Sean: I want to stay here
24th May 2006

SEAN O’Hanlon has revealed he wants to extend his stay at the County Ground and, with negotiations well under way, admits he ‘does not foresee any problems’.

Town’s skipper admitted to growing frustration with the uncertainty hanging over the County Ground, but a double arrival on Monday looks to have cleared up his future.

While Dennis Wise and Gus Poyet were being unveiled as Town’s new management team, O’Hanlon was receiving his two-year contract offer at his Liverpool home.

He says there are still one or two small things to be ironed out but, describing Wise’s arrival as a huge boost, seems set to start the 2006/07 season in a Town shirt.

He said: “I finally got my contract through the post the other day. I had been given it verbally a few weeks ago but obviously with all this going on behind the scenes I didn’t know what was going on.

“My agent is looking at it at the moment and talking with the club. I am negotiating to stay with Swindon though. I like it here and things are underway to make sure I am here next season.

“There are still one or two small things to be ironed out but at the moment I don’t foresee any problems. It should all be sorted out within the next couple of weeks.”

The prospect of League Two football next season is not a pleasant one for the club but, with Wise and Poyet in tow, a brighter future could be on the horizon.

“It is a great boost,” said O’Hanlon. “They were both massive Premiership players and their arrival has to be good for the club.

“Hopefully the fans will come back and we can bounce straight back up with a good start to the season behind us.”

On the basis of his performances last season, I would agree. But he has lots of potential, somewhat like Ifil. The new management team and a quality defensive coach could get the best out of these two. Emphasis on could.

I also think being Captain puts too much pressure on him.

Just my opinion.

Agree with all of that, he is talented else wouldnt be playing but isnt captain material as that takes a certain prowless on the pitch.  Gurney (dare I say it) would make a better captain.

Surely a Captain has to lead by example. Gurney does not.

I'd regard SOH staying as good news....his forms dipped at times this season, but he has shown he's good enough for L2...if he'd looked wonderful he'd be gone.

Until the ink is dry on a contract, though, I don't believe a word the modern player speaks.

O'Hanlon got talked up a lot by King (whilst slating Ifil every week). But any scout who came to watch last season cant have seen much more than a very average player. Also does he still live in Liverpool? Thats not very commited is it?

But I think he has got potential. Maybe with some better coaching he can live up to the hype once bestowed on him.

Post by: magnum150 on Thursday, May 25, 2006, 20:07:40
All very true there spence. I remeber when he first came on loan and scored his first goal. Can't remember who we were playing but he looked a real class act.

Somehow he has never looked as good. Still a good defender though and I hope he does stay as he should be a quality player in Lge 2

A player can live where the fuck he likes (within reason). It's silly to suggest that because he doesn't live in Swindon he isn't commited.

True.Maybe if Nicholas still lived up North we wouldn't keep on hearing about his exploits :-))(

Although i think Seano had a bad season, tbf who didn't :( ,i'd be happy to see him stay, but i don't think he should be captain.

It's fairly obvious he wanted out, else he would have signed by now. I suppose the lure of some more money and the new stadium was too great.

We're better off without him if he doesnt want to be here, plus it sounds like we may get some money, which will be a bonus. I have faith in Wise to get a decent replacement in.

Hes not even told anyone at STFC about any offer from the sounds of it til the deal was done.

The two good things are

2. At least we get some kind of fee, although in all likleyhood it will be fuck all knowing what the tribunals are like.

This could be a similar situation to Rhys exit though............

Player wants to stay but with improved offer, realistic offer is never tabled therefore leaving player technically no offer to accept?

He has held out for some time so if he was desperate to leave then perhaps he would have gone sooner?  Maybe he was given the impression a revised offer was realistic which never materialised?

I'm in two minds....

Either he knew he was going to go and was jsut waiting for clubs to come in for him, or he wanted to stay and was waiting for an improved offer. In a way I'm happy what the board have done. They've basically said 'here's yer contract, take it or leave it'. They can't break the bank and Wise probably has irons in the fire for replacements.

Time to move on. We got Williams who will more than likely be captain and will hopefully sort Ifil out.

He's never achieved anything really has he? He's never shown any loyalty to the clubs he's been at either and he's a grade A tosser.

Way over rated IMO, that's why so many clubs turned him down and he was forced to take the Franchise job.

Look at the media attention Millwall got when they were doing well with wise in charge. If that can be replicated here then O' Hanlon is a silly boy. I doubt you would get the same media attention at MK if they were doing well.

That’s one hell of a shitter for a Monday morning.

Not sure what’s worse the fact he’s chosen to join Franchise or that he’s gone against his word to the club and fans.

He seemed like a good lad as well so it’s a bit tragic to see him end up at the club anyone would be hard pushed to argue a move is down to a footballing decision.  If he’d have gone to a League one club fair enough but Franchise, Franchise?

spot on.

i'm not going to call him a cunt for leaving, he was poor last season but i thought he might have been much better with a little more experience alongside him this season. unfortunately, without him we're stuck with jerel ifil.

thats just typical of our board. how can you not blame him for going though? if it was Brentford or Colchester i could understand it but MK? a side that wont even challenge next year in league 2 and hopefully be relegated to the confrerence where they belong. i think his eyes lit up with pound signs and for that i can blame him as much as i like

I thinks a bit harsh on Ifil.  Next season he will be playing with more experienced older heads and I think he will do well for us. If he doesn't he won't be in the team.  Simple as.  Our defence was young and inexperienced last season, this year it won't be.  Give him a chance and if he still hasn't improved under Wise, then it'll be time to get rid.

its hard to be positive when we sell without doubt in spite of what people say .. our club captain and our best defender ... when we are already short in various areas .. goalie .. midfield .. attack ... at least it looked like the defence was sorted ... and then this!

