Title: Nicky Summerbee Nostalgia
Post by: swindonshawn on Friday, October 27, 2006, 07:51:59
Cast your mind back....Does anyone remember?

Nicky Summerbee appeared on TV (probably record breakers) in an attempt to set (or break) the record for the hardest shot in football. Was he at Swindon when he went on the telly?
Did he break or set the record for the hardest recorded shot?
If he did, does he still hold the record?

I remember him breaking the record and he was at town but I'm not sure if he still holds it. Wasn't the recorded speed 96mph?

It was record breakers, I atched it, and he actually broke the record wearing his swindon kit

Found on the guardian website (dated January 28th 2004):

"But there you are, so we may as well press on. Nicky Summerbee does officially have the hardest shot in football, though his prowess was proved not against Stuart Pearce, but in a dual with Liverpool's David "Budgie" Borrows. As Ed Wilson says, Andrew, your deluded chum is not as deluded as you think. Summerbee claimed the title with a drive of 87mph from standing. Alas poor Budgie could manage only 84mph."

Yes i remember watching Buzzer beat the record and Burrows not doing so well. I also remember John Fashanu who presented it i think at the time having a go and getting a lame 67 mph or something like that.

I think you mean Akabussi having a go? Fash never did record breakers, I'm alomst certain the record must have gone.   At the tiem I think they'd been to every club and it emerged that Buzzer and Burrows were the best two.  These days with the modern balls etc they fly even quicker.

Rooney would win it if he had a go....

Dog by nature but made like a machine.

I reckon Roberto Carlos would be in with a good shout. Thats assuming his effort was more accurate than his free kicks, he might miss the power recording device.
