Mark Devlin has played down rumours that Swindon Town are poised to swoop for Rochdale striker Rickie Lambert and Grimsby goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall. The club's chief executive confirmed new manager Dennis Wise has spoken to 'half a dozen or more' potential new recruits but said no signings were imminent.

Reports yesterday suggested Swindon were about to bid up to £150,000 for Lambert, who scored 22 goals in League Two last season.

Relegated Town have also been linked with a move to bring Swindon-born Mildenhall back to the County Ground.

Devlin said: "Dennis and I have spoken about half a dozen or more players but no signings are imminent. A lot of players are away on holiday at the moment.

"Rickie Lambert is certainly not a name that Dennis and I have discussed, and I think I would have heard about it if we are supposed to shelling out £150,000.

"Mildenhall has not been named by Dennis either and we have not heard from him or his agent."

Swindon have confirmed that Paul Smith, who had been offered a new deal by previous manager Iffy Onuora, has been released.

However, Devlin said the club had changed its mind about physio Dick Mackey, who has been offered a new role primarily with the youth and reserve players.

Devlin also said the future of Ian Woan should become clearer after the former head of youth development meets today with David Tuttle, the man lined up to take his place.

Meanwhile, Swindon are still trying to arrange a high-profile friendly on July 29. Chelsea, Leeds, Tottenham, Watford and Stoke, have been approached.

The club also intends to hold a board meeting later this month where 'a number of issues' are expected to be discussed including the possibility that new director and £1million investor Bill Power could become chairman.

i have to admit i think there is something in this lambert story even though devlin has played down rumours

Can't work out if this is dissapointing or encouraing.

Dissapointing in that if the above is true I am impatient in wanting to see who Dennis can attract!

Encouraging in that this may be the standard 'nothing to see here' statement trying to ward off other clubs sniffing aroung and scuppering things.

They've recycled an old story anyway.

If Rickie Lambert isn't a name thats been discussed they are fucking stupid, it's a name that SHOULD be discussed.

I'm impatient. That Wise bloke is back on Friday so I imagine next week will be a busy news week.

Devlin has rejected every name mentioned thus far. Even the press get it right every now and again! I think he's keeping his cards very close to his chest until the manager returns.

As he cut the players break short, I think we have every right to demand he cuts his break short.
Dennis, get your arse back into the office and sign some players, the speculation and lack of activity is killing us.

what with Lukas Jutkiewicz and Andy Caton maybe not being given contracts too now according to the adver today we will need at least 8 or 9 nine signings

 Is there anything this bloke can't do! Long shots, scores from close-range, can take penalties, free-kicks. Looks a bargain for 150,000.

I hope Jutkiewicz doesn't leave. There's no guarantee he'll be able to break through into the first team properly but I wouldn't of thought he'd be asking a lot so it's got to be worth holding on to a player who has shown some promise.

The lack of activity is for every club, so Wise being back right now would not make much difference.  Every bugger is on holiday in the football world that's not involved in the WC.

does seem like one of those standard 'nothing to see here' interviews.

I guess partly because we dont want the whole Rocastle thing to happen again

'we've signed craig rocastle'

'no we havent'

even if Town had talked to Lambert, why would Devlin mention it until he's signed? So that we can all be disappointed if it fell through, to attract more criticism than he already gets if it went tits up, to increase lambert's price by attracting other buyers? Come on, play the game - Mark won't disclose any names until they're in the pipeline or signed - if you're expecting him to say 'yeah, we're in talks and you neverr know, we'll see what happens' then you'll be disappointed, and naive.

Bill Power was quoted in the last programme of the season saying that iffy would be here next season - just because we're not talking about certain people doesn;t mean it ain;t happening... that's the game!

Bill Power should definitely be made chairman, it just makes sense.

I'm not sure what truth there is in this Lambert rumour, isn't the only source a notoriously unreliable rumour website? Sounds like a good player though.

We do need to spend money in the striking department we can settle for free transfers in the other areas.
