Title: Williams/Nicho
Post by: Doore on Wednesday, August 9, 2006, 09:49:13
Right, I want to make it clear I am not complaining.  Last night, by and large was good.  The effort was there, the football was good in patches, and the winner was a corker. However, I still think Nicho is too hesitant for that centre half role.  He is not commanding in the air, and easily bullied.  For me, Williams, with his stature and years of experience, should be starting alongside Ifil (who was superb all night).

yes, yes & yes. Nicholas looked shakey all game to me (especially 1st half) Maybe with greter experience there he'll look better, but we dont really have that luxury right now.

Play Williams.

I think he's been giving Williams time to heal properly, no point risking him when Nicholas has been able to "do a job".  Someone has mentioned that Wise picked up on our defence not getting tight enough to the forwards, so maybe Williams will gradually be drafted in anyway.

Nothing against Nicho - always liked how he got forward as a left back. Still reckon that's his better position.

Spot on, he was hesitant last night (again, not complaining overall!) - I'd rather see CCP in there ahead of him, but ideally Williams. Millwall fans thought he was good by Championship standrads last year - really should boss the game down here

i'd rather see williams alongside ifil, but in nicho's defence he's done well at centre-back since that brentford nightmare and it would appear that wise considers him a better centre-back than he is left-back.

Agree with all of that apart, looked a bit dodgy first half. Didn't win any headers either.

Have to agree .. although if you look at the goal it was Jerel who stuffed up ... but Williams is the captain and really Nicho isnt a centre back .. so id like to see Ady come in for the game Saturday .. with Evo in for Pook in midfield ... think id leave Roycie on bench as super sub again .. after all Roberts was our best player on Tues and the Cock worked tirelessly for the team

firstly the goal was not Ifils fault, it was Jack Smith who was fucking about with it in the sideline when he could have booted it out for a throw in or a corner.

Ifil put his boot through it and they got a lucky deflection. It shouldnt have even got that far

In Nichos defensive, he was rather solid at Hartlepool, he was alright last night but after the goal went in clearly looked shakey

nicholas is not a centre bank in my opinion.  Got a sweet left foot on him but lacks concentration.

the goal we conceded was in no way anything to do with nicho.if ifil had a left foot he could have cleared it

The goal was a succession of gaffes firstly by Pook, then by Monkhouse, then Weston, then Ifil.....Jack Smith mat have been involved as well.  Very last season.

if anyone should have cleared the ball it was smith, as dv says. after that, the ball just bounced off a barnet player everytime someone tried to clear it and it eventually fell to the wrong person.

I agree-Nicho's and Pook's performances were the big negatives for me.Positives were definitely the blossoming partnership of Roberts and Peacock(superb interplay for the disallowed goal)and an improved performance of Shakes-oh and Evans shored up midfield  2nd half, and of course the winner

Told to hold the centre in the first half. Had to deal with Ifil letting his man run off him and Vincent being beaten to every header. No knowing what Ifil will do in any situation - you have to wait and see - hence "hesitation".

Told to take control by playing his natural reading game second half and attack the ball. Worked a treat. Won every header. Defence looked much more solid.

Williams in today. Nicho resting.

Williams is better than Nicho - but he needs to get 'match-sharp', made a couple of oopsies today which he can't afford to do again.

Williams will become a better player...sure he made mistakes, but he's experienced defender what we need. It was his first start...

On the defensive side, I thought Vincent played better...

We have a squad where there is competition for places and Williams/Vincent/Nicho/CCP will share the left sided defence slots over the long season.
On yesterday's evidence Williams badly needed the game. Vincent will be rested soon.

In Nicho we've got a versatile option that could fill in quite capably for either Adi or Vincent. He's still young enough for us to be able to say 'he'll make a great long-term replacement for Adi...' etc.

What a fantastic performance by Williams and Ifil - solid as two rocks.  Williams controlled it superbly at the back.  Loved the fact he doesn't mess around with it, knocking the ball into touch when in doubt, then reorganise the defence for the throw in.

Was good to see Williams constantly talking to the rest of the defence.

Interesting that Williams as captain many times found a safe touch, and whether this will be a major defensive tactic this year. Perhaps the coaching team prefers to defend  throw-ins rather than hoof it anywhere , inviting more pressure as often happened last season.

It's the old saying if in doubt kick it out.  Gives everyone chance to get back and reorganise.   Easiest way to defend.  We will not conceded that many this year if Ifil and Williams play like they did on Saturday.

i'd definetely agree with that. looks as though that is understood within the squad and everyone is chomping at the bit to stay in the frist eleven.

my first opinion on williams was that he looked like a man who hadn't played for a while and will improve with matches. infact he grew in stature throughout the 90 and looks not only a superb centre half in his own right, but a perfect partner for ifil.

only one goal conceded in 3 games and that was down to some dodgy deflections... keep it up.

Did anyone hear Williams post match?

He was talking about the pre-match drills, which Wise has let him take responsibility for.  Seems like a very intelligent and honest bloke with a considerable interest in coaching in the future.  Definitely sounds like an asset on and off the pitch.
