Title: Speakers
Post by: Rossi on Thursday, February 24, 2005, 21:40:25
The speakers that came with my computer have just about packed up.  They just stop playing every so often and usually have a crackely sound in the background.  This is probably because I put them on max sometimes when I have a shower so that I can hear them :) Plus I dropped one of them the other day.
So does anyone have any suggestions on a decent set of speakers to get for my computer, I want something that has good bass because at the moment I have to keep burning all my songs onto CD to play in my stereo.
Alternatively does anyone know if I can l link the speakers from my stereo (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/grahamtilidie/stereo.jpg)  up to my computer so that I can use it for the computer as well? I was going to try doing this but the cables to the back of the stereo (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/grahamtilidie/speakers.jpg)  are those ones that you have to clip in, so do I special wire to link it up or what?

I enjoyed looking at your stereo.

does your stereo have an "auxiliary in" on the back of it? it's one white hole, one red one.

Um you've definately blown your speakers by playing them too loudly. speakers shouldn't really be turned up past the 1 o' clock position if you want them to last. why not get a 2.1 speaker package (two channel with sub). i've got these ones (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/GB/EN,CRID=2173,CONTENTID=7171). not the loudest things on earth but can produce the bass. i suggets you get something similar and look at the reviews on numerous websites.

Unfortunately i dont think there is a way of linking your stereo speakers to your pc. why not put your pc going through your stereo via the aux socket instead though?

Do you rekon I would have got a special cable to do that with the speakers or would I have to buy one?

very dusty

Tell me about it.  Our house is Victorian, and apparently old houses collect more dust, in addition to that my room was part of a recent extension which means even more dust.  The amount of dust I get in my room is stupid.  If I was to lean behind my desk where the radiator is now and blow at it I would probably catch asthma

I have my pc connected to an amp so I can play it through decent speakers.

I've got some of these at the moment:

does your pc have a 2 socket phono output (RCA) for sound? or just headphone? if it's the former, just plug this cable into your pc and stereo: http://www.dabs.com/images/uk/products/Audio_Cables/3BFF_large_150x150.jpg

otherwise use a cable like this, one end goes into your headphone socket of the pc and the other into the hifi:

that's what i'd do if i was at home, connect to my seperates. but at uni i don't have the room for it all!

I've used my hi-fi as my PC speakers for awhile now, it's much better. All I did was buy a cheap wire, one end with a normal headphone jack on and the other with a special adaptor - I'd take a photo if it but my CD collection engulfs my hi-fi. Go into Dixons or something and ask, unless you find the most useless person in existance you should get what you need easily.

edit: just noticed the pic's si posted, mine is the second.

Yeah I think the second one should do the job. I'll see if I can get holf of one.  Doesn't look like it should be too expensive.  Cheers for the help

like yoof said go to dixons. they do one from JVC that's alright. i'd suggest getting a reasonable one, because it will be going from the headphone jack. a few quid extra could make a lot of difference sound wise.

edit: sevenoaks sound and vision will have better cables. Might be more expensive, but you could get something good for £20. It all depends on your budget  really.

Hickmans that would be. dunno if it's still open, but they would sell a good cable. sevenoaks would be your best bet methinks, i get all my stuff from there.

I use these cables

http://ws1.richersounds.com/showproduct.php?cda=showproduct&pid=CAMB-3.5MMATLA

They are very good quality, Richer Sounds is the place to go, the one in Swindon's closed though so order them off the t'internet.

I have loads of space in my room at uni, I've got a double bed and could easily fit another one in.  (Odviously I don't need two beds though).

those cables would be excellent as BWB has suggested.

i've got floor standing speakers as part of my system so that's why it's a no no. I got my first system from richer sounds, but the customer service compared to other places is dire, and although it's cheap (which is nice), they don't stock most manufacturers/lines of stock.

like this:

the red and black cables are the auxiliary in bit. this goes to a head phone-type socket. they cost about £1.50.

why do people spend £hundreds on stereos and spend fuck all on cables? it's like putting cheap oil in a sports car!

why do people spend £££'s on cables when you can get the same sound from a much cheaper one?

I have a pair of £15 speakers form ASDA

They're great

it's all relative to the standard of everything else. Fair enough, an i-pod is not going to produce the best quality sound and an upgrade wouldn't sound too much different.

If i have an amplifier that's worth £350 and a cd player worth £50, it takes away the point in having that amp. It's a bit like that with the cables

I used an iPod once, the sound quality was wank :/

Piemonte has an obsession with Asda.

Yeah the cables do make a difference, once you get past fairly decent then there's not much in it but the cheap ones make it sound really tinny on decent speakers. I got most of my hi-fi stuff off ebay.

the sound from my £400 aiwa 4-unit (tuner, amp, cd, md) hi-fi hooked up to my ipod via the cheap cable is damn good.
