Title: Phil Smith Post by: sonic youth on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:10:07 ...has signed a 2 year contract extension. More to follow.
Title: Phil Smith Post by: Hexagon on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:11:47 Well thats some good news. What about Brez though?
Title: Phil Smith Post by: fatbury on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:12:25 Good news .. he has come on leaps and bounds since Brez got injured .. Ive noticed that he combated his weakness on taking crosses (which was a real worry) by mastering the art of the punch ... considering we havent a goalie coach maybe this was self taught - I dont recall him doing this when Beasley was here ... so well done to Smithy .. fully deserved and hes proved me wrong
Title: Phil Smith Post by: Matchworn Shirts on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:14:47 Great news, I bet we won't sign Brez now
Title: Phil Smith Post by: Rich Pullen on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:15:21 Fair play to the guy... He was desperate for a professional career and for once a player has truely earned it.
Title: Phil Smith Post by: sonic youth on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:16:14 Anyone know if Brezovan has returned to the club after he went home for Xmas? Not been to any games so haven't seen him around.
Title: Phil Smith Post by: DV on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:16:46 fully deserves it.
He's been awesone. As for the crosses, he can come out and claim them and has done in the past, but as I'm sure we've all noticed the winds been very stong the last few games. So in his defence its better to punch than try and catch a ball that could easily blow all over the place. Once we get to spring/summer he'll claim them all Title: Phil Smith Post by: Rich Pullen on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:17:13 Quote from: "sonic youth" Anyone know if Brezovan has returned to the club after he went home for Xmas? Title: Phil Smith Post by: Tails on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:17:55 Well done Phil, fully deserved.

Title: Phil Smith Post by: herthab on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:32:44 Top bloke!
He really endeared himself to the fans with his full time celebration against torquay. Title: Phil Smith Post by: Batch on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:38:14 Phil Smith deserves it. Brez is a great keeper too mind.
I can't think why we wouldn't sign Brez even if it was to sadly later sell him. Title: Phil Smith Post by: Sippo on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 13:54:46 I think Brez will sign. It'l lbe good to have decent competition for goalkeeping positions for a change.

That was amazing! I just remember him at Accrington Stanley standing alone looking totally dejected... He's come a long way since then. Title: Phil Smith Post by: mattboyslim on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 14:00:17 Phil Smith really is living the dream. He really exudes the fact that he's doing the dream job and the fans have warmed to him. The last second save (maybe Shrewsbury or Torquay) was fantastic. The guy deserves all he gets from his career. I just can't believe he didn't play sustained pro footy earlier.

Yeah, everyone jumping on that cage to say he was "fucking brilliant" :D Coming from non-league you can tell he really knows how lucky he is and is prepared to work hard as a result. Reckon we should look to sign more from that level. Title: Phil Smith Post by: Arriba on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 14:10:33 good on the fella, coming from non league and performing to the standards he has is great for him and us!
fully deserves his contract Title: Phil Smith Post by: herthab on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 14:18:23 Fucking hell!
Is this a football related thread where everyone agrees? Has this happened before? Title: Phil Smith Post by: Bushey Boy on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 14:20:04 Top keeper, took him a few montsh to adjust but he seems very steady and is showing he is a very good keeper. Id take 500,000 for brez
Title: Phil Smith Post by: STFC_Gazza on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 15:14:52 He deserves the extension. Very happy for him, Top Bloke. I hope this doesn't mean the end of Brezovan though.
Title: Phil Smith Post by: Frigby Daser on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 15:35:19 Pleased for him...and us. Nice to see proper contracts handed out too - I suppose 2 years means til the end of next season (i.e. 18 months) or perhaps the end of 08/09?
I still think we should sign Brez - whereas Smith's solid, Brez showed he's a cut above - crosses came in and he took EVERYTHING and if it put half as much confidence in the defence as it did me, then he's worth it. Title: Phil Smith Post by: Piemonte on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 15:58:21 OS says 2009
Title: Phil Smith Post by: swindon-chap on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 16:13:21 Phil Smith totally deserves the deal.
At his age he must of been giving up on ever joining and playing regulary for a league team but he's proved he is totally worth his place in the team, looks like he's been in the professional leagues for years! But, you're both right you can see he appreicates is much more, because well...he's had a taste of the other side....working in an office 9 to 5 for living. Where as Shakes, CCP, Nicholas, Weston etc as far as I know have always been footballers....not a dig at them....but I doubt they've ever had to hold down a regular job Title: Phil Smith Post by: STFC Village on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 17:42:46 Can only echo previous posts, totally deserved. He was patient, waited for his chance, then quite literally grabbed it with both hands.
Never thought i'd say this a few months back, but we've hardly missed Brezovan (still hope he signs though....) Title: Phil Smith Post by: Rich Pullen on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 17:54:10 Quote from: "STFC Village" Can only echo previous posts, totally deserved. Agreed. Having two good keepers can only be a good thing. That was a major flaw with King's dealing with Rhys Evans - he never had adequate competition. Title: Phil Smith Post by: glos_robin on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 18:17:15 well done to Smith but I DO think we have missed Brez.
It's no coincidence that since he's been injured we've gone back to being awful at defending crosses. Brez used to claim everything and had a huge reach. Smith is a good number 2 but Brez would be number 1 for any club outside the prem by the looks of it, so he's who I want as our regular first choice Title: Phil Smith Post by: Tails on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 18:47:00 Will he be the same when he returns from injury? No doubt he'll need some friendlies/reserve games before he returns to the first team as he'll need his confidence up.

Its only since Sturrock has come in, we've stopped being able to defend set pieces and crosses. So he is obviously doing something different to Wisey. Title: Phil Smith Post by: Rich Pullen on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 21:11:47 I don't doubt that Brezovan is a better keeper - I'd like to see them fight it out though. Smith deserves his contract because let's be honest most of us thought we were fucked when Brez got injured.
Title: Phil Smith Post by: Fred Elliot on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 21:17:52 what RichPullen said
Title: Phil Smith Post by: millom red on Saturday, January 20, 2007, 01:06:24 Smithy has done more than enough in my eyes to earn that deal.
Brez is a good keeper, and i dont doubt his quality, but the man in the shirt at present deserves to be in it. |
