Title: Football Supporting Crossroads
Post by: DerbyRed on Wednesday, September 27, 2006, 16:16:33
12 years ago, and at the tender age of 11, me and a few mates decided we were going to start going to football games and decided we would head to Reading as being in Hungerford it was easiest to get to, with a direct train line there, and Elm Park not far from the station.  However, my Mum decided I was too young to be doing that, and wouldn't let me go!  As a compromise though, my Dad took me along to see Swindon, as they were closer and he knew the area, and the rest as they say is history!

And so if things had been different I could be a plastic Royal now, enjoying life in the Premiership rather than watching years of Town being rubbish, getting relegated and always having off field crisis'!!  Having said that, I wouldn't change anything and love supporting Town!  :)

I had this chat with my cousin, a Wigan fan, and he said he almost ended up supporting Forest before getting into the Latics and it got me thinking, are there any other of you guys that nearly ended up supporting another team, but in the end went down the path of Swindon Town?

My dad took me to Swindon when i was 6 years old and the love affair started there.

Everyone at my primary school supported Liverpool (who were ace in the 80's) or Oxford.

My dad took me to Swindon as soon as I was old enough. Funnily enough there was actually a lot of Swindon fans in my school anyway so I always had a mate to take with me.

ALways been a Town fan, never anyone else for me!  Although, I do recall a conversation I had with my dad when I was about 10 years old.  It went something like this.

ME:"Dad, why do we support Swindon, how come we don't support a big club?"

DAD:"Because son, Swindon is where we are, we'll always support Swindon.  We were both born here"

ME:"Why couldn't we have been born in Madrid or something then Dad?"

DAD:"Because even if we were, we'd probably have been Athletico Madrid fans!"

My dad supports Fulham but hasn't been since the 70's so I was taken to see Bristol City at Wembley in '87 or '88 as my mum's side mostly support them.  Thought they were shit, and when I was older started jumping on a train with some mates to go and watch Swindon.  Never looked back.

Just think what a huge club I could be supporting now.

My cousin from Gloucester, a Spurs and Swindon fan, took me to Gloucester City v Swindon friendly in '88 when i was 9. This was my first experience of live football.

My Dad hates football but luckily a neighbour went regularly and took me along to the County Ground, been hooked ever since. I remember getting my knee stuck in the railings at the front of Shrivvy road stand the first time I went.

My old man is a workaholic and isnt into any sport. He wasnt about as a kid so my mum arranged for a friends dad to take me when my mate was away.  First game was swindon vs newcastle and there were 3 penalties, 2 being saved, that was it I was hooked for life.  In fact my mrs keeps seeing the bloke who used to take me and keeps saying he has alot to answer for.

The bloke was sound, took me to every game even had a season ticket for about 5 years with him and his son.  I remember once all three of us were walking along Queens Drive to the game, he said ..lads walk on the inside so im closest to the cars...I asked why, he said if a car comes off the road it will hit me and not you...I asked where our season tickets were, he said in my left pocket why? I replied If a car hits you we dont want to miss the game.

A truely great man who I will always respect.

I supported Liverpool as a boy, mainly because my dad did although it did help that they were the all conquering side at the time :)

The 1st game my dad took me too was The play off final in 1990, after that he started taking me fairly regually.  Thanks to this he pretty much supports STFC and liverpool equally now. I've never seen him look so confused as when we played LFC at anfield in the premiership(we were sat in the STFC end) , when Barnes equalised late on he didnt really know weather to be happy or pissed off! Secretly I think he was pleased it was a draw and Swindon did themselves proud.

Up until the age of about 6 my dad used to take me to go and see Bolton. It was at this time that my Grandad took me and my brother to one side and said " look lads, I think you should know neither of you were born in Bolton, and in my opinion you should be supporting the club from the Town you were born."

the following conversation with my mum is exactly how it happened

Me: Mum, where was I born? Grandad reckons I should support the club from where I was born.

My lovely mum: Did he now, your dad's not gonna be pleased about that.

Me: well where was I born then?

My lovely mum: Swindon

Me: No seriously, where was I born?

My lovely mum: I told you, Swindon.

Me: I'm not laughing here, just tell me honestly.

My lovely mum: You were born in Swindon

(sound of my Grandad pissing himself laughing in background)

Me: oh for fuc......

My lovely mum: Get to your room!

My father has never recovered from me turning my back on his team, and can now be found festering in his own filth in a maximum security home for the hard done by.

My dad is a rochdale supporter but due to us living in swindon, he used to take me to swindon games as it was too far to travel to rochdale. Even though we moved away from swindon when I was 5 i've kept supporting them due to these early games I don't have huge memories of.

Italia 90 was my first real footballing interest when i was 6. Gazza was a hero, and he played for Spurs.  As a large section of my family came to the westcountry from London, they had a penchant for the Yids too, so i supported them. A year later, they won the 1991 FA Cup final and that was it. They were my team.

That was until 1993, when my Swindon-born Gramp decided i should start watching 'proper football' and took me along to the County G. I loved the buzz of the live game, and at the end of that season, he treated me to the playoff final.

Ever since then, i've only missed a handful of home games, and try to make 6 or 7 away games a year, finances and effort permitting. I still look out for the Spurs results, and maybe go to the Lane once a season, but over the last couple of years, i've become less and less bothered with them.

