it's been awhile since we had one of these, so what films have you seen recently that you've enjoyed, what would you recommend and what are you looking forward to?

i must confess that i'm looking forward to the new pirates of the caribbean film, johnny depp is such a dreamboat. i also like the look of hard candy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/), a hard hitting thriller with an interesting role reversal.

meanwhile, i've been watching some swedish films from director lukas moodysson. last week i watched tillsammans (together) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203166/) and today i saw fucking amal (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0150662/). both are very interesting films in different ways, tillsammans is about a group of people living in a commune during the 70's and has the happiest ending of a film you could possibly imagine. in contrast, fucking amal is about teenage lesbians. in broader terms, it's more about teenage life in a deadend boring town, but avoid if you dislike sentimental stuff.

other class films i've seen of late are the big lebowski (obviously) and another coen brothers' masterpiece, miller's crossing. i'd rate it as better than the godfather in terms of mafia/gangster films. i've just got fargo from a mate, so i shall watch that in good time.

one of the more interesting films i;'ve seen recently is requiem for a dream, probably the most disturbing film i've ever watched. it's the only film that's ever made me feel physically unwell and whilst i find some of it difficult to watch because the direction feels to pretentious and arty for the sake of being abstract, the story is compelling and the cast is superb. i'd recommend it.

Recently got around to watching Sweet Sixteen, absolutely awesome film with a cracking storyline that I really wasn't expecting to be so good.

not seen that myself yet, ken loach film if i'm not mistaken? i believe we may watch it in film some point this week. i'd like to see it.

isn't ken loach's film company called sweet sixteen as well?

speaking of mr. loach, watched an old 60's 'kitchen-sink' drama of his the other week, called cathy come home. it was surprisingly good.

Ken Loach, yeah.  Dare you to try and watch it without subtitles :D  I can get virtually all of it, although I strongly suspect that's because I've spent a fair bit of time in Sweatieland.

i watched young adam without subtitles and didn't have a fucking clue what was going on, it made the film all the more bizarre

i've seen hard candy, i thought it was pretty average, 2.5/5. good performance by the lead girl but the 'arty' camerawork got quite annoying.

tried to watch bruce willis' 16 blocks the other day, but had to turn it off after 20mins as it was utter poo.

the crow (brandon lee) wasn't as good as i expected.

shaolin vs wu tang is a great film.

I watched "The Da Vinci Load" the other night. I can see why everyone was protesting about it - it's absolutely filthy.  :D

Hahaha ace. I've seen the Da Vinci load. Bit of a wait for the first good scene, but it kicks off in that lesson.

If you're a Coen's fan you must watch Fargo, and their first film Blood Simple, both are masterpiece's.  But for me the best film they've done would be Barton Fink, the acting and multiple levels the film plays on are brillant.

As for Requime For a Dream, you should check out the director's (Darren Aronofsky) first film Pie (as in the maths symbol), which is a great religious thriller.

I've never been much of a fan of any movies from the DOGMA genre, and after watching Lukas Moodysson's Lilja 4-ever, it will take me a while to watch any more.  Although i did think that Lars von Trier's Dogville was very good.

My dad took me to see x-men 3 last week- Glad I went cos I needed to catch up on some sleep.. :sleep:

i've got fargo and pi on dvd, borrowing them off a mate. will get round to watching them soon.

don't think moodysson really comes under the dogma manifesto, tillsammans breaks one of the main conventions in every possible way.

On your recommendation, i've purchased it on play, along with Amelie (not seen), Downfall (not seen) and Shawshank (seen, adding to collection).

I saw that last night; thought it was very good but was a tad long at 2 1/2 hours. Wish I'd see the first one though as I got confused at the end; one of my friends had to explain who the bloke was at the end to me afterwards.

Going to see the Superman film next; anyone seen that yet?
