King critical of transfer window

King believes Swindon will suffer from their lack of resources
Swindon Town boss Andy King believes his club will suffer from the introduction of transfer windows to the Football League next season.
King says smaller clubs like Swindon, who cannot afford huge squads, will not be able to sign replacements for injured players outside the window.

"It's going to be a disadvantage unless we can find the resources to improve the squad," he told BBC Radio Swindon.

"At the moment on the resources I'm working under, we can't do that."

The system, which allows teams to sign players only during the summer break and in January, is already operating in the Premiership but it is due to come into force in the lower leagues next season.

Under the new regime, Swindon would have been unable to complete the loan signings of Darius Henderson and Lee Holmes, or permanent deals for Christian Roberts and Steve Jenkins.

"So unless there's a change in fortune at the club, it's about the resources at the start to put a squad together at the beginning now.

"The one's with the largest squad are perhaps going to get the most consistency until the window opens and then we'll see from there."

It's going to definitely hurt.  We seem to be operating on a hand to mouth basis, the opportunity to only strengthen during the summer when we don't have an income is going to sting.

If we can maintain the same squad with possibly a few like for like deals then it's a start but King goes for a major overall it could prove to be a big gamble.

It will mean you'll have to blood your young players, which I think is the reason for having transfer windows.

Given that in all probability there will be a much reduced wage bill, the young players are going to get a chance next season......this is a reason why a wheeler dealer style of manager could become an anachronism, in favour of a better coaching style manager.

Could spell the end for King.

Without the four examples cited in the above article; Roberts, Jenkins, Henderson and Holmes there is no doubt we could well be in a grave position now.

Looking back at last season there would have been no Ifil and Lewis who turned around the run of five straight losses against Port Vale in October and probably saved King his job.

Got to agree with Reg the wheelers and dealers of the lower leagues are going to be a thing of the past.  Those with larger squads are really going to dominate.  With the grinder placed on loan signings there will be no more short term cover for injuries and suspensions resulting in gaping cavities in smaller sides.

If Oldham are anything to go by at the weekend then there will be a few teams who may well not be able to field a side made up of pros.

Change of tactics for King possibly over the summer?  He stated last season that his transfer policy was to go for quality rather than quantity, next season he may need to tip the scales a little.

more tactical managers will be required now. Wheeler dealers will not be required, cause they won't have time to sign players, but of course all teams in the lower league will be affected by it at some point, so we won't be the only ones.

Basically what it means is we'll have even less value for money for our admission fee than we have this season.  Instead of watching journey men footballers we'll be watching youth teamers like Holgate, Pook and Caton.  Great.  Can't wait.  Nice one Uefa take a bow.
