Meh

Quote
FORMER England under-21 keeper Rhys Evans is in discussions with Blackpool about joining the club to contest the No.1 spot with Lee Jones.

Evans, out of contract at Swindon, held talks with Pool boss Simon Grayson over the weekend and stayed at Peter Clarke's house during his visit to the North West.  He is a mate of the Seasiders' skipper from their days at Lilleshall when they played for England schoolboys.

Indeed the pair attended a reunion in London yesterday, when they mixed with Joe Cole and other members of that Lilleshall squad.

Evans has been offered a new deal by Swindon, which he is mulling over, but he is also free to talk to other clubs.  And Clarke, who is doing his best to 'sell' Pool to his friend, reckons there are encouraging signs that suggest Evans might join.  "Obviously he hasn't made his mind up yet, because it depends what personal terms the club will offer him and so on, but he was impressed with the place," said Clarke.

"He has asked me different things about the place and I've obviously told him about the club and given him some inside info.
"After that it's up to him. He has to make his own decision."
Evans, 24, has been number one at the County Ground for the last three seasons.

After playing for almost every England age group he was snapped up by Chelsea and trained alongside Carlo Cudicini.  After loan spells at Bristol Rovers, QPR and Leyton Orient, he joined Swindon in the summer of 2003 and has developed into a highly-rated goalkeeper.

But despite performing well in his 32 starts this season, Evans couldn't prevent the Robins from dropping into to League Two and he is now looking at the possibility of furthering his career elsewhere.

Evans held an hour of talks with Grayson on Friday, shortly after the manager had informed his playing squad who he wouldn't and wouldn't be keeping for next season.  Clarke thinks Evans is the right man for Blackpool and added: "Rhys is a good keeper – you don't get signed by Chelsea for no reason. He learned a lot there and he also has plenty of experience in the lower leagues with Swindon.

"He liked the look of Blackpool but it's early days and he has to look at all eventualities so we'll just see what happens."
Goalkeeper has long been a problem position for Blackpool. A string of loan keepers have passed through Bloomfield Road – something Grayson witnessed as a player.

Pool went into last season with just two keepers on their books and when Lee Jones got injured in the third game, then boss Colin Hendry had to complete the hurried signing of Les Pogliacomi from Oldham.

As a boss, Grayson seems keen to ensure he doesn't have a similar problem and if Evans signs, he will join Jones and Lewis Edge as one of Pool's three keepers.

Pogliacomi was one of those released by Grayson over the weekend.

But Evans's signature is not assured.
Swindon boss Iffy Onoura has offered him a new contract and said: "I have spoken to Rhys and given him until the end of the week to let me know what his plans are.
"I have a holiday booked for a week at the end of May and I would like to use as much of the time before I go away to make plans for next season, so I have asked him to let me know."

They've got a Latvian lined up to pump money into the squad, I think they actually brought in seven decent players around Christmas to help them stay up so the cash is there or there abouts.

Tough call for a keeper though.  How many clubs actively looking for a keeper and can virtually guarantee a starting place?

Not many I’d bet but reading that article Blackpool may be just one of them.

No-one came in for him last season, so he needs to be realistic...if Blackpool are offering decent money he'll go....end of.

Same sort of thing happened with Mildy and Notts...he'd only just signed with us , but Notts doubled his money....you don't stick around.

FWIW I see us ending up with Steve Phillips.

Im not to disapointed.  Hes a great shot stopper, but cant kick a fucking football to save his life.

When i went to watch Town play both Bristol Shitty and Donny, Evans consistantly fucked up his kicking.

Pogliacomi is a fucking awesome keeper.  If we somehow got rid of Rhys and signed Pogliacomi,  then that would be an awesome deal

the fact that phillips & pogliacomi have been released shows there will be loads of half decent keepers available on a free, so whats everybody worrying about.

evans really ain't as special as everyone thinks. he'll be easily replaced.

blackpool isn't so bad, at least he gets to play on the pleasure beach  :?

I don't blame Evans for talking to any club willing to offer a contract. He has to do what is best for him and his family, only an idiot wouldn't at least concider better offers and higher league football.

Why Blackpool? Quite, not really career progression but maybe that is all that is on offer. Some Tangerine on MOS said that there is some Latvian who has nearly signed on the line ready to invest significant (but not world conquering) funds into the club. And isn't one of thier players Evans friend.

In all honesty Blackpool itself is a fun place to visit but a dreadful place to live. It smells of wee and sick and has an unhealthy number of ladyboy clubs. But I bet there are nice places outside Blackpool to live.

In all we would be losing a good keeper (kicking aside). Sad, but IF we can get a half decent replacement the outfield problems are far more significant priority to resolve.

No such thing. Every player has a price. Every player has ambition to better themselves.

We fans kid ourselves that the players think like we do, share our loyalty for a club. They lagely don't, and even when they do circumstances change and players move on (Smith from Leeds for e.g.)..

Come on guys, LGC is right, keepers from L1 and L2 are all much of a muchness really.  If Rhys does go we will be able to offer a keeper a guaranteed starting spot, that's got to put us in a decent recruiting position.

Rhys is of course entitled to leave, he's got to ensure the future of his family, while playing at the best level offered to him.

Finally if he does leave it WILL NOT be Iffy's fault Fats, I honestly do not see why you are so anti-Iffy?

You seem to think that all his plans re fitness this close season are a token effort, it's widely regarded that our failier last season is partly (a large part) due to a complete shambles of a pre-season last term under King's regime.

Iffy hasn't gone out and signed a bunch of no-hopers like you think he is going to do, ffs give him a chance to put his own team together and stamp his authority and style on it!

Managers all start somewhere, your manager of choice (long ball Lou) started out here, I wonder how behind him you were then, or Ossie, or Glenn.  It's not all about experience, look at Watford this season!
