Nicky Hammon was alright, certainly not the worst keeper we've ever had

Name a worse one then.

If we'd nailed a dead dalek to the goal line it would have stopped more than Hammond did.

Poor, but not nearly as bad as NH.

Did you ever see him play?

Because stopping shots was probably the best thing about him. For several years he was vying with Digby for the No 1 shirt at the club and for whole periods of several seasons managed to keep Digger out of the side, because in most peoples opinion he was the better shot stopper.

He wasn't so hot on claiming crosses though and the least said about his kicking the better.

I 've vague memories of an away game to ?Peterborough? in the days of live ITV matches. 3-2 up with a few minutes to play, thanks I think to a couple of goals from OST, and, out of his area, Hammond slices a clearance straight to an opposition player. FT = 3-3 and I don't think he played again that season. That passback rule basically buggered his career.

As for naming a worse keeper. I'd say 90% of what we've had since have not matched the standards of Digby and Hammond. The current bloke looks quite good, and there was that brief glorious period with Shay Given on loan, but the rest have been pretty fucking mediocre.

Hear hear!  He wasn't nearly as bad as people like to make out - he had his dodgy moments and unfortunately people remember those, not the good ones!  Also, in the prem, the defence was hardly rock-solid was it?  Even Mr Digby let 7 in against Newcastle - so I think poor old Nicky deserves a bit of slack for a change.

I thought he was pretty shit but as said above the quality of oppostition was of a higher standard.

Shaun Taylor scored a hat-trick of sorts in the peterborough game, two at the right end and one at the wrongun'. Alos had a perfectly good Hazard goal disallowed for offside. I was bitter after that game.

Many, many times.

Maybe he wasn't as bad as I'm making out, but I never forgave him for that match at Peterboro - which I still have on video and refer to as the  'Hammond game'. I've seen every keeper since Downsborough who was pound-for-pound the best of the lot. This chap Brezovan looks promising though if he can cut out the clangers.

Granted that P'boro game was bad...remember derby in the league cup though...was it that game he came charging out of the box at the feet of a forward (scabbiadini?) and slid in to claim the ball, everyone thought what the fuck is he doing as he calmy trapped the ball under his chect, slid out past the striker, got up and hoofed the ball clear...

I couldn't remember the Derby game at all, just looked that year up in the Rothmans - Digger played against Derby, NH was in the nets against Millwall and then the Semi against Bolton. Painful memories at Burnden Park.  :(

He was rubbish, and he looked like a hamster - but he's quite a big fish at reading now - sorets all their contracts out and stuff, very highly regarded. They obviously never saw him in't sticks!

Can't remember who that was against then, was defo a night game...

Digger played when we beat Derby 2-1? 'Ockerday scored from the touchline and Jimmy Quinn with that scissor kick from outside the box that flashed past Shilton?

Sometimes everything seems to jumble into one memory

I always remember when he came on for Digby against Norwich i think at home.  Think Digby was either sent off or went off injured.  Hammond came rushing out to the corner of the box, caught the ball while in mid-air, then manged to twist his body round to bring the ball down just inside the box.  Quality moment - Poor Keeper.

Didn't think Tim Flowers would have the career he did after playing for Swindon quite poorly i thought.

I only have bad memories of him. It mystified me how he ever kept Diggers out of the team.

jimmy Glass was probably worse though. Talia was good on hs day.

John Sheffield was crap as was Paul Heald . Evans wasnt as good as he thought he was. We were really lucky to have a keeper like Fraser and to be honest Nightmare Nicky wasnt bad back up certainly better than Matty Bulman or the fella that we have now and even worse the Midget from Cheltenham .

Certainly not the worst keeper we have had in my time, Glass was awful, Heald was pretty poor, Tony Warner looked sketchy.  Hammond made some acrobatic saves, but couldn't take crosses or kick a ball, a bit like our old friend Griemink.

How could anybody be worse than Jimmy Glass?

They couldn't. We're at the bottom of the goalkeeping barrel with Glass, despite what Carlisle fans say about him.
