Title: Hurricane Names Post by: pumbaa on Friday, April 21, 2006, 20:33:57 Well, it appears our African American friends have found something else to be pissed about. A black congresswoman (this would be Sheila Jackson Lee, of Houston) reportedly complained that the names of hurricanes are all Caucasian-sounding names. She would prefer some names that reflect African-American culture such as Chamiqua, Woeisha, and Jamal. I can hear it now: A weatherman in Houston saying ...
"Wordup, Muthas! Herr-i-cane Chamiqua be headin' fo' Galveston like Leroy on a crotch rocket! Bitch be a category fo'! So, turn off dem chitlins, grab yo' chirren, leave yo crib, and head fo' de nearest FEMA office fo yo FREE shit!" Title: Hurricane Names Post by: Simon Pieman on Friday, April 21, 2006, 20:41:54 I thought some organisation agrees on the naming of hurricanes. I think it's the meteorological (sp?) organisation or something like that?
Title: Hurricane Names Post by: flammableBen on Friday, April 21, 2006, 20:45:50 I think they swap between male and female names every year and they get chosen from a pre-aproved list, with names getting retired if one's particuarly destructive; there won't be another katrina again.
Title: Hurricane Names Post by: pumbaa on Friday, April 21, 2006, 20:53:27 It is, apparantly a true story.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=33896 I did of course make the last bit up. Hurricane names are determined by the National Weather Service. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml I added this link as it explains it in terms I can understand  http://www.fema.gov/kids/hunames.htm Title: Hurricane Names Post by: STFCBird on Friday, April 21, 2006, 20:59:02 They alternate between male and female names and use a name for each letter of the alphabet
