Title: Iffy to get new assistant
Post by: Dazzza on Friday, May 5, 2006, 08:45:14
According to the old wireless the big man is set to stay with an "experienced" number two coming in to work along side him in a coaching capacity.

Interesting to see what names eventually enter the frame after all of the rumours over the past week.

Good call though and I'm glad the board have backed Iffy sooner rather than later and the addition of a solid number two can only help in his transition to a first-class gaffer.  Hopefully Iffy will have a fair amount of input into the appointment and it'll be a willing number two rather than someone who's going to be linked with the manager's job as soon as things go even slightly wrong.

Any names for the frame?

I'd rather get an experienced manager with Iffy on as assistant.

Can't say I'm that impressed with the news Dazz.  Would have preferred Iffy to have been asked to be the assistant to the new guy coming in, so he can learn at a safe distance from the action.

Can't see many experienced managers wanting to be a number 2 to a newbie, in league 2.

What Dazza said.

Powers money, Power must trust the person tasked with using it, Powers choice.

Same here, if I’m being honest I’d have rather seen a senior man take over the helm with Iffy remaining in a number two position but I can’t argue with Iffy remaining in charge and being given his chance to shine next season with his clean slate.

Have to agree it’ll be interesting to see how they balance out the new appointment.  I can’t see Holloway coming in for all the tea in China to work under Iffy in League two unless it’s either in a director of football role in which case we may as well appoint him manager now and get it done with or if it’s a temporary measure which is all is all well and good until he disappears in a couple of months.

Then there’s the pariah’s, the manager’s consistently linked but never appointed to roles like Molby, Machin and Quinn.  More of a nuisance than of any real help with one eye on the top job and having collected more P45’s in a career than most people have had hot dinners they may be experienced but experienced in what?

A Don Howe or before he soiled himself a Jim Smith appointment would be cracking.  A wealth of experience and a proven history as a number two without sniffing around the top job.

Would Duncan Shearer do or do we want more experience?

Can't see much or any chance of Holloway wanting to be assistant to Iffy, Holloway is the more experienced and successful manager so if either of them were assistant it would be Iffy.

Not sure there's much mileage in this, but Mick Harford is out of work.

Was just looking at the bookies list for walsall manager:

Keith Curle, Ian Atkins, Paul Hart, Mick Harford, Gary Megson, Andy King, Colin Lee, Chris Nicholl, Graham Rix, Steve Claridge, Ray Graydon, Simon Osborn, Mark Kinsella, Martin O’Connor and Mick Halsall!

Someone out of there might be a good shout. Not sure who'd work under Iffy though.

King would be a good appointment.

Back in the 70's we had Danny Williams, in what used to be known as a general manager role.

This would now be called Director of Football....it consisted of offering advice, scouting for players and  doing behind the scenes entertaining and so on.

Danny strength was scouting players, same as King.

What they didn't do was any picking of teams or coaching, or media stuff.

Will be announced on Monday, King to be paid in advance with postal orders.  There is a clause in his contract that he has to be further than 100 feet from a microphone at all times.

Danny detested losing, and I think didn't have much time for piss artists. I recall Danny had a very low profile as G.M.  King should have continued as general manager a long time ago, but I think that he would have never accepted the situation of not picking the team and keeping a low profile.

Danny signed Peter Noble, ... he deserves a knighthood for that, Dave McKay sold Peter Noble, he deserved a hood at night, with a rope.

How many players never missed a penalty in league football, and could play at the highest level at right full back, and be an incredible header of the ball as a goal scorer as well as being lethal with his feet.

Anyone else think that it will be 'assistant manager' to the public but really a more director of football sort of role. Can't see an experienced manager wanting to work under iffy, although I guess there are good coaches out there who aren't that good managers.

Despite all that I keep hearing the words Ian Atkins in my head.

I didn't hear what they said on the radio but apparently the wording was someone to assist Iffy rather than an assistant (red macca knows).

That makes all the differernce though, makes it sound more like it would be a director of football type role rather than a number two.

WDP has MD clarifying that it's not confirmed or been discussed as yet and as BWB said likely to be a part time helper monkey rather than a number two.

Step forward Raymond Wilkins...

http://www.supanet.com/media/00/07/46/wilkins.jpg

Good move if it's true.  Wilkins is a pretty decent number two sort of character.  Plenty of experience and very much into player fitness.  In his time at QPR I rememeber a couple of player interviews about how he had them working like Dogs pre-season.

QPR links are all there as well so fits the bill.  Real shame it's not permanent but there you go.

Wilkins worked well with an inexperienced manager in the form of Dennis Wise at Milwall. that could be a good move