I wonder what full compensation at the tribunal will equate to.

Arguably a couple of hundred grand with any luck but these decisions are always notoriously slow and inadequate.

Curiously I read Dongs had a bid of 100k turned down for Swansea’s keeper the other day so they appear to be splashing the cash about.  I wonder where the cash is coming from and why the sudden urge to start flashing it about as they’ve been operating on pennies and pies the past couple of seasons.

I see "Martin" on the abomination's official site has labelled it as a done deal over the weekend in which case I'd guess Sean has signed and that's the end of it.

Were unlikely to hear from either again until the tribunal I'd have thought as there's no contact really necessary.

That Dongs website makes me cringe almost as much as the side.

Quote
MARTIN'S MONDAY MESSAGE
Good morning everybody and I do hope you've had a good weekend, apart from the obvious disappointment.
This weekend, we have signed Sean O'Hanlon from Swindon and Drissa Diallo from Sheffield Wednesday. Both players have a wealth of experience, both players are centre backs and I'm sure both players will be an asset to this club.Drissa was out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday and is therefore a free transfer and Sean O'Hanlon was also out of contract, he is under 24 and therefore we will go to a tribunal to settle his fee.

Next time somone sees him would they politely tell Martin in the nicest possible way to go and fuck himself and not to forget to then thank Martin after.

Not that depressed about his departure in all honesty - when the going got tough he wasn't one to stand up and be counted, which is odd given that he was given the captaincy.  Hopefully we'll get a fair whack for him in compo which will be reinvested in the team.

peoples issue (including mine) is always going to be

"I want to stay"
"I'm going to sign the new deal"

then 2 weeks later leaving for a smaller club in the same division as they've offered more cash. Much like Smith except without the smaller club bit.

Compare that to Heywood, who got much less stick than smith even though he went the same way down the M4, at least he was relativly decent & honest about it. Just said "I fancy a change and am going to leave for a club who will pay me more on longer deal."

As a fan, thats a whole lot more palatable than being fed insincere bullshit for months.

i see your point but do you also see that if something is offered to you it's in your best interest to see what they have to say? maybe ohanlon was going to sign last week and then he gets a call from martin allen who although is a bit of a twat is a impressive young manager and maybe ohanlon was sold the club when he was taken round the new staduim and what the club are trying to achieve?

Firstly, I've slagged him off way before he left

Playing ability, he played more games than any other outfield player in a shit team that got relegated. He was the heart and soul of a defence that couldnt defend. He was supposed to be a leader, but not once did he stand up to be counted. Not once did he drive us forward, not once did he set an example

SEAN O'Hanlon's County Ground departure was initially viewed as a joke' by the club's chief executive but Mark Devlin is deadly serious about getting the best possible tribunal price for his former captain.

The 23-year-old has joined Martin Allen's Franchise after turning his back on the three-year deal on the table from Town.

Holidays and knee surgery were thought to have been the only delays in the player putting pen to paper.

Massively disappointing' was Devlin's diplomatic official response but there is no question that club officials are privately seething about the situation.

continued...
Devlin said: "I was in Amsterdam on Saturday preparing to make my way to Gelsenkirchen when I had a call from the player's agent telling me he (O'Hanlon) was talking to another club.

"I thought it was a joke at first but obviously not. I'm massively disappointed in the way it has been handled.

"I know Dennis (Wise) had an opportunity to bring in another centre half last week but didn't. There you are.

"I'm sure Sean has his reasons for this decision and we respect that.

"Still, life's too short. No one player is more important than the club and we move on.

"I'm sure Dennis will now look to strengthen again."

And while Devlin is unhappy with the way matters have unfolded, he is determined Town will not lose out financially.

He said: "Sean was our club captain and had been offered a three-year contract.

"That will be reflected in the level of compensation we will be seeking should the matter be settled by a tribunal.

"At this stage we have had no contact from Franchise to discuss any financial agreement."

O'Hanlon himself told the Swindon Advertiser that he felt it was time to embrace a fresh opportunity and while his Town exit was tinged with disappointment, he was excited by the future.

The former Everton man said: "I think I was ready for a new challenge but I don't have a bad word to say about the club.

"I owe a lot to Andy King for taking me to Swindon and to all the staff who helped me during my time there.

"Being handed the captaincy meant a lot, especially as it came so unexpectedly. The highlight was the play-offs, the low being relegation last season. I just think Franchise feels like a big club in disguise and capable of doing a Swansea' if you like."

It all leaves boss Wise needing to find a new skipper for the League Two campaign.

While O'Hanlon is definitely out' the club are hopeful of completing formalities with young midfielder Curtis Weston.

Verbal agreement has been reached between player and club on a 12-month deal for the former Millwall man.

Chief executive Devlin said: "Curtis has been given a copy of the contract and we're hoping things will be tied up shortly, subject to Football League approval."

im sure he left cause of the arrival of williams...maybe didn't want to compete with ifil and had the chance of definite first team football at mk.

For what it’s worth it was definitely an undisclosed fee.  Everton have it officially quoted as such and the Adver piece from the time reported that an actual deal was struck for the move with Moyes with no mention of a free transfer.

The only mention of a free transfer cam a month before when the Mills deal was still on but remained undisclosed.  If you scan through the Adver archives a “mystery hitch”, which turned out to be Spurs, prevented the free transfer going through.  The loan deal was extended - presumably for a fee to be agreed.

O'Hanlon was definitely free. The £150k was indeed what we would have got for Leigh Mills had Everton signed him.
