Title: New badge
Post by: juddie on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 08:38:43
So which one do you like - I'm pleased we're reverting to an old school badge. I like 1 and 3.

Certainly would be nice to go back to something a little more traditional.

1 and 3 are both good, but I will be voting for number 3.

And while we're going all old school and that, can we have a 25 year old Don Rogers back in the team aswell please?

Cracking idea but not overly thrilled by the design of the new badges.

Nice progression for the 1990 displayed badge but not sure about that gold trim!

1, 3 or 4.

I'm glad they're changing the logo - there was uproar when they produced the shit one we have to put with now and thankfully it's going back to the old school. bout time if you ask me. Our current logo is absolutely dreadful.

Hammer the club with emails asking for option 5 none of the above!  I can see what they've tried - but they've failed.  Look a bit GCSE to me.

Title: New badge
Post by: mattboyslim on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 09:59:58
Option three has the train in the right place - now make it green, put the football in the corner, put the robin at the top, add soem more colour and hey presto.

Title: New badge
Post by: Batch on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 10:00:12
I think 3 then. Not sure I like the 1879 on it though. Replace it with the ball which should be removed from the sash. Oh and the robin can move to on top of the train and we can put 'Division X' there in it's place. Oh and the train needs to be green.

Not half as shit as those on offer....what do they say.... We're a club stuck in the past, and a fairly distant past as well.....couldn't some clever  type (FB?) design a badge which more reflects today....orange football.....Newbury, cash black hole that sort of thing?

What a shame - Years have complaints have been about the return of the OLD badge not the introduction of a re-working. It's far too red. Option 3 is the better of a poor selection.

What's more significant is that they have acknowledged 1879 as our date of being founded!

They are all much better than the current badge but I dont understand why they have simplified them and taken away the different colours. I would like a cross between 1 and 3 if i had to choose but none of them really do it for me.

Perhaps the club should have asked fans to help design it rather than some company who have no idea what the badge of our club means to us. A great idea to change it, but poor designs.

I think its fair to say, that no-one has any idea what the badge means to "us"....judging by the different responses.

The "traffic sign" badge was designed by some spotty kid from Richard Jefferies School, or something similar.....the lettering was half decent for painting up on walls....indeed a fine example was extant until recently on the wall of the old Clifton Street School.

It looks horrible....I know on the shirts it would be on a red background....the outline would look much better if it was black or even green seen as our kits have a touch of green on it...

Title: New badge
Post by: genf_stfc on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 11:36:35
i suppose they have cut down on the clours to keep it cheap for printing, but I think this casues some problems - firstly i'm not sure how well the predominately red and white design will show up on a predominately red and white shirt, and I like the gold sash across 3, but who will be able to read white lettering on a gold background (surely that would be more visible in black ?).   Plus the leaves at the bottom (trees at Shaw tip perhaps ?!) seem a bit pointless, and as a pedant I like a nice green GWR train..

I don't like the idea of the league name in the older ones though - the implication of the downward pointing triangle seems a bit like a self fullfilling prophecy to me !

For me, I'd like to see the 1990 one, with 1879 in the top left and a robin perched on the top.

If I get an afternoon of free gimp usage I might try and make one to make the bopard proud..

Personally I don't like any of them - why do we need a new badge ?

I'm not fussed about the diamnod one either, most clubs keep one badge as it is part and parcel of the club but is we have to change every 10-15 years

If we have to change the badge then I think the railway one is better.

Does this mean they are renaming the 125 anniversary dinner a 127 anniversary dinner...talk about scoring own goals  :D

How much to change all paperwork, signs etc around the club with the logo on...what a waste of money..can you pay the CVA ?

Number 3 - Every (old-style) badge has had the train on the top - why remove it, it's part of the Town's history.

At least the green has gone, but cue the red and gold kits  :?

Now that is a bloody good point.

I hated reading this today, why the fuck are they coming out with this shit, now? The only reason I can think of is as previously suggested to get one final Newbury-bound rinse of funds via the guise of "marketing/consultancy/branding/stealing"

if you turn the current badge through 90 degrees to the left, or, alternatively, rest your head on your right shoulder, it looks like a little robin, arrrrrr.

I dread to imagine the consultancy and designing fee we've paid Dunwoody for designing these. Is this Diamandis's clever way of stealing the Lukas transfer fee.......or am I just a cynic?

Also, once it's been registered as a trademark, they'll also claim a cut of any sales.

So, vote for 'None of the above.'

Is that true....so say they implement the logo and then sell the club straight after, will they still own the trademark and so still make money from ever bit of merchandise next season until Power and co manage to change it?
If it's classed and registered as a trademark and they hold the registration, then the answer to your question is YES!

Had a look on the dunwoody website and saw this on the our clients page.

http://www.dunwoodygroup.co.uk/ourclients/ourclients.php

We're in tune with our clients.
We enjoy working with clients, feeding off their ideas, getting under their skin, suggesting new ways to achieve their goals and make budgets go further.

