He's done alright landing that one. Not a fan of him at all but it's good to see him getting back on his feet after recent events. Quote Northampton have named John Gorman as their new manager on a two-year deal, in succession to Colin Calderwood, who has joined Nottingham Forest. Gorman was Wycombe manager last season, taking them on a 21-game unbeaten league run, but was released from his contract at the end of the season. "He has a wealth of experience and has countless contacts at all levels," said chairman David Cardoza. "He plays attacking, football and his record proves he gets results." Gorman is currently out of the country but club general manager Tony Clarke said he was already familiarising himself with the job. "At the moment he has a long standing engagement that means he is abroad, but that has not stopped him cracking on with things," he said. "He is spending a lot of time on the phone talking to our current players, as well as those out of contract and possible new signings. "He is busy at work already and getting down to business." Did very well at Wycombe until his wife died and he was offered compassionate leave. Then after the season finished Wycombe did the dirty on him and terminated his contract. I for one hope John leads Northampton to a great season next year. His Wycombe side were made to look like Brazil when they played us in the cup last year. Proper football, that's what we need! What summed him up perfectly for me is when he told Julian Dicks in his scortcher of a season before he was injured that if he grew his hair he'd get an England Cap. I'd have to agree with BWB here, nice bloke or not nice bloke he was a fucking disaster for STFC. If Jan had a bit of luck earlier on in the campaign things could have been a lot different.
Don't think the blame should be 100% put on John G. I would imagine it was the board who would have negotiated the terms of the contracts of the players that Gorman signed. Least the bloke likes to see football played in the proper manner. Probably just too early for him and at too high a level. The main thing that annoyed me was spending money on the wrong players, apart from Fjortoft some of our big money signings were a huge waste of money which crippled us for years. Beachamp, Robinson and Whitbread were some of the worst value for money. If you spend £600k on a right back which was a lot of money at that time then I'd expect him to be top class.
David Hay has to be given credit for finding Fjortoft too though as he worked with him at Lillestrom. I think my patience snapped after the away match at Villa (0-5) and we were driving back toward the Fosse Way and my mate said he would never watch STFC again that season if JG came on the radio and said "we played the better football..." Nuff said...he didn't and neither did I that season again. |
