Title: The back up plan - M4 Junction 17???!!!???
Post by: janaage on Wednesday, December 20, 2006, 09:15:18
As revealed by Mr Diamandis on Radio Swindon this morning, in his first ever interview.

So if they can't redevelop the CG, they plan to move to M4 Junction 17, (Chippenham).

Thoughts?

So it moves to chippenham, then the loyal town faithfull will have to spend even more money getting to watch a match. Train service= shit public transport= shit. If they do it will have to be a lot of developing around there roads etc. And preventative measures to keep the chippenham inbreds out too

All i'd have to say is cunt, i would hate a move that far away.

I've always felt an area of land beyond the control of SBC is the way forward.

We sit on boarders of Berks, Glos and Oxon. North Wilts council is only slightly north of us and pretty much Swindon.

It wouldn't require a huge distance to remove ourselves from SBC's control, which would be positive. Afterall, they've been of no assistance to the club, they claim the club are of no assistance to Swindon. Take our revenue, give it to another Council. SBC are cunts and can go and fuck themselves as far as i'm concerned. I'd gladly traval extra distance knowing SBC can't get the thieving little cunt hands on my money.

there is no reason at all that the club should move so far away from the town!
unless there is a chance of them lining their own pockets of course!

Swindon Town at Chippenham is not Swindon Town any more in my book.  No season ticket for me. It's not about the traveling, I used to travel from Tadley/Basingstoke for 6 years. It's about the location and principle. If I wanted to support a Chippenham team I'd go to watch Chippenham Town.

And you can quote me on that Ritson. Not that you usually ask anyway.

Come on fella's what's the matter with you, we can wake up at 9 every Saturday home game, get down to Swindon train station, catch a bus (due to resignalling works), get to Chippenham station an hour later, have a drink in The Rose and Crown, then get another bus to the ground, watch the Town in front of 3,000 fans, then get the bus back to Chippenham......

You should be back by 8 ish.

For starters, if these crooks move us to chippenham I'll never go to another Town match again. (BTW I live in Bath now so it'd be closer to get to but that isn't the point is it)

Secondly, I was shocked this morning to have my morning slumber rudely interrupted by the words "Mike Diamandis" being piped into the room and that was enough to wake me up instantly. A sobering experience.

It was far from a pleasant feeling having the first noise I conciously heard this morning being Diamandis' voice, and when I heard the fuller interview at about eight it was about as enlightening as you'd expect from someone who has made a living for the last five years by keeping his head well and truly down.

My Thoughts though:

(a) Now Sir Seton's Advisor (or STFC General Manager to give him his new title  ) is 'out in the open' means he has set a precedent that he must surely keep, no more lurking in the shadows for you now Mr Diamandis, which up until now has been your number one weapon of defence.

Take the anonymity away, I believe he loses his entire modus operandi and has to play by the same rules as everyone else,  start taking some responsibility and giving some answers. This can surely only work against him. What I'm trying to say is by finally breaking cover this morning, he has inadvertantly declared himself as accountable as the rest of the board.

(b) I think this shows how desperate the board and Newbury are getting now. This seems to me like a final throw of the dice in many ways. I think the show of Orange on Saturday has rocked the boat, coupled with some fantastic work by the Trust on some sound, sensible, realistic stadium proposals, Diamandis has begun to feel his grip on OUR club loosen. To the extent that he has had to fight back personally.

(c) In my opinion they aren't interested and have never been interested in any ground redevelopment that doesn't mean mass housing and therefore mass profits. They've chucked in J17 as if its a last alternative option this morning but I would say thats probably their first choice venue given SBC are unwilling to give away £25m worth of land (boo hiss to them naturally  ).

