Title: Venables wants to scrap international friendlies
Post by: oxford_fan on Wednesday, February 14, 2007, 05:16:29
So I read in the paper the other day. Good shout, I reckon. When I get the England job on FM I don't bother with any friendlies; you can see how all of the players are doing by watching their club form - much more of a performance indicator than a meaningless intl friendly with a hotch-potch team of England reserves. Also allows players an extra little break, with so many of them getting fatigues from long seasons and summer tournaments I don't think we'd lose out from getting rid of these pointless friendlies.

Just get the players along to a training session; if players are in the England squad they should be perfectly capable of playing together without the need for these matches which half of them miss anyway.

there's a reason why that page is called 'gossip' though - chances are it will never end up being real news. and the story is from the express.

but with the way money runs football i wouldn't be surprised

The celtic league's a good idea, Scotland Wales, N Ire and Eire to compete in a mini league (for a British Championship type title) thus doing away with most meaningless friendlies.

You can't play against your neighbours half heartedly as pride would make want to win.

England weren't interested, which is fair enough.

Should just bring back Graham Taylor's best idea, England B internationals. This way you can get together all the nearly players to take a better look.

That's worthy of being "breaking news" on SSN.

They should have groups of 10,11 or 12 teams for the qualifiers. There wouldnt be time for stupid friendlies then.

Plus we'd get better matches home and away. England would be more worth supporting.

Il never go to another England friendly again. Well maybe to look at Wembley.