Yep, you get under our skin & our budget has gone further.  Where it's gone we don't know but gone it has.

Someone should text into BBC RS and get sniffer Hadwin on the case. ie:

i fail to see how they can rework an old badge and claim money from it if they get ousted out....surely if they have nothing to do with the club than there rights to the 'new' badge would just be classed as stealing from the old, especially if number three gets voted in.

The omission of the original 1980's badge seems deliberate to me, need a change of logo to milk more money

It's absurd - the 1990 badge is universally liked - the new one isn't loved by anyone, just seen as a watered-down cheap replica of the old one, which'll cost more and look poor.

I'm voting option 4 and waiting until they give us a more suitable alternative

Good to hear moonraker - I would like to think that the sensible thing to do is for everyone to vote for status quo (no not Francis Rossi et al), and then if/when things happen with the consortium a proper consultation is undertaken where the choices are actually a) good b) different to each other and c)well considered and not some excuse for marketing expenses to go down a black hole.

Couple of points:

How much have the designers been paid for these as they are pants, and who are they?

Why are we doing this now, havent we got more important things to spend cash on, I assume when it chanes all the signs at the club will have to be changed the headed paper etc? Who will be responsible for this, I assume the marketing company?

I agree that the diamond is rubbish and was introduced to show wehad passed through a bad time in our history. Do you not think they are trying to get on the back of this and suggest that we are getting through another bad period, instead of being slap bang in the middle of a huge disaster!

Why not use the old one, I assume someone owns the copyright, and as the clubs holding company has changed so many times it isnt the present lot?

That is all. BTW they are all a sad poor copy of the old ones, they all look really cheap to me!

I believe we were one of the first clubs to register our badge in 1992/92, many clubs have recently followed suit to do the same - see the new Arsenal badge, it is to give the clubs (and their marketing comapnies/greek advisors) ownership of the use of the crest, stopping unlicensed merchandising etc. The problem with the 1990 badge is that it is basically a bastardised civic crest, so the club don't own it.  i'm sure some decent tweaks would make the old badge 'new' and as such trademarkable, avoiding the problem and the abortion of an attempt that was unveiled yesterday.

Speaking to people yesterday I think the red train will upset alot of people. Apparently Swindons history is with Great western engines so should be Green. Red represents a company called LMS so the club have dropped a clanger as it doesn't reflect the history of Swindon at all unless the engine is green.

So the board are out of touch with the history of swindon....shock horror

Incidentally if they put a Warship class diesel hydraulic at the top of the badge.....then they could have a red one, well at least maroon....Swindon built in the 50's

Indeed they were. Good spot.

Although I never got to see a Warship on the ex-GW main line. Only shedloads of Westerns. They were great.

Quote
There used to be one in the Bury Transport Museum a few years back...assuming its still there could be worth a look on Saturday.

I think there's a Warship or two on the West Somerset?

Ahhh the West Somerset....what a fine day out.....the simulator thing in Steam had (couple of years ago) a footplate view of the West Somerset going into Stogumber...ace.

Were they all on it or something?

I heard someone in Bonanza Cafe this lunchtime saying the following:
"The board are utter utter cunts who have no intention whatsoever of leaving this club. This whole badge fiasco just goes to prove it. And as for the nonsense about a vote, and the agency concerned providing their services free of charge, well that is clearly a BIG FUCKING LIE. That basically confirms it is Diamandis and Dunwoody continuing to assrape money from the club!"
This person clearly was not impressed with the current state of affairs at SN1 and their use of language has been toned down for the sensibilities of the good folk on here. 8)

The Westerns were a very tidy piece of kit, but you have to be a bit careful, as the first batch were swindon built and later were Crewe built.

I have a vague recall of one of the first swindon built Westens being liveried in white.

There must be a site somewhere for listening to railway sounds on the net  8)

This is why we should just leave the badge alone. Why is everyone creaming themselves over trains anyway? Its not like there built here anymore! Before someone jumps on me with the history factor i dont care! Its in the past let it go. Surely it would be more relavent to have a Honda Civic on the badge, especially if Honda could be a potential sponsor?

Have the board each been promised an extension or something?

get real people, the only reason nationwide sponsored us was to support the teams local to their head offices! there aren't too many clubs outside the top flight (let alone clubs of our size) who had such a recognisable brand as sponsor - we were the exception rather than the rule. now, kingswood construction are paying money to sponsor the team, the benefit for them is increased recognition in the local area, whilst the benefit for the club is they receive a bit of money.

and if rovers do come and their fans do trash the place, at least we should be able to get a good deal on repairs and refurbishments.

MANERF UK Ltd. I used to work for them. It's a German company that supplied tank and marine engines for the nazi's in the second world war.

One of the lads I used to work with had a holiday in Germany and went to see a war memorial with his mrs, the war memorial itself was part of an old destroyed German tank. at the point where it all went quiet as the people there took a moment to remember the lost and fallen, his mrs pipes up with

"ooooooo look James, thats the company you work for!"

priceless!
