Title: car advice Post by: sonic youth on Monday, June 26, 2006, 18:51:20 An imminent change in finances means I'm able to replace my car at long last. I've got a budget of around £5k but there is a little room for flexibility, depending on insurance costs etc. Second hand only obviously and hatchbacks preferable.
I've been looking (over and over and over) at a Golf GT TDi, seen an X reg for just under £5k in good condition, not being an expert it sounds like a good deal but not 100% sure. Parkers guide says it's worth more though... Any other recommendations? I'd like something solid but nippy, I've been driving this Clio for 2 years and I can chuck it around the roads with no problems so don't fancy driving a piece of plastic which'll fly away in the wind. Insurance is a bit of a stumbling block as well, but I've got 2 years NCB and can get further discounts with Direct Line due to my parents car being insured with them. Anyway, recommendations, thoughts and so on and so forth please. p.s. this means I will drive to away games next season so lifts will be available Title: car advice Post by: Leggett on Monday, June 26, 2006, 18:55:06 i have a fine 1987 mazda 323 4WD turbo you can have for £4995... :soapy tit wank:
hmmmmmmmm, theres loads of cars you could have. honda civic, ford focus, vw golf, skoda fabia, seat ibiza/leon to name a few... all fair enough, probably wanna aim for 1.6 or 1.8 versions of these or they'll be pretty gutless. Title: car advice Post by: Sippo on Monday, June 26, 2006, 18:58:23 For £6k and a half you can have my car with personalised plate. Low insurance, full pug service history. Low mileage for year (only 30k)...
Title: car advice Post by: sonic youth on Monday, June 26, 2006, 19:01:13 sorry mate, i'd have near-death flashbacks everytime i drove it ;)

Title: car advice Post by: Ralphy on Monday, June 26, 2006, 19:44:35 For £5k you can get a very nice and tidy Clio 172 :)
Their fast as fook Sonic and compared to your current Clio, the build quality is light years ahead. Climate control too. Otherwise I'd go for the Golf TDI Title: car advice Post by: Dazzza on Monday, June 26, 2006, 20:50:49 Style over substance.
Blow it on a nice 95 XJ6, spend the rest on insurance, a sheepskin jacket and packet of cigars and pray it doesn't go wrong. http://www.monchar.com/images/members/58900/58850_15400.jpg Title: car advice Post by: Kinky Tom on Monday, June 26, 2006, 20:52:50 I'm with Dazzza
Title: car advice Post by: pumbaa on Monday, June 26, 2006, 21:29:08 Golf TDi would be a good choice. They hold their value well, the diesel VW motor is one of the best around and expect to get 50mpg or thereabouts. Solid car, albeit a tad heavy which drops the performance a little. Expect maintenance costs to be on the heavy side though, so get it checked out thoroughly by a mechanic. Audi A3, Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia use the same chassis and engines, although you'll pay a premium for the german name and supposed build quality. I'd personally go for the Leon for best VFM, despite the fact it looks like a Mk 3 Astra to me.
Don't bother with flimsy froggie cars. I just found a 2003 Mazda 6 and an older Lexus IS200 for under 5k on Auto Trader. Can't go wrong with Jap crap for reliability and loaded with equipment. Title: car advice Post by: Leggett on Monday, June 26, 2006, 22:14:40 ralphy, i would enjoy seeing the insurance price for a clio 172 for young jimmy...
Title: car advice Post by: Nomoreheroes on Monday, June 26, 2006, 23:49:28 I've never understood the need for a Fireball XL5 or a Turbo Nutter Bastard car. For me the car that gets me from A to B most cheaply and in most comfort has to be king !

A 172 Insurance quote would be high, but not ridiculous. Their group 16 insurance. My CTR is group 17 and i pay £1100. Thats 24 years old, parked on drive, 4 ncb. End of the day, it's what he can afford. I suggested the 172 cos of it's immense pace and superb handling. He would love it. Title: car advice Post by: sonic youth on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 06:27:10 the 172 looks fucking awesome but it's well beyond my means i think, the insurance would absolutely murder me.
group 11/12 is probably my maximum in fairness. Title: car advice Post by: Sippo on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 07:24:38 Mines group 6 8)

Title: car advice Post by: Amir on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 21:42:44 Whits has hit the nail on the head there. Doesn't have to be travelling but there must be better ways to spend that kind of money than on a hunk of depreciating metal.
[there I go again] Title: car advice Post by: sonic youth on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 21:47:15 i don't have £5k to spend as i want, sadly, as the 'rents have designated it as car money.
otherwise i'd be dropping out of college, making like a tampon and getting out of this bleeding hole. Title: car advice Post by: Dazzza on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, 22:06:49 Go out to Germany watch the World Cup and pick up a Citroen in exchange for a croissant on the way home.