I've always been swindon, my dad's gone for well over 40 years and my grandad watched Harry Morris.  I started going when I was 7 in 1990 and before that my dad would ensure I was interested, I remember the whole financial fiasco of 1990.  I had a friend with a passing interest in Liverpool but to be honest i was never more than passingly interested in them, as people have said they were very much du jour at that time.

My first interest in footy was in 1978 when I saw Paul Mariner on MOTD - FA Cup semi Final Ipswich v WBA and he cut his head and still scored a winner ... so for 2 matches I was an Ipswich fan - Mariner still is and always will be one of my heros.

My first game of footy was when I was 8 and still living in London - I went to Highbury to see Arsenal play Swindon in the League cup - 1979 ... it was a 1-1 draw .. My mum was an Arsenal fan and my dad a Swindon fan.

My 2nd game was the replay and my first at the County Ground .. 4-3 to Swindon!!

Since then Ive always supported both (was thrilled to see Mariner appear in the Swindon v Ipswich centenary match at the County Ground in 1980).. but when my mum and dad went to the replay they spent the day in Swindon and found a house to move to .. hence 2 months after it I was here ...

The following season I was going with my dad to a number of games in John Trollopes final season as manager - we ended up relegated .. so naturally I fell in love with STFC and have been going ever since.

Of course I still supported Arsenal and eventually got a silver membership in 1998 - so i started going to home games of both Arsenal and Swindon for about 5 years on and off .. the Arsenal stuff really was expensive tho so I tend to not go so much these days - tho ive been to a couple of games this year to see the new stadium ... I do however have a STFC season ticket again ...

So i guess like most of you who i supported was down to my parents - but its been a brilliant ride and a top couple of sides to support .. never a dull moment. I always find it funny that Swindons finest hour was one of Arsenal's worst tho!!  :Ride On Fatbury's Lovestick:

1985 - (and this is a true story)

My grandad is in hospital, we go to visit him on a saturday afternoon, "whilst your mum stays with grandad we can go and watch the football" says my old man

Me and my brother are well happy, we get to the hospital around 1.30 and for whatever reason dad decides against taking us, not sure why just didn't happen.

What hosptial was my old grandad in?  The John Ratcliffe in Oxford, thank fuck that we didn't go, I could have been a scummer.  A Hibs/Scotland/Oxford fan.  I'd have been Mr Popular living in Swindon.

My first interest in footy was in 1978 when I saw Paul Mariner on MOTD,  the sight of his flowing locks and short shorts awakened something inside me. Once I'd cleaned myself up with my trusty sock I knew that footy was for me... so for 2 matches I was an Ipswich fan - Mariner still is and always will be one of my heros.

My first game of footy was when I was 8 and still living in London - I went to Highbury to see Arsenal play Swindon in the League cup - 1979 ... it was a 1-1 draw .. My dad was an orangutan and my mum was the lingerie section of a littlewoods catalogue

My 2nd game was the replay and my first at the County Ground .. 4-3 to Swindon!!

Since then Ive always supported both (was wanking like a chimp on speed to see Mariner appear in the Swindon v Ipswich centenary match at the County Ground in 1980).. but when my mum and dad went to the replay they spent the day in Swindon and found a house to move to .. hence 2 months after it I was here ...

The following season I was going with my dad to a number of games in John Trollopes final season as manager - we ended up relegated .. so naturally I fell in love with anything with a pulse and have been going ever since.

Of course I still supported Arsenal and eventually got a silver membership in 1998 - so i started going to home games of both Arsenal and Swindon for about 5 years on and off .. the Arsenal stuff really was tedious and shite  tho so I tend to not go so much these days - tho ive been to a couple of games this year to see the new stadium ... cunts, my family the lot of them.

being brought up in mexico city it was very hard to watch english football, but due to a strange satellite placing areas of the city stretching from polanco to chauptepec park and right down to xochimilco we could pick up a small signal run by a company called swindon cable, that is why swindon has a fanbase of 32 million in mexico.

Neither of my parents have never really been interested in football, so I guess my interest in the game in general was very much self-generated through playing the game at school. My formative years were spent in the 70's with Liverpool the dominant force in England and Europe, but somehow I remember watching MOTD sometime around 1978 and seeing Spurs thump Bristol Rovers 9-0 - I started to become interested in Spurs - I had a couple of Spurs mugs that I used to wash out paint brushes

I started pestering my old man to take me to a Spurs game. Sadly at the time, he was more interested in Swindon Speedway rather than football, but I remember him taking me to the CG to watch the Town play Sheffield Utd some time in the early 80's. I think we won 3-2, but Reg will put me straight. And from then on, I have been a dedicated and passionate Swindon Town fan. I don't know what might have happened if my old man had taken me to Trashton Grate - a lucky escape me thinks

I still keep an eye out for Spurs results, and I enjoy playing with them on FM, but I'm a STFC fan through and through.

My dad fucking hates football but i've always loved it. I first started going to the Town games when kids could go for £1 but then i grew up and couldn't afford it anymore. :-(

Then this year my lovely wife bought me a season ticket for my birthday and I'm back on the swindon train! get in
