Title: FAO Bartek
Post by: Reg Smeeton on Tuesday, January 2, 2007, 18:32:53
...noticed today  a new shop opened selling just Polish foodstuffs....all the advertising etc is in Polish, which may put off any potential English customers.  I'm always up for trying out new cuisine, but haven't ever thought of Polish foods as being much beyond sausages and gherkins.

There has been a small place, which doubled as a sweet shop, but sold some Polish stuff.....I used to buy a sausage called something like mifsliska there... ... for years, which catered for the post war emigree community.

This new place though is just hard core Polska.....any suggestions as to what interesting ethnic Polish food might be worth looking out for and  the words for it?

i have heared about the new one also, not yet payed a visit tho, i cant see maryla (the owner of the one in grounwell rd) being too chuffed about it.

a few things worth a try:
Kabanos (dried polish sausage) and various other meats (wedliny)

Golabki (translated as pigeons but not worry its only cabbage leaves stuffed with rice and minced meat and whatever you want really)

Piergoi (a large ravioli, with fillings such as potato/cheese (po rusku), wild mushrooms(Pieczarki), cabbage(kapusta), meat(miesne)and even sweet one with blue berries(jagody))

flaki (tripe, ye nuff said, keep away, i cant believe i once likes it)

barszc (beetroot soup, doesnt sound appetising but i tell you its one of the best soups ever)

I'll add some more shortly.

Traditionsal polish bread is real nice too.

I was raised on post war austerity foods....tripe, chitterlings, pig's trotters that sort of thing.

All these things sound similar, make something from what you've got, which in the early 50's wasn't as lot.

Presumably barszc is the same as borsch....which I believe to be Ukrainian.   Poles and Ukranians don't get on too well? Is that right.

barszc is the same as borsch althought i do believe the ukrainians make it slightly different to the poles, its anoter one of those arguament where did it really orignate from, same as wodka.

i dont really know much about the polish/ukrainian relationship reg although they are in bid to co-host euro 2012 so i cant see things being too bad between em.

Flaki are cool - very sharp dish Mniammmm !!!
Try to find "żurek" or "żur" . It's delicious soup .

Yep , barszcz comes from ukraine , but it's very popular here as well .
Bigos - hhmmm...my dad make it the best  :soapy tit wank:
A diffrent kind of sausages - like for example 'biała' ("white") , but you must eat after boiled 15-20 minutes , kabanos is great as well
Kaszanka - cereals with blood of pig  :soapy tit wank:
czarnina - the soup made by duck blood  :soapy tit wank:
rosół - another soup
oscypek - smoked sheep cheese
gzik - white cheese with salt , peper and onion....and for that hot potatoes...

Potatoe Pierogi with Mushroom sauce = best food in the world

Goes down nice with a pint of Zywiec

Then have some Wyborowa or Zubrowka to polish it all off.

Bigos is lovely too, especially when the weather is cold

Pączki (Polish jam doughnuts      lovely)

I'm guessing you can get  Zywiec in the Saveloy.

    What's Wyborowa and Zubrowka?

Wyborowa is (white/clear) vodka as opposed to cherry vodka which is for the ladies. You can drink Wyborowa all night without fear of a hangover as long as you don't drink anything else.

OK I'm into vodka at the moment....but have orange in it as an expression of my solidarity with the Fan's Consortium.   I suppose that's a bit gay....but I'm at ease with my sexuality.

Bartek, is there a polish brandy called Shlivowitz (sp?)

I used to live in a block of flats and had drinking sessions with a bloke from Sweden who had a Yugoslavian wife. They used to pour gallons of the stuff down me and I am sure it was Polish.

Bloody lovely anyway.

another favourite polish food of mine are the simple yet effected ziemniakowe placki, topped with gratted chedder cheese, its basicly potato fritters.

You can get zywiec, tyskie and okocim on savoy, tyskie is my personal fave.

As for wodka zubrowka is loverly, dont worry if you can pronounce it, its easy to spot as you will notice a green tint to it, this is from the blade of grass taken from a field where bison have grazed (probably pissed and shat on it aswell as the legend goes)

Rest easy Reg, orange is okay, just don't have a gut full of Wyborowa and then start drinking ale or other spirits. Mixers are okay.

I tend to work the other way around....have a gut full of ale, then hit the vodka....don't really take too much notice of brands either, working on the basis if you drown it with a mixer it makes little difference.....should I be more discerning?

both stilton and brie are pretty ace.

Brie as to be served at room temperature, you are ruining the experience if you eat it straight from the fridge.
