Title: The Contenders Post by: Miles Mayhem on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 11:40:32 It seems we are the favourites to go straight back up this season, however who will be our main rivals? http://www.ladbrokes.com/lbr_portal
In my opinion I would be most worried about what Lambert can bring as the new manager of Wycombe and Mk franchise seem to be investing well this season as much as I hate every thing they stand for I think they will be the main contenders to our crown. Title: The Contenders Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 11:41:35 I mis-read the title, thought it would be about the boxing programme on monday :|
Title: The Contenders Post by: pauld on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 12:01:41 I'm most worried about being seen as one of the favourites - kiss of death before we even start!
Title: The Contenders Post by: Northern Red on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 12:24:23 Be wary of Accrington - nothing to lose, so they could do a Carlisle and go straight on through...

Shrewsbury will be dark horses aswell. Title: The Contenders Post by: Devon Red on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 15:13:05 reckon MK will be up there at the end of the season along with accrington. Not rating wycombes chances much though as i think they scrwed up their chances of promotion last season for a little while..

I refuse to become over-optimistic for now though and accept that it may not be for us this year Title: The Contenders Post by: Simon Pieman on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 17:52:44 I think top 7 is being optimistic personally. I get ya. Basically you are being optimistic, but will not be too heartbroken with a mid-table finish. I'm glad we sorted out that issue. It was far too serious, serious enough for DMR to enjoy it anyway Title: The Contenders Post by: red macca on Thursday, July 20, 2006, 19:04:11 more than happy with top 7 finish.we really need to sort this club out and maybe a fresh start from the bottom is what we need i think i actually said that half way through last season on here somewhere

Title: The Contenders Post by: janaage on Friday, July 21, 2006, 10:24:38 Oh yeah, forgot about that.
Same applies to him though, big reputation with little to show for it. Title: The Contenders Post by: Bogus Dave on Friday, July 21, 2006, 10:28:15 Two good cup runs, and took an average brentford team to the play-offs twice in succesion. Not thet bad really.
Title: The Contenders Post by: janaage on Friday, July 21, 2006, 10:32:59 He's just a manager that the media like. Out spoken, always has an opinion to shout out, he's not that great. Just a bloke who's not scared of getting his face seen.
I'm not bothered about competing against Wilson and Allen's teams. Title: The Contenders Post by: ibelieveinmrreeves on Friday, July 21, 2006, 10:43:28 Come the end of the season, if we're not first, we'll be perceived to have underachieved (which is the annoying thing). Personally so long as we're not bottom half I will be content, but I'd be most pleased with top 7.
Basically what was said on the last page! Title: The Contenders Post by: OOH! SHAUN TAYLOR on Friday, July 21, 2006, 11:00:46 I don't go with this 'I'll be happy with mid-table bollocks'. I'll be borderline suicidal at anything less than top three - FACT!
Title: The Contenders Post by: janaage on Friday, July 21, 2006, 11:08:01 Play offs will do me, Dennis has a big job on his hands getting the confidence back into the lads. Let's not forget how bad last season really was.
It's all down to how we start... ..come on fella's don't let us down! Title: The Contenders Post by: Reg Smeeton on Friday, July 21, 2006, 11:23:02 The main aim of the season, has to be to show some progress....in a recent interview Lingy reckons of the leagues, there is least difference between L1 and L2, which is why the last 2 seasons the winner of L1 was in L2 previous season..
Last season we were very poor....we've lost some of those players, which is good, but still have a fair nucleus of substandard players.....its not right to expect Wise to turn this around overnight....he'll need to chip away steadily at getting out the deadwood, then crucially show the players he gets in are significantly better. Still think a run all the way in the JPT and no flirtation with the Conference, would be a decent season from what he's starting from. Title: The Contenders Post by: janaage on Friday, July 21, 2006, 11:35:53 I'll be happy with 104pts, championship sown up by March, the new foundations of our 60,000 capacity stadium being laid on the former estate of Penhill (which was demolished to make way for the super-stadion in January 07) and Richard Branson finally taking his seat as Chairman just in time for the last match of the season (no offence BP).
Anything less then I'll be seriously fucked off. I disagree with the "nucleus of substandard players" comment there Reg. I dont think that even last season there were that many who lacked any talent at all, but they lacked fitness , Leadership and in some cases motivation. I hope to be proved wrong, but can't see why these players should suddenly acquire these skills.....I'd prefer to see them leave and be replaced by competent players. i wouldn't be happy with anything less than play-offs, but i'm trying to be realistic insofar as we got relegated because we were rubbish last season so it's simply not logical to expect us to go straight back up - who was the last team relegated from league 1/division 2 that got promoted the following season? i can't think of any, why should we be any different? it's looking increasingly unlikely that wise and poyet will actually play this season so you can discount them propelling us up the table with their footballing talent. as i said, i won't be happy if we don't go back up but i think you have to try and be a little realistic, it ain't gonna be a stroll in the park.
