Nice one guys ... What a shocking piece of journalism. This is a good opportunity to tell them how we feel about the ground share again.

I feel like e-mailing the reporter and asking where she got her sources from. She obviously didn't see or hear any of the trouble herself.

Bristol Rovers' decision to spend extra money on policing inside the Memorial Stadium during their derby clash with Swindon Town prevented a possible pitch invasion. For the last few years, Rovers have suffered from fans running onto the pitch on the final day of the season but Saturday's match passed with only a handful of minor incidents.

There is a strong rivalry between Rovers and Swindon and trouble flared at Swindon's County Ground earlier this season leading to both sets of fans ripping up seats and throwing them at each other.

Today police were still unable to confirmed how many fans were taken into custody on Saturday. But they said only a small number of arrests were made before and after the game.

A heavy police presence inside the ground was enough to ensure most fans enjoyed the game between the promotion contenders in the right spirits.

Fans were asked by Rovers to pay up to £3 more for tickets to the game to help meet the costs of extra police and stewards for the all-ticket clash because of fears of another pitch invasion.

More than 1,600 Swindon fans made the trip to Bristol on Saturday. Coaches were given a police escort.

There were a small number of fights on Gloucester Road before the match, leading to a handful of arrests, but the game passed without any major incidents.

Inspector Phil Robbins, of Avon and Somerset police, said: "This was a very successful joint operation between Avon and Somerset and Wiltshire police.

"There were a small number of arrests, but considering the number of people involved, the operation went very well.

"Before the game there were a couple of skirmishes in the Gloucester Road area, and a few people were arrested for public order offences.

"There was one arrest after the game, and a few public order incidents that were all dealt with successfully.

"At 6.30pm the control room was closed down. We had additional staff on in the city centre, but it was just a normal Saturday night."

Rovers have suffered from pitch invasions on the final day of the season in the past.

There was further trouble when the club visited Swindon last December, with 11 arrests in the town centre as fans clashed following violence inside the stadium after the match. Rovers also received a warning from the FA after the recent Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Bristol City, when fans again ran on to the pitch at the final whistle.

On Saturday, police and stewards surrounded the pitch before full-time and no one attempted to cross the touchline.

Rovers were worried that they could be hit by a heavy fine or even a points deduction if fans got on to the playing surface again.

Season ticket holder Sue Chappell, 27, has been a Rovers fan for 12 years and her husband, Chris, has supported the club all his life.

She said: "I did not see any trouble, and I think the police dealt with things as well as they could.

"I felt there was the right number of officers inside the ground.

"It was not intimidating, but when they came out 10 minutes from time in their riot gear it was enough to stop people misbehaving."

No one from the club was available for comment

They've kept the story but just changed the headline to "Extra police prevent pitch invasion" or some such and the new link doesn't allow comments. Obviously not keen on comments which point out that this was a lazy piece of journalism and what a bunch of scum some of the Rovers fans are.

A few of the Rovers responses :

Well Done to our lads. The Swindon fans were causing trouble all day trying to look hard and got what they deserved. a GREAT DAY FOR THE GASHEADS! Beat the Swindle on and off the pitch!!!!
ROVERS TIL I DIE, Bristol

Lazy, slack responses. You should be ashamed of yourselves for tarring all Rovers fans with the same brush because of the actions of some violent, mindless thugs. We all know that elements like this attach themselves to all of our clubs, including yours. But don't let such trivilaities get in the way of your chance to run us down as a club.
Blackbeard, My Ship

And one by City :

See, this is why Bristol City fans dont by your pathetic rag. 100% Rovers bias from start to finish. I feel sorry for the innocent Swindon fans who were attacked by this bunch of morons. Swindon came to Ashton Gate this time last year, and were relegated by us....A potentially explosive situation but not a single hint of trouble. Compare that to yesterday...And yet we are the ones who cause trouble, whilst Rovers fans are whiter than white?? The evening post are a disgrace.
Luke (Bristol City fan), Bristol

A couple of quotes of the Shitty site

QUOTE(City Rocker @ Apr 30 2007, 12:15 PM) *
I've never supported theories of bias against City in the local media and I would be inclined to put this down to lazy research on the part of the reporter concerned. But when contrasted with some of the innacurate and unnecessarily negative reporting on City fans' behaviour in the past, you do have to wonder at the Evening Post's claim to be impartial.

==========================================

My thoughts exactly City Rocker! I've often thought the Evening Post were just incompetent or disparaging about football fans in general, but this is staggering. They really do have an agenda which involves promoting Rovers through censorship and attacking City through sensationalism. I assume this betrays the affiliation of any senior management at the newspaper?

Incidentally, the female fan quoted in the Evening Post piece as having witnessed no problems is married to the Evening Post Bristol Rovers weekly columnist. So that largely sums up what this impartial paper is all about.

When was the last time the Post interviewed anyone with anything positive to say in relation to off-field disturbances at City? When some lunatic swung at Bradley Orr did anyone ask the City fans who contribute to the paper about it? No, they slapped it on the front page and let all fans fall under implication.

The quote from Alan Green of BBC Five Live earlier this season about the number of City fans in the national media kind of makes you wonder how we end up suffering so much at the hands of the local journalists. But when you think about it, I guess it makes sense that City fans are able to graduate on to more prestigious and intelligent and professional national operations while their Blue and White quartered colleagues remain anchored in obscurity writing garbage for local rags.

Who wants to email the editor then? I'm furious! Surely the best way for them to get out of this would be to have written a story about the trouble, not one about a pitch invasion being avoided!!!

I can see why City fans think the paper is very biased towards Rovers.

is anyone else a tad puzzled by the complete silenc coming out of the club? it takes them 10 minutes to throw a statement out normally if we post something we shouldn't or if the consortium dare open their mouths...

yet some fans get battered (by bats not beer) whilst watching the club, and they can't utter a word...

That is disgraceful. Hiding the truth is pathetic and any Rovers fans not involved will go home thinking that a few Swindon fans tried to cause trouble and that was all having read that

The STFC board need to atleast come out and say something about the injuries caused to some of our fans. I'm not asking for an apology because (for once) they are entirely blameless, but they need to look into the matter. The fact they are considering a ground share with these people makes it even more important

You'll be glad to hear that I'm embracing socialist ideologies 8)

The BEP's journalism and subsequent handling of comments regarding their article makes the Adver look like the pinnacle of good journalism.

Swindon fans ran down the street and they then came running back because they were being chased by Rovers fans.

"It was the worst we've ever seen and there was no police presence on the street.

"It's always the traders on Gloucester Road who bear the brunt of thuggery.

"People do not come out on a match day because they are terrified.

"We lost hundreds of pounds of trade."

Sounds to me like he was blaming Rovers "fans" for chasing Swindon fans and for loss of trade on other match days?
