Title: Sky Post by: Devon Red on Monday, January 8, 2007, 13:30:09 Does anyone have links to sky's profit/loss figures dating to before the start of the Premier League?
And also does anyone know where I can find attendance figures for all 4 divisions, again starting from before the Premier League? Would be very grateful if someone knew where to find tese figues as i've had no luck searching so far. Thanks Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 13:35:15 I think I can give you the references to some books which will have things such as attendance trends, but you'll have wait until I get back from work as it's in my dissertation I did for last year.
What do you need it for? I could get profit levels for BSkyB as well, but this would be from an online source. Title: Sky Post by: Devon Red on Monday, January 8, 2007, 14:39:30 That would be brilliant if you could give me those sources. Need them for my dissertation too. Looking at the effects sky has had on english football. Online sources are fine as I can't seem to find the stats anywhere else. What was the title of your dissertation?

Is probably the best thing you could get. £40 for students (it was free when I got a copy in 2001) Title: Sky Post by: DV on Monday, January 8, 2007, 18:13:29 despite most of the grounds being empty FA Cup attendences this weekend were the highest in 25 years

The title is: Salary Caps in the English Football League: Can They Make Teams Profitable? To be honest it was a pretty simplistic idea but you'd be amazed at how little research there is on this topic - yet so much written about it. I'll have a plough through what I can find now and try and condense it down to the most useful stuff. You'll have to bear with me a bit, it was 3/4 of a year ago I did mine  (doesn't time fly?) Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 19:27:04 Ok forgive me here but I am going to make loads of posts so I can kinda work through stuff methodically....
Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 19:30:16 Firstly this is actually a really good website.
http://www.football-research.org/ There's loads on there but in particular you might find useful in the research and publications (then books and pamphlets) there's a book which has been typed up in full onto the internet :) It's called Football In The Digital Age. There's also stuff about BSkyB taking over ManUre etc so I think it should be really useful. Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 19:32:53 Books
These are useful as a reference. Often they reference other research but they are not research/studies in their own right, so be careful using them too much: *Conn, D (1997) The Football Business: The Modern Football Classic [Mainstream Sport] *Dempsey, P and Reilly, K (1998) Big Money Beautiful game: Saving Soccer From Itself [Nicholas Brealey Publishing]. *Dobson, S and Goddard, J (2001) The Economics of Football [Cambridge University Press] *Morrow, S. (1999) The New Business Of Football [Palgrave Macmillan] Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 19:38:03 http://www.allpartyfootball.com/preleases/apfg1stinquiryreport.pdf
That's a useful pdf. It has also been published in hard copy. Page 4 of the pdf talks about broadcasting money trends since 1992. So might give you an extra reference although there isn't an awful lot else going on here. http://download.yousendit.com/CDDBA4CB4386E152 Below is a brief summary of each: american_insight - this one talks about revenue etc from american perspective but relates it to the direction european football is going. Might be semi useful Hoen & Szymanski - more on americanisation S & F review - skip to page 37 on this pdf for a few more facts Szymanski - terribly detailed, very mathmatical but skip to the conclusion because it really relates to attendance and has some interesting facts in there to boot. That file has the accounts for sky (broadcasting not group) since 1997. Can't go further back than that. Source: http://fame.bvdep.com Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Monday, January 8, 2007, 20:16:52 Lastly....
try using your uni's online search stuff for journals online and also google scholar can be quite useful. Title: Sky Post by: blinkpip on Monday, January 8, 2007, 20:43:01 Pieman homework service. £15 a essay.

Title: Sky Post by: mattboyslim on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, 11:40:01 Liverpool and Man U are two of the teams who would always be near sell out irrespective of opposition. It could be equally argued that Man City, Newcastle and Arsenal who have the three biggest other grounds in the country were all away.
Title: Sky Post by: Devon Red on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, 18:07:45 Thanks very much for the feedback especially Simon. A lot of useful information their, especially the data on sky and the attendances which I couldn't find. I'm in a similar position to you as although there have been a lot of articles, books etc they all seem to say the same things so i've got to trawl through them all.
I owe you several pints for this as a lot of that data is stuff I haven't been able to find so far. Can you PM me your name please so I can acknowledge you in the dissertation? Title: Sky Post by: Simon Pieman on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, 18:09:05 It's really Simon Pieman
