Title: Recommend me some tunes
Post by: pumbaa on Saturday, January 6, 2007, 00:53:43
Need some help folks. Desperate to sample some new tunes as I haven't found much stuff I like recently. To give you an idea of my tastes, I grew up in the 80's (yes, I'm an old fart  :soapy tit wank: ) listening to U2, Simple Minds, Bon Jovi and other middle of the road rock stuff. More recently, quite like the recent Snow Patrol album, so if you could recommend stuff in a similar vein that I might like, much appreciated.

Although anyone who suggests the Black Eyed Peas will be shafted senseless with Walrus's   And no hippedy hoppeddy rubbish will be tolerated either as that just isn't my thang.

FAO NMH - heard of a band called The Fray from Denver? Thoughts?

Hmmm, not so keen on this. Thought it was a little repetitive, if that makes sense. Not really my cup of tea.

The name didn't ring a bell until I did a search and found the following:

http://www.thefray.net/mediaplayer/

When I listened to 'How To Save A Life' I realised it was a song that is all over the local radio stations. And bloody good it is too !

Am just downloading the album of the same name to give it a go.

P.S. You can't go wrong with The Stranglers Suite XVI either.

I'm pissed off actually. They're playing in Cincy the day I go to fucking Atlanta for a week on business

I saw The Stranglers live a few years back. Was never really a big fan until I saw them live, and they were fucking awesome - they actually played a live set for a good two hours at a biker bash up near Matlock, which I just so happened to attend due to it being the venue for a mate's stag weekend. Not really listened to them recently, so I'll check it out.

I always find that American bands like the Fray tend to have one or two decent songs and the rest of the album is utter gash. The one notable exception being The Ginblossoms a few years ago. New Miserable Experience was excellent all the way through. They are still being played alot on the radio. Thats the good thing about America - Nothing ever dates !

If you liked Big Audio Dynamite then try a bit of Carbon/Silicon. Mick Jones (Clash/BAD) and Terry James (Gen X & Sigue Sigue Sputnik). Their stuff is a bit hit or miss, but there are two or three downloadable albums on their website - They are into 'mpfree'. Quite an interesting read and philosophy:

Get hold of a CD called 'Deadwing' by Porcupine Tree. It sounds right up your street. You won't regret it.

Also, according to the reviews on Amazon, Peter Andre and Katie Price's album is brilliant:

Amy Winehouse and Richard Hawley - Very mellow and 50s-ish !
If you like that try Robert Love - Ghost Flight.

Not impressed with young knives .. they were support to Snow Patrol when I saw them last month ... agree with the Porcupine Tree support .. not just Deadwing but all their albums work for me (voyage 34 is a different kind of album!!) ...... also try Pineapple Thief (somerset band) ... or the Meligrove Band (Canadian)

Last cd's I bought were:

Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly which is good.
OK Go, which I haven't listened to yet
Ordinary Boys which I like although is different to their previous two so I am unsure as to why I like it.
The Automatic which I haven't listened to yet.

Jarvis Cocker's album is good and I am currently enjoying Come On Die Young by Mogwai.