(d) The Entrepreneurial Investor. Top one thousand in the country no less. There might be an investor, there might not be. Given that in the last five years the only serious investment Diamandis has bought to the club (which is his job, cos Sandy said so) has come in the form of loans from his boss, I would be slightly erring on the side of "I bet there isn't any sign of an investor you cheeky cunt what the fuck do you take us for". But what do I know I'm merely a fan.
I also like the way Diamandis said, "we won't know until after christmas now, January 3rd or 4th maybe" presumably so he can at least relax and enjoy his christmas. Well you make sure you enjoy it pal, it'll be your last Christmas at our club.

He also cleverly managed to somehow avoid answering his own question by stating that "the football trust haven't even asked us what we want to leave yet" then when Hodgetts asked how much, he sort of went off in a trail of vague platitudes and spin culminating in sort of saying that SSW might sort of sell to someone he kind of likes for lower than to someone he sort of doesn't like. So how much?

This is the time more than ever to keep the pressure on. They are feeling it, and they don't like it, it is working. To quote one red nosed scotsman, its squeaky bum time. These lot must go, and the fans' consortium is the only way forwards now for the club we all love. And WE are the ones who matter.

POWER TO THE ORANGE REVOLUTION!!

Swindon Town Football Club (in Swindon) is the club I support.  If there is no STFC to go and watch I'll have to make do with watching the occasional Hibs game, no other English team will do for me.

Jan - only thing I would say is make sure the eejits in the club know that they are non-toxic and non-flammable. I can just see them arguing that they are a health and safety hazard which would be bollocks.

These are the glow sticks that simulate flares for search and rescue uses. They only last 5 minutes and are very intense. That's great if you want a big show and can trust the people that take them to co-ordinate setting them off all at once. But are we sure that's possible?

Otherwise the normal glow-sticks that are less bright, but last 8 hours might be better. They'd still show up well as we get into the winter, and would be great for night games when the hats and stuff won't be too visible.

They're also a lot cheaper to buy in bulk:

http://www.glowsticks.co.uk/acatalog/GLOW_STICKS_6__BAGS.html

1000 for less than £350

or 2000 for £680ish

A couple of thousand little orange dots glowing away across the stands throughout the 90 minutes would be smart.

Just a thought

It would be good. Got a spare £680ish quid you can give us though?

Holding a glow stick for 5 minutes is enough effort. 90 mins would just be plain annoying. People would throw them away after 10 mins anyway.

If Swindon moved to a ground near Chippenham it would in theory be more ideal for myself.

One problem.

This plan makes me feel sick to my stomach and there would be no way in hell that I'd ever watch Swindon play at home in or around Chippenham.

You could always hang it round your neck, I think they come with a lanyard.

If the OR organisers go for it I'd happily stump up some of the cash, I don't think I'd get away with £600+ mind the missus would kill me.

I just need to sort out this whole paypal thing first though.

I also thought it might be easier to get something called a glo-stick past the stewards and police than something labelled as a flare.

I think they might find the word flare a bit scary, despite the fact that they're just really bright glow-sticks.

if they pack their bags and move to Chippenham then im supporting Supermarine instead. the whole point is that STFC should be your local football team (in most cases as i know some of you travel from outside the borough to get to games) but if we moved to junction 17 it won't be my local team anymore. Supermarine will be. its almost like Mk but on a smaller scale

But the club would argue that their are many fans across Wiltshire like myself who are not from Swindon but support them as they are my 'local' club.

Flaw in their argument is that people want to support Swindon Town and not some Motorway team near Chippenham.

Maybe I'm being amazingly fucking stupid, but what has happened to the town that once took pride in encouraging investment and development in its infrastructure not too many years ago?

We are talking about Swindon Town Football Club, and by direct inference means its location should be in the town of Swindon.

If thats the case then they are far more stupid than I gave them credit for.

Should they consider an idea that goes so much against the fans wishes and views just goes to show much much lack of respect the club has for the fans. They would be guaranteed to lose a large percentage of fans and they seem to be forgetting that without the fans, not to mention the amount of money they put into the club through various forms, they club would be nothing.
