.

 :o

That's a bit cheap???

Fair play though. I've only got the Inspiron 1100. Oh and just realised it was about 4 and 1/2 yrs ago not 3 1/2. Time flies  :|
