Title: Player changes
Post by: mastapeaka on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, 22:45:21
Sturrock has said it aint a quick fix job here and changes will be made. Fair play to the man as he wants to make us good enough for League 1.

But hang on a min, we're in the play offs and have had a dip since Wise left - we can't have that bad a squad for this league.

Who do we think will be phased out?

I reckon the first to go will be:

Fola
Brownlie
Evans
Brown
Vincent

EVANS?!

i imagine he'll want to strengthen the left-side of defence as he favours attacking/overlapping fullbacks, something which vincent is incapable of doing.

otherwise, an attacking central midfielder/playmaker type in the mould of friio would be nice.

Can we have a right winger who can play football please?

Can't see too much going on straight away, but all those bar Evans I'd say will have plenty to prove plus a couple of others.

If anyone goes it won't be until January. We've got a good squad that are capable of playing very good football, but we still lack any sort of cutting edge. I reckon we could be about 15 points better off if we could finish.

I don't think anything too dramatic will happen. Maybe a couple of loan signings or a free transfer during the window.

From what some people are saying anyone would think we were struggling but the last time I looked we were fourth in the table. That's two points behind an automatic promotion spot and seven behind top. I imagine he will bring in a couple of new faces but no more. I can't see anyone major leaving before the summer.

Players I think Sturrock might not like:

Fola
Roberts
Shakes

I'd agree with that.

Fola's effort is plain to see but he just isn't good enough.

Jack Smith - no way get rid of him, he's decent. Reminds me of Kerslake, nice and calm and controlled.

On Roberts, I'm not so sure....reckon Sturrock will be a fan. He says he wants his strikers to be his playmakers - so that means someone who's good in the air and can get flick ons (Peacock) and someone who's good with the ball at his feet and can put a good ball in the box (Roberts).

Saying that, he says its not rocket science where the changes need to be made....maybe he's talking left back and right wing. Maybe he's talking strikers....your guess is as good as mine.

He was left exposed. Shakes had caught monkhouse-itus and kept pushing into the middle.

Jack Smith IS a decent right back. Easily one of our better players this season.

There will be changes, as i reckon Sturrock must feel that some of our players couldn't hack it in a higher league  (eg) Roberts, Pook.

However the short term fix is to somehow accomodate our strikers in a formation where they can bloody score goals.  Or, keep the current formation, but bring new strikers

I'd expect twho grafters to come in and take the wide slots.  He's a very direct style Manager and has already stated we won't be passing theball sideways.  That mean someone like Brown or Shakes will be out first and replaced with a more combative wide midfielder.  Maybe Shakes may hold his spot due to pace and abaility to defend.  Probably a fair chance Vincent's place may come under threat as well.

You've hardly cleared that up by repeating yourself.

"No quick fix" would suggest that Sturrock isn't looking for a massive overhaul of the playing staff over the next few months, whereas "changes will be made" suggests otherwise. Of course, he could mean long-term changes.... just seemed a little contradictory at the time.

But hey, if you've taken a direct quote from the horses mouth, who am i to argue. GO LUGGY!!! 8)
