Title: Graham Poll
Post by: Scot Munroe on Thursday, June 22, 2006, 21:20:17
Had a gentle shocker refereeing in the Aus vs croatia game. Booked a croatia player 3 times. Sent off 3 players 2 from croatia 1 from australia. missed 2 clear penalties. 1 was a handball and 1 was a clear rugby tackle on mark viduka. Just blown his chance on doing the world cup final

As I posted before when Poll showed a red before the yellow.....this fella is supposed to be the Prem's best, and is a professional.  Only in England and Japan do you find professional refs.

That we can't produce a top class ref is as much a disgrace, as producing an international side that can't deal with corners and long throws.

Still I'll always be grateful to Poll for missing a blatant Chalkie handball when we beat Newcastle in about 92, and he scored the winner.

Graham Poll certainly cheered me up this evening, the third yellow for the croatian was after the final whistle too.

Not a bad one to start with...it was in fact Nov 91...that win took us second and a point in midweek at Charlton took us top of the second flight.....its a long way back before we can hope for similar again.

Poll is generally piss poor over here though, being one of the worse Pro refs.  I think he gets selected because he fits the Fifa bill of clamping down on whatever they want clamped down on, rather that some refs tendency to ref as they see fit.

I know it will never happen, but wouldn't it be nice if a few ex-pro's qualified to become referees?
People who actually understand the game, and could use a bit of common sense when need be.
But I think there is a lot of training/qualification to be done (a few years I think), plus the pay is nothing compared to what they get playing I suppose.

its not really the money thats the problem though.it is the time it takes to get your qualification it takes a good few years to do it then they have to retire at 45 or something like that

I saw him speak at a Sprtsmans dinner earlier this year at Molineux and he mentioned that!  Seemeed to imply that referees even things out over a game if they make a cock-up.

William Hill are off 10/1 odds of him not refereeing anothr world cup game. Very very tempting....

exactly, a ref needs to understand both the rules of the game and also be considerate and understanding of players' actions and the motives behind them - if you've played a bit yourself i don't see why reffing shouldn't be too difficult as most kids reffing their own matches illustrate perfectly.

i'm going to get into reffing next year, i've still not done a match yet.

Clarification please!

The first time I saw Graham Poll was when we beat Newcastle 2-1 in 1993 (the Hoddle promotion season). He awarded us a slightly dubious penalty when Chalky threw himself down in the area when we were 0-1 down. I would be surprised if he had refereed us before that against Newcastle

Sorry to question you oh Great One

i recall there being at least one or two ex-professionals refereeing in england. i'm also fairly sure that the best referee i've ever seen was an ex-pro, but my memory has let me down on the name...

You could well be right....2-1 wins v Newcastle used to come along at regular intervals back then.....I knew there was something he did to benefit Chalkie.

Can we agree that he had a slightly naff wedge style haircut?
