Title: Squad strength, tactical systems and first choice players
Post by: sonicyouth on Sunday, December 12, 2004, 12:48:54
Whilst selecting my first choice eleven under the proviso everyone is fit and healthy, I took into consideration the backup within the squad.

In case you're too thick to realise, the names in brackets would be the reserve team players who would be capable of playing in a position. The question mark by Pook and Caton's name is because they're unproven at this level and I'd be wary about putting them in, however, it's obvious we've got quite a strong team and squad. The question is this - is it being utilised properly?

The above is what I would consider King's preference when playing the 3-5-2 system, however, it's fairly obvious we do not have the personnel to suit that system either in the first team or in reserve. We've got two central midfielders to cover the midfield, fullbacks for the wingback slots and one reserve team coach as the central defensive backup. Not only does the team itself look stronger when playing in the 4-4-2 system we used when we went on an unbeaten run last season but the backup we've got for each position, as well as the competition for places, is vastly improved. In my opinion it is imperative we switch back to 4-4-2 so that we can fully utilise the squad King has assembled - clearly with 4-4-2 in mind - and see where we go from there.

Another reasoned argument from SY.

4-4-2 is defo the way to go. 3-5-2 never really works for us and always seems to make us inconsistent (because of the chop and change of formations). Good managers find a system that suits the team and the team builds on that, trying to improve communication and 'telepathy' between players. The most recent example is JM and Chelski.

I think this is also why England have been inconsistent of late...but will start to improve (hopefully) as Mr Sven is trying to use the same system every game.

p.s. I know you can't always have it this way (due to injuries/bans etc) but SY is right. Our squad suits 4-4-2 so we should still stick to it
