What a weird day yesterday was. Woke up to be told by resort staff that there was a Tsunami warning along the East Coast (bearing in mind we are a couple hundred metres from the beach at pretty much all our destinations for the next 4 weeks). All beaches from Sydney to Cairns were closed - few friends in Cairns were evactuated to the mountains, schools, office etc. the lot. Pretty scary considering the devastation in Indonesia years back. Thank god it passed us but awful to see what happened to the Solomon Islands. Not sure how efficient their warning system is however if it had hit here I don't think many would have stood a chance. Glad you're ok though. Title: Tsunami Post by: Northern Red on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, 12:39:41 Working better than it was - last May we were on the beach in NZ one day and heard later that night that the "tsunami warning system" had been activated at about 11am that morning.
We didn't hear a thing about it, nor did the locals. Glad it's actually working now! |
