Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: SwindonTartanArmy on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 14:54:29 After that wee German fud fucked up my countries football team and took us to 88th in the world, King Walter Smith of Scotland has got us back up to 34th in the world :beers:
Wont be long before we are back qualifying for major finals. Just need to sort the coefficent out so we dont get lumbered with World cup winners, runners up and quarter finalists in the same group! Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: Spud on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 14:54:58 Hurrah :-))(

I'm just glad Walter's working his magic, and making us competitive again, if we can keep up the good work, with France, Ukraine and Italy all taking points off each other who knows what could happen! Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: SwindonStevo on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 16:26:53 i dont mind scotland doing well at the moment, because everyone knows how shit you are and your five points clear of italy at the moment....who i hate. this allows me to piss take to all the fake italians.
Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: janaage on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 16:43:20 Back to the rankings, I realise Italy have had a poor start to qualifying but how can the World Champions be ranked 5th, whilst quarter finalist Argies are third?
I know it's done on other results, but surely the world cup results should heavily weight the order? Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: SwindonStevo on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 16:52:21 i understand what your saying and yes they won the world cup but there record in the world cup and since comes up as
played 10, won 6, drawn 2 lost 2....its not a bad record but its not world beating records is it. this is the same team which needed a dogey pen to beat some aussies and couldnt defeat 9 yanks, there not really that good just because they won the world cup. Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: reeves4england on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 18:33:07 Surely world rankings should be based on current performance though?!
In Italy's case they should have been right up near the top after the World Cup but then should have dropped a few places because of recent results. England would be somewhere around 10th because we haven't beaten anybody good for a while. Or am I the only one that thinks like this? Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: flammableBen on Wednesday, September 13, 2006, 22:50:41 Due to the different abilities of the footballing regions, there only being a world cup every 4 years and the range of experimentation in friendlies; it's almost impossible to have a ranking system which means anything.
If you just go by win's then teams like Australia (and to an extent USA or Mexico) are gonna have an advantage becuse they are strong teams in relatively weak regions, however if you just go by who you beat then they will rarely play teams of a good enough standard to represent the strength of their own team. With a lack of competative (non-friendly) international matches which span fifa's regions it's almost impossible to form a meaningful ranking system. Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: SwindonTartanArmy on Thursday, September 14, 2006, 08:42:42 The thing with the rankings is they can only really be used as an indicator and dont really mean anything in the long run, they dont affect qualifying seedings, Its only really a money making thing (the coca cola world rankings).
As for your comment Reeves... Im suprised england are so high, think they would struggle against most of the teams in the top 10. Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: Doore on Thursday, September 14, 2006, 10:03:14 I like Scotland's oh so scottish midfield dynamo, Nigel 'its up north son, beyond newcastle' Quashie.
Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: janaage on Thursday, September 14, 2006, 12:16:02 Bit like "England Legend" Kevin Pieterson, or Allan Lamb, Owen Hargreaves, Mike Catt.
Or half the welsh rugby team or Irish football team from the 90's and 80's. It happens. Or John "Im really jamaican" Barnes. Or Michael "born in Wales with a really really welsh name" Owen :mrgreen:Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: Doore on Thursday, September 14, 2006, 13:10:49 I think I lost this one! Remembering reading about it in Zoo ages ago - its basically where since the very first international, back in yonder year, the winner became World Champion and the only way you could claim that title was to beat the current 'World Champion'!!
I believe Scotland have held the title for the longest, but some crap team like Antigua held it last time I read about it!! Does anyone even know what I'm talking about??! :-))( Title: Scotland on the way back Post by: DerbyRed on Thursday, September 14, 2006, 16:39:22 In fact, I've just found the website for anyone interested:
