Title: Serie A verdict tonight
Post by: SwindonTartanArmy on Friday, July 14, 2006, 12:29:10
some time after 6pm.

Reports I am getting from friends in Italy are that Juve, Lazio and Fiorentina are all being relegated and points deducted. JUVE getting a 20 point deduction! Milan stay up but with a 10-15 point deduction.

I got this:

The Italian media is reporting that Juventus will be relegated in the wake of the match-fixing scandal that has rocked the country.

The reports currently circulating suggest Juventus, the country's most famous club, will be be playing in Serie B next season, with a 15-point deduction.

Two other clubs, Fiorentina and Lazio, are also set share the same fate.

The Italian press also claims that AC Milan will not be relegated, but like Juventus and Fiorentina, will be barred from competing in next season's Champions League competition.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed the verdicts of the match-fixing trial involving Juventus, AC Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio will be announced this evening.

The announcement regarding the fate of the Serie A clubs, as well as the 25 people under investigation, will be read by the Federal Appeals Commission president Cesare Ruperto in Rome's Parco dei Principi hotel.

Television broadcasters and radio stations will not be allowed to transmit the verdict live.

If the reports are correct, a whole host of top Italian talent could be up for sale, including World Cup winners Fabio Cannavaro and Alessandro Del Piero.

French World Cup final stars Patrick Viera and David Trezeguet have have been linked with Manchester United, while Lilian Thuram could link up again with his old boss Arsene Wenger at Arsenal.

Think its a major shame that a country wins the world cup with all their players playing in their own league, yet withing weeks of it they will all be buggering off elsewhere :(

Once again it is the big clubs that get screwed over while the little clubs get away with a fine and slapped, oh, um, er.

In all honesty if that sentance is passed because they are guilty then I guess it is fair. They cheated, they get relagated. To do otherwise would make it look as though cheats do indeed prosper, thus calling my mum a liar and forcing me to go over and headbutt them for the insult.

its part of the reason they won the world cup in the first place though

It is a shame but I think if they have been cheating then they deserve to be punished strictly.
It ruins the game, whats the point in turning up as a fan of the other teams if the big guns are getting away with match-fixing?

A very small part in my view. It did spur them on a bit, but they were already a good team before the tourney and were more willing to go for more goals rather than kill off games

I dont agree with this. not sure if you're referring to all countries because look at what happened to us and we are a relatively small club when we were demoted. however, forest did a similar thing recently and only got a fine. The big premiership clubs I feel also get off a lot more lightly in comparison to the smaller clubs. I don't feel that the punishments are of equal proportion.

What hasn't been mentioned yet as far as I am aware is the fact that 3 of the teams have been relegated, so surely 3 teams must get automatically promoted from Serie B to balance it out?
Same goes with the Champions League you would have thought.

Juventus were also stripped of their last two titles and had 30 points deducted meaning that they are almost certain to stay down for two seasons.

Lazio were penalised seven points while Fiorentina suffered a 12 point penalty.

More to follow.

This means Juve start on -30? :D

So when does the appeal and verdict on that take place then? Presumably next week?

I'd be suprised if they were we-instated to seria A, but I wouldn't be suprised for the point deduction to be reduced.

i think that the appeal has to be done by the next friday because that is when the clubs who are entered in europe have to enter there squads who are legilbe to play in europe

Not a good time for all the fiorentina fans then is it?? Just wondering if juve might go down again next seson. They're (probably) going to lose all their best players and are starting at -30 points. One bad run for them and they'd seriosly struggle. Unless i've missed something.

i think what juve will be doing is leasing some of there best players i.e. Cannavaro, Zambrotta and Emerson to real madrid until the end of the season.

Here’s a brief rundown of all the sentences handed out.

Juventus:
Demoted to last place in 2004-05 season and stripped of that season’s title. Their 2005-06 Serie A title win has also been wiped out. They will start next season in Serie B with 30 point deduction. Former directors Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo banned from football for five years.

Fiorentina:
Relegated to Serie B with 12-point penalty for 2006-07. President Andrea Della Valle banned for three years and six months. His brother Diego, the club’s honorary President, suspended for four years.

Lazio:
Relegated to Serie B with seven-point penalty for 2006-07. President Claudio Lotito banned for three years.

AC Milan:
They stay in Serie A, but will start next season with a 15-point deduction. They are deducted 44 points from last season’s point tally which means they have not qualified for the Champions League. Vice-President Adriano Galliani banned for a year. Rossoneri official Leonardo Meani suspended for three years and six months.

Refereeing officials:
Designator Paolo Bergamo deferred, Pierluigi Pairetto banned for two years and six months. President Tullio Lanese banned two years and six months, Vice-commissioner Gennaro Mazzei banned for a year, observer Pietro Ingargiola cautioned.

Cannevaro will be off, no doubt.
He is 32. He is not going to wait for another 2-3 years to play European football again.

They said the last two seasons serie A titles will be declared void.

Good to see the Italian F.A handed out harsh punishments,Juve deserve everything they get,the cheating fuckers have been at it for years :x I feel a bit sorry for Lazio and Fiorentina though, the way i read it they saw how Moggi had conducted business and decided if they couldn't beat Juve they'd have to join em.
