Wish we were more than 1-0 up at half time.

Bloody shite abc commentary and coverage.

US idea of covering a game:

1. Start transmission just as the ball is kicked off
2. Stats on the earliest goalkeeper substitution in a WC game
3. Ashley Cole: A great attacker.
4. Ref blows for half time. No review. Straight to commercials.
5. As I type. Back to soddin basketball !
6. Back to game and view of 3 x blonde tottie. Now commercials again !

Despite all this crap, we need another goal methinks !

Disappointing game:

- Defended well and killed the game in the 2nd half
- Dire game to watch
- RoboCrouch penalised for everything
- Linesmen hot on throw ins..Who cares !!
- Poor yellow cards
- Abc commentator goes on about Robinson being in the select club of keepers that have scored a goal in a game. He also saved 2 penalties...Didn't mention it was against Swindon.

england fans always get carried away before a tournament...overly confident. ive ALWAYS predicted semi final at best. this performance = quarter final at best.

i think the heat was a major factor today some of them looked dead (gerrard)

Title: England Vs Paraguay
Post by: Ben Wah Balls on Saturday, June 10, 2006, 15:27:29
The first half we played very well and outclassed Paruguay, should really have been more than one up.

Didn't really start the second half too well but I didn't think the substitution worked at all. Crouch will always provide plenty of knock ons from balls he wins in the air which is great if you have Owen there to to get on the end of them which worked very well in the first half but when Crouch is isolated with no-one within 30 metres of him there is no-one he can head it down too so there is no point in just playing high balls to him.

If Sven wanted to take Owen off then surely he should have brought on Walcott or there is no point in him being there. Also it was dissapointing than Aaron Lennon didn't get a chance as his pace could've been a big help in the second half.

The delivery in the second half was also much worse, in the first half it was superb and led to the goal.

Hopefully it was just the heat that took it out of us but we can play a lot better. The important thing is we got a win though, need to beat Trinidad and Tobago now and then we can think about giving Rooney some time to get match fit.

Post by: Dazzza on Saturday, June 10, 2006, 15:31:09
I'd agree we were crying out for a striker to come on in the 2nd half after they nailed down Cole in his hole.

Crying out for Dafoe really.   As BWB and Ian Wright mentioned there's not much point in young Walcott being there if he's not going to play.

:(  Bit of an anti climax really. The game was slightly dull, and its a bit worrying that we did'nt score any ourselves but to be fair we had alot of chances and I still think we'll win the games coming up too but it won't be a walk in the park. Lampard looked shit hot, I have a good feeling he'll score some beauties for us in this competetion. Gerrard worked his arse off too.

Not a classic seconf half performance :) But a commanding if not deadly first half.

Crouch can not play as the loan attacker Sven. It's OK pushing Joe Cole up bu he needs someone along side him as an out and out attacker.

At the end of the day we have 3 points, 2 more than anyone else in our group. A win against T&T and we can put our feet up a bit.

Title: England Vs Paraguay
Post by: DV on Saturday, June 10, 2006, 18:39:54
That was dogshite, we created about two chances in each half....only one of those was any good and it went in.

Strikers, got nothing and did nothing.....

Too much backwards and sideways passing, not enough get up and go. 2nd half we were crying out for Rooney to pick up the ball deep and just drive forward at their defence.

agreed adje, sadly i think his deadball ability makes him almost a neccessity as we'd have been fucked without him today. i'd much rather see a winger who will take players on, trackback, you know - actually play like a winger.

oh hang on we've got one!

the ref was shite as well.

look at the stats and facts on beckham and you will realise how important he really is to enland (and madrid)i would love to have a winger who attacked his defenders but until we have a winger who can create as many chances as beckam does he will do the job

Bring on Trinidad and I hope I'm not being too optimistic expecting atleast 3 goals from England on Thursday.

I took your advice Macca and looked at the stats and they told me that once again,Beckham's pass completion rate was by far the lowest of all the England players, proving that factually he gives the ball away more than any other player in the side. This, sadly,is not a one-off either,it is the case in practically every England match

The last time our primma donnas came up against a commited side of lower league players who got in their face...namely Norvern Ireland....they didn't fancy it much, could easily be something similar on Thursday.

Post by: timmyg on Sunday, June 11, 2006, 16:27:25
I think Beckham contributes much more than a lot of people make out. His pass completion rates will be lower than others because he's the only one that puts any crosses in. And most of the crosses are pretty damn good: if not finding the striker then at least going pretty damn close. Much more effective than a lot of other players who go past a player and then pass it backwards/knock it out.

Having been too drunk to remember the game, i've just remembered Hargreaves and Downing came on. Forgive me if i'm wrong, but wasn't our best winger in the warm up games Aaron Lennon? He can play roght or left, and should have been chucked on way ahead of the massively overrated Downing. And i can think of 3 players in our squad who should play the holding role ahead of Hargreaves.

I don't get Ericsson.

Oh, and how obvious is it now that we needed a Defoe or someone in the squad for whan Mickey Owen inevitably fails to produce again...?

The ITV news mentioned Walcott has picked up a knock and missed training today.  Not that it seems to matter, the poor lad seems to be nothing more than a mascot at the moment.

Poor Owen looks a yard off pace at the moment but he has to get 90 minutes in against T&T.  Later kick off so hopefully won't be as hot as Saturday which should help.
