Title: Tactics/Substitutes
Post by: Northern Red on Sunday, August 20, 2006, 10:16:53
Wasn't too sure about the decision on substitutes:

(Def) Andrew Nicholas
(Str) Royce Brownlie
(Str) Ashan Holgate
(Str) Lucas Jutkiewicz
(Str) Fola Onibuje

4 Strikers and no goalkeeper. You're never going to need to bring on 4 strikers, so why put them all on the bench. I'll give it that Holgate is a Midfielder/Winger, but still!

I think this is foolish behavior from Wise. An early injury to Brezovan and we'd have lost that Darlo game 8-2. We can't take that risk.

Peacock can play in goal though....slightly

It's a calculated gamble.  I wonder what % of games a keeper actually gets replaced in? very small I would think.

Holgate is seen as a midfielder by Wise and Brownlie can play behind a front 2 if needed.  He clearly thought we'd have enough about the starting XI to hold a lead and therefore have attacking options on the bench.

true, but you can still only use 3 subs...

Id rather we had a keeper on there to be honest, just as a safety net just incase....

its stupid that the leagues havent changed it to 7 subs to be named as in some European leagues

we'd have struggled to name 7 substitutes at times last season

That bloke who always wore 69 during the warmups could have featured if we had 7 subs!

I think 5 is plenty. Makes the substitutions interesting rather than having like-for-like all the time.

Looking at the I would say Nicho could play either CB, LB or at a push LM.
Brownlie can play up front or behind the front two
Holgate can play up front or as Wise seems to prefer in the middle
And I'm sure Fola could play on the wing at a push

As for the keeper thing, I can hardly think of one occasion in around 10 years of following Town where a sub keeper has been needed

I'm pretty sure Alan Flanagan, Steve Book, Craig Farr, Rhys Evans and Bart Griemink were all needed from the bench aswell (since the QPR game)

Didn't Gremink get sent of once, Cheltenham?

And Mildenhall came on a few times too.

Minus the game against Tranmere where he was used as a outfield player.

parkin got sent off at cheltenham.

griemink got sent off for handling outside his area, while inside his area, against leeds in the cup the first time.

I seem to remember Alan Reeves taking over in goal at a game at the CG. Possibly for Griemink, though it may have been pre-Bart man. I have no idea what match it was. Going back a little bit though.

So in conclusion then a keeper on the bench might not be such a bad idea...??

OK my memory has let me down...

But even so if it happens once a season, that is once in (probably) over 50 games!

Think of how many times you could be restricting your outfield options just to have that safety net

Well I suppose 5 strikers could get injured in one game...
