Title: Lost Star Wars Intro Post by: Dazzza on Thursday, June 1, 2006, 09:42:22 Does anyone think watching that and having seen the prequels and parts of Return of the Jedi that Lucas was a tad lucky to say the least with the first three films? Had he been given the technology and budget would he have turned a New Hope into the sort of dross that was Episode I?
Title: Lost Star Wars Intro Post by: Nomoreheroes on Thursday, June 1, 2006, 12:52:15 I don't think you can compare Dazza. Star Wars was really the first of its kind and set the standard for future movies ie introducing 'realistic' special affects to the world. It set the scene for The Empire Strikes Back, which was a better film. After that, the Star Wars films were pretty shabby. Episodes 1,2 & 3 were clearly an attempt to milk the cash cow 3 more times ! Episodes 1 & 2 being the dross that led up to the only thing that really interested Star Wars fans - How did AS become DV ? The film had a couple of clever bits, but as a stand alone film was utter pap !
Ummmm...arrrrgh ? Have I painted myself as a bit of a nerd ? I'll get me coat ! NMH Title: Lost Star Wars Intro Post by: Dazzza on Thursday, June 1, 2006, 13:11:07 Ha Ha :o
Fully agree but the bearded midget wrote them all in sequence, which had always made me think how he managed to make such classics off the back of the storyline of three episodes of Disney rejects. The effects are cracking in New Hope at the time but it was probably one of my first films and became the benchmark so maybe didn't sway me as much. But the storyline and scripts while no Don Juan are in a different league to the dirge of I-III. Having seen that clip it made me wonder if he’s been one very lucky sod to get what he did get right all along! Title: Lost Star Wars Intro Post by: Nomoreheroes on Thursday, June 1, 2006, 13:26:28 Not sure whether you have the Star Wars Trilogy box set, but the 'Making Of Star Wars' dvd that goes with it is very intereting. It tells all about how Lucas got the idea, combined various religions, symbology and folk lore to write all the episodes and make the movies....ahem !...apparently !

What about 2001?? That was the film that really showed people what could be done. Don't get me wrong, Lucas Arts introduced many new techniques, but really the only thing Star Wars started was the merchandising movement (toys, lunch boxes etc....). Also as for how Lucas came up with the ideas for Star Wars, you should watch some of Akira Kurosawa's back catalogue, especially "Kakushi-toride no san-akunin" (1958)(aka The Hidden Fortress). He pretty much stole the characters and alot of the story lines from it.
